Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1—Tafuri's beautiful watercolor and pencil illustration depict a a woodland landscape surrounding a human family's cabin. Each spread teems with life while focusing on a central father animal and its young. Animals noises (Rurrr-rurr-rurrr!) are matched with a repeated couplet: '"I love furry hugs,' says Little Bear. 'Just-Daddy-and-me hugs."' The adjective describing each hug changes to highlight the animal duo. Painted turtles, beavers, skunks, foxes, chipmunks, bobwhites, hares, owls, raccoons, and woodpeckers are among the creatures introduced. Each page has much to examine, including a visual clue as to the upcoming animal family. The final page identifies the central animals, including Latin names, and the small creatures hidden among the scenes. This will be a good choice for reading aloud to a group or even examining close up one-on-one. VERDICT Daddies and little ones alike will enjoy a nice snuggle while reading this book together before bed.—Laura Hunter, Mount Laurel Library, NJ

One of our favorite books!

Lots of hidden things to find in the drawings. My 2yr old daughter loves finding the things I name in the drawings. This book is much longer than the author's similar "have you seen my duckling?", so it holds her attention longer. And it's nice to see a Daddy-oriented book, as there don't seem to be as many of those as Mommy books.

As always, a touching and enchanting book from Nancy Tafuri. Great to see Dad's getting some of the limelight dominated by mom's in most children's books. Parents, children and nature lovers of all ages will love kissing themselves in this gem. I gave it away as a Valentines Day present to a toddler and also whole classroom of preschoolers in my favorite child care center. Rave reviews all around!

Sweet book.
Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2015
SUMMARY: This is a repetitive book showing different animals and how they best love to snuggle with Daddy for hugs.

ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations appear to have been done in colored pencil. They have a soft look. The pictures are big for the little ones and full of soft colors. There are other little creatures in the background for an additional seek and find activity.

REVIEW: This was a very sweet book that celebrates fathers and the love they can give through hugs. Books too much shy away from Daddy hugs and I am glad for this perfect book. It is very repetitive with the phrase "Just-Daddy-and-me-hugs," but the littlest ones will love repeating it along with the reader along the way. There are some texture words that may be unfamiliar to the listener such as silky, downy, bristly. But these would be a great learning experience by finding things that feel like they do. This book also has a wide variety of animals for children to learn and a glossary in the back of the "hidden" animals on the pages. A lovely book that I highly recommend.

AGE RECOMMENDATION: Advertised for ages 3-6. I think the board book would be perfect for ages 0-4 and this hardback book would be better suited for the ages 3-6.
