On a windswept British coastline, the tide deposits an unexpected gift...

It was the cry that she first noticed, the plaintive wail that called to her over the crash of winter waves. Wrapped only in a sealskin, the baby girl looks up at Effie and instantly captures her heart. She meant only to temporarily foster the young orphan, but when news reaches Effie that her husband has been lost at sea, and months pass without anyone claiming the infant, she embraces her new family—her son, Jack, and her adopted daughter, Morna.

Effie has always been an outcast in her village, the only granddaughter of a woman people whisper is a witch, so she's used to a solitary existence. But when Midsummer arrives, so, too, does a man claiming to be Morna's father. There's no denying Lachlan is the girl's kin, and so, Effie is surprised when he asks her to continue looking after his daughter, mysteriously refusing to explain why. She agrees, but when he returns six months hence, she pushes him for answers. And Lachlan tells a story she never anticipated... one of selkies, legend, and the power of the sea...

Elisabeth’s writing career began in 2013 when she entered Harlequin's So You Think You Can Write contest and it turned out she could. She writes romantic Historical fiction as Elisabeth Hobbes and Historical folklore/fantasy inspired romance as Elisabeth J. Hobbes.

She teaches Primary school but would rather write full time because unlike five year olds her characters generally do what she tells them. She spends most of her spare time reading and is a pro at cooking one-handed while holding a book.

She lives in Cheshire because the car broke down there in 1999 and she never left. Elisabeth has two almost grown kids, two cats, two dogs and a husband. The whole family are on the autistic spectrum and that probably includes the pets! She dreams of having a tidy house one day.

A wondrous tale of finding one’s heart and place.
5 Stars
A wondrous tale of finding one’s heart and place.
Will she decide with her heart’s contents or her head …This is the third different style of stories I have have read by the author, after historical romances, and a WWII narration, now, a combination of historical, woman and fantasy fictions all wrapped in one tale.I just loved it.From the first page I was sucked into the story.Who is this baby girl, what of the skin she came with as a blanket and what destiny awaits Effie for rescuing her. Many Thanks to the author for offering us for this end of year such a beautifully woven tale, filled with magic and love beyond differences.Effie is no demure followed the rules young woman, if she had been, she would not have had to marry, else her son would have been illegitimate. And while she did not love her husband, she liked and respected him.Yet her life is once more turned upside down when in the span of one day she found a baby girl floating on water and learned of her spouse lost to the sea. From this moment, her life will never be the same, after a period of adaptation with two children to take care of, her time becomes rhythmed by the arrival of the child’s father and his half-yearly visits. This so rushed tale nor quick read story, the narrative as the love story take them time to develop, it follows the emotions and heart’s love of Effie. She is a woman torn between many worlds, she longs to be accepted, to not be anymore an outcast, yet she wants to continue the way her life is unraveling, she wants someone to rest her head on, but is torn between her heart’s desires and her head. She is no paragon, a much flawed being, one who makes mistakes, who chooses wrong, who runs away, all for the love of those under her care but by the end she finally gives her heart free reign.I smiled with her, I cheered her but I was also upset and angry with some of her decisions, yet it is from her errors she learned. And she is taught no happiness is easy, so she must grasp all the ins and outs before being able to follow the right path. And while this is Effie’s story, it is a demonstration that love is acceptance of one’s difference, a child not from your blood, a disabled kid, a man from an other realm…5 stars for this tale of love in all its forms, of resilience, forgiveness and courage to pursue one’s happy ending.𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 non-descriptive lovemaking scenes.

WOW! This beautifully written novel grabbed my emotions and stole my breath from the very first page to the last, when I could finally breathe again! Taking place in a wild, immersive setting on the North Yorkshire coast in the late 19th century, Daughter of the Sea is a mesmerizing love story wrapped in an enchanting cloak of fantasy. There's plenty of excitement, mystery, suspense, conflict and danger--a magical combination I always search for but seldom find. I'm so happy I discovered this perfect gem!

Here's a bit of the plot. (WARNING: Some spoilers ahead, but I won't reveal the ending.) When our heroine (Effie Cropton) finds a fur-wrapped infant bobbing along the coast in a wicker basket on a cold Midwinter's Day, she takes the baby to her cottage, where she lives with her husband and their five-month-old son, Jack. The foundling girl is Jack's age, so Effie nurses the babies together. The next night, Effie's friend (Walter Danby) brings news that her sailor husband has died in a mysterious shipwreck, caused by something that "rose up from beneath and struck the ship." Widowed and almost penniless, Effie takes in sewing and paints pictures to earn money as she cares for both babies, forming a strong bond with them.

Exactly one year after she found the baby in a basket, Walter brings news that seals have been spotted nearby. Soon after Walter leaves, a handsome stranger knocks on Effie's door, wearing a coat wrapped in a dark-brown fur--a sealskin. Speaking in a Scottish-like accent, he calls himself Lachlan and claims to be the foundling girl's father. Effie can't deny it.; the kinship is apparent in their similar features. But Effie wants to keep the child she loves, and Lachlan agrees to leave her for a while, especially when he learns that Effie still has the fur that was wrapped around the baby in the basket. He carefully examines the fur--a sealskin--before he leaves, telling Effie to keep his daughter safe. He names the baby "Morna," gives Effie a pearl in payment, and promises to return in six months, on Midsummer's Eve. He returns as promised, giving Effie another pearl and promising to return in another six months, on Midwinter's Night.

These twice-yearly visits continue for several years, and as the children grow, so do Effie's lustful thoughts about the mysterious Lachlan. But Lachlan never stays long, passing "in and out of their lives like sea foam over the sand." Meanwhile, little Morna develops an unsettling craving for the sea, showing no fear of water. The two men in Effie's life--Walter and Lachlan--have cravings of their own. No longer content to be Effie's friend, Walter wants to make her his wife. As a wealthy heir to the local alum works, Walter can offer her a life of luxury and respectability. Unfortunately, the guy is a stuffed shirt who obeys society's rules--just the opposite of Lachlan, who grows jealous of Walter.

Torn between her friendship for Walter and her yearning for Lachlan, Effie yields to her body's needs and kisses Lachlan on a Midsummer's Eve. She asks him to tell her the truth about what he is and where he lives, because Lachlan is no ordinary man. Reluctantly, he comes to Effie's cottage the next morning and tells her that Morna craves the sea because "We are of the sea, she and I. It calls to her as it calls to me." Running a hand over his sealskin, he explains, "This skin is mine, Effie. It is part of me. When I don it, I become the seal. When I remove it, I become the man you see before you. The name of our kind is Selkie." He's from Skailwick, an island in the north of Scotland. Effie refuses to believe him at first, but when he's badly injured by abandoned nets and hooks while swimming in his seal form, she can't deny the evidence of her own eyes. She's falling in love with a mythical creature--a selkie--and her foster daughter is one of them as well.

Lachlan eventually grows weary of his brief, twice-yearly visits and moves into an abandoned cottage at Boggle Cove. Effie joins him one evening to go swimming and sailing in his small boat, where they finally make love. But their happiness doesn't last long. When Lachlan reveals the shocking truth about the brutal death of Morna's selkie mother and Lachlan's subsequent participation in the shipwreck that killed Effie's husband, she rejects Lachlan and reluctantly accepts Walter's offer of marriage.

Will Effie marry Walter and consign herself to a life of suffocating respectability, or will she forgive Lachlan and join her wild nature with his? I'm not saying, but those suspenseful final chapters just about did me in. I've never wanted a Happily Ever After ending so badly in my life! (If you decide to read this book, don't forget to breathe toward the end.)

Kudos for flawless proofreading and almost nonexistent profanity (I found just one swear word in the entire book). The sex scenes are beautiful without being overly explicit, leaving much to the reader's imagination. With memorable characters, immersive scenery, and a gripping plot, this enchanting story easily earns five stars and MY HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!

This is a sweet (with mild sex scenes). heart-wrenching and interesting story of a relationship between a Selkie and a woman. The story is about impossible decisions, love, motherhood, and life in a small, close-minded village in the 1880s. Effie is a widow unsure about her future. She evolves into a strong, independent woman as time goes by and starts to bristle at the hypocrisy and judgmental attitudes of the higher class folks in her village. She doesn't know where she fits in. Lachlan is a great, sensitive and caring character but he is not human and he doesn't think that Effie could live in his world. Overall it is a nice intelligent love story that is worth reading but it is a little slow at times

Wow! This book is incredible! It is intriguing, gripping, enchanting, magical, romantic, heartfelt, heart-wrenching, and so much more! Whenever I picked up "Daughter of the Sea", I was whisked back in time, and went on such an emotional journey with this story.

This is the first book I have read by Elisabeth J. Hobbes, and it certainly will not be my last. Her writing style is visceral, vivid, descriptive, and truly grabs the reader from the very first page. Her storytelling is simply spectacular, and she seamlessly weaves together a story that is impossible to put down. Each moment throughout this book jumped right off of the page, and I often forgot that I was sitting on my couch. I felt like I was right there with the characters watching every scene. I could hear the waves crashing on the shore, the storms approaching, and so much more.

Effie, a young woman, is truly so strong, brave, selfless, caring, and intelligent. When she hears a baby's cry coming from the ocean. She soon finds a baby girl and brings her home, thinking she will take care of her along with her own son, Jack, until someone comes looking for the child. Effie soon finds out that the ship her husband was on has met with tragedy, and there are no survivors. Effie, who is sadly considered an outcast by many in her village, is now a widow. She has a friend in a man named Walter, though, Walter wants more from the relationship, where as Effie does not. Soon, Effie decides she will keep the little girl, though struggles to name her. Her grandmother, Alice, helps her watch the children, and it is clear from the start that the two kids love one another, and that Effie and Alice deeply love them both. Soon, Lachlan, the little girl's father, appears, and promises to visit every six months and give Effie payment of some sort for caring for his daughter. He tells her the girl's name is Morna, and that he will not take her away from Effie, as they have a strong bond. As the little girl grows and Effie realizes she (Morna) is drawn to the sea, Effie begins to have more and more questions. Lachlan soon tells her that both he and Morna are selkies, who can transform between seal and human form. Effie finds herself drawn to Lachlan, and is falling in love with him the more time they spend together. With her heart pulling her toward a future with Lachlan, and those around her telling her she should marry Walter for stability, Effie finds herself torn at first. When true colors show, will Effie follow what she thinks others believe is the right thing to do even though she knows it is wrong, or will she follow her own heart? You will just have to read to find out.

(Possible Spoilers!)
I found myself pulling for Effie and Lachlan throughout so much of the book. Not every moment in their relationship is smooth, and there is heartbreak and extremely difficult moments as truths come to the forefront. However, they truly make one another happy, and their love for both children is beautiful to read. You can feel Effie and Lachlan's chemistry, and many moments had me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen. The ending is absolutely beautiful!

If you enjoy historical fiction, I highly recommend this book! I found myself turning the pages into the early hours of the morning, and so look forward to reading what Ms. Hobbes writes next.

Thank you so much to HarperCollins UK-One More Chapter and NetGalley for the ARC of this book, it is incredible! All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Love Reading
5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely story

I'm giving five stars for this story, as I enjoyed it very much. Since it was a fantasy, I was able to go along with the flow of the characters and plot and indulge my imagination. I liked Effie and I was rooting for her through the entire book. My heart went out to Jack, her son, and it was obvious to the modern mind that he had Autism. Effie's love for him was touching. The novel was well written and the ending brought tears to my eyes. Daughter of the Sea would appeal to any reader who loves a romantic fantasy.

Can you fall deeply in love with a stranger, only to have that stranger turn out to be not just a stranger, but not human. Does the fact that he loves you in return help or hinder your search for happiness?

The north-east coast of Britain can be a savage place to work on the sea, especially in the 19th Century. Effie, a sailor’s wife with a young son, finds a floating basket with a baby girl inside. She rescues the baby, only to receive news of the death of her husband and all his shipmates.

The following mid-winter, she receives a visit from a stranger, the rescued baby’s father. Lachlan tells her that he, and by extension Morna, his daughter, is a Selkie, half-man and half-seal.

Effie as a penniless widow, must needs find employment. Fortunately, she has a talent for painting flowers and the like and is able to sell some of these and make a small income.

Lachlan returns for a brief call each midwinter and midsummer. As time passes, Effie falls in love him, and so the problems mount as she realises that her neighbours will turn against her.
Effie, as a young talented widow, also has a suitor in Walter Danby, the local landowner’s son.

Ms Hobbes has a real talent for telling a story. This is the first I have read of hers that’s not set in the Northeast Cheshire area, where I myself was born and brought up. This hasn’t affected her tale-telling abilities though.

How can Effie cross the divide between human and Selkie? How will she react to Walter’s well-meaning attentions? He is at least human!

An excellent read!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating and beautifully written

Having read a few of Elisabeth Hobbes’ novels, I knew I was in for a treat but this was different with a twist. Touching and sensitively written with a tender (un-gushy) romance & beautifully descriptive narrative that made it all feel believable. I couldn’t put it down and often had a rush to work due to sneaking a couple of chapters in with a cuppa in bed when I probably should’ve been in the shower. Thoroughly recommend.

What a wonderful book, that I just had to continue reading. What a treasure Effie was taking in morna, and ensuring Jack didn't go into an institution. This is my first Elizabeth J Hobbs book, it won't be my last.
