Cullen grew up in rural North Carolina, but now lives in the St. Louis area with his wife Cindy and his son Jackson. His noir/horror comic (and first collaboration with Brian Hurtt), The Damned, was published in 2007 by Oni Press. The follow-up, The Damned: Prodigal Sons, was released in 2008. In addition to The Sixth Gun, his current projects include Crooked Hills, a middle reader horror prose series from Evileye Books; The Tooth, an original graphic novel from Oni Press; and various work for Marvel and DC. Somewhere along the way, Cullen founded Undaunted Press and edited the critically acclaimed small press horror magazine, Whispers from the Shattered Forum.

All writers must pay their dues, and Cullen has worked various odd jobs, including Alien Autopsy Specialist, Rodeo Clown, Professional Wrestler Manager, and Sasquatch Wrangler.

And, yes, he has fought for his life against mountain lions and he did perform on stage as the World's Youngest Hypnotist. Buy him a drink sometime, and he'll tell you all about it.

I heard about this series back in my first year of uni in 2016 and let me tell you I haven’t burned through pages of another book since the Hunger Games series, this series is enthralling! Its pages are filled to the brim with haunts and suspension that makes you want more as we read as the main character, Emmy, unravels the mysteries of not only Harrow County but about her own self. Not only was I enraptured by the story but I am in love with the quality of the artistry lovingly put into each panel on every page, it’s amazing what an artist can capture using water color that couldn’t be properly conveyed in any other medium.

If you were hesitant about reading this series take this as a sign for you to start this series already, or, if you’re like me, add this one into your personal library of books. Waste no more time, a fantastic read awaits you!

The omnibus is definitely the way to go with this. I thoroughly enjoyed the story. As Mike Mignola reviewed, it is both charming and disturbing. The problem is that (if this is actually a problem) that the story and art flow so well that you're over and done with it before you know! I originally bought the first TPB and after going through it (and immediately rereading it because it was so much fun) I knew that I should wait for the omnibus before buying the other individual editions. Worth the wait. In my opinion, Cullen Bunn stories tend to range from "good" to "excellent" and this one falls somewhere above "Very Good" with the original Sixth Gun series being an example of "Very good to Excellent," or at least very close if we're reserving excellent for the real giant stories that are the Casablancas, Wizard of Ozs, Citizen Kanes, and The Graduates of the TPB world.

I loved everything about this omnibus. The illustrations and storyline were fantastic! I will get the next issues right now!!

Though the author calls her a witch, Hester or Emmy is more of an earth spirit who commands the land and all that inhabit it. These localized deities are popular in eastern mythologies.

I like the story. It has a supernatural theme. The illustration is a little on the darker side. It is not what I would consider to be in the genre of horror, but it is horror adjacent, maybe? I found myself interested in seeing what comes next. It was a fun read, and I am excited to get the next omnibus when it comes out.
I will say that I am not entirely sure that I like the main character. I do not agree with all of her choices, and I am unsure of whether or not I really want to see her succeed. It's not a bad thing to be skeptical of the main character, but it drives the story in a different way. Perhaps other people will feel like they are 100% on board with her.

Slammed into a world that is terrifying and yet so beautiful. The artwork is amazing and it softens the dark nature of the story. Then the artwork enhances the terror as soon as you relax from it's softening affects. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Una historia digna de ser leída
Reviewed in Mexico on July 27, 2023

How I never read this graphic novel before now I'm not sure, but I am glad I finally bought it.

Creepy, atmospheric and superbly written and drawn, HARROW COUNTY should be on every horror fan's must buy list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sehr schöne Story
Reviewed in Germany on March 8, 2024

3.0 out of 5 stars Qualità della carta pessima
Reviewed in Italy on September 19, 2023

5.0 out of 5 stars Nurture Vs Nature taken to a new level.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 17, 2023
Obviously it's fantastic, from the beautiful watercolour artwork through to the incredible world-building. What is particularly interesting to me is that it tackles the nature Vs nurture debate in a whole new way. Emmy is the reincarnation of the evil witch Hester but is she destined to become evil like Hester or will she follow a different road? The interesting thing is that the environment that makes Emmy the good person she is was created by Hester. Fascinating.
