Life for Bertie seems to be moving at a pace that is rather out of his control. In Drummond Place gardens it seems that Olive has their future together all planned out. Meanwhile, upstairs at 44 Scotland Street, Bertie’s father Stuart is powerless to stop over-bearing Irene and her motion for Bertie to travel to Aberdeen on a three-month secondment. And, further up in the New Town, while Bruce Anderson plots with old-school chums, love blossoms in Big Lou’s Cafe.

Warm hearted, humorous and wonderfully wise, Love in the Time of Bertie offers philosophical insight as well as sartorial elegance. Catch up once again with the extended family at No 44, in this the latest instalment in the Scotland Street series.

Alexander McCall Smith is one of the world’s most prolific and most popular authors. His career has been a varied one: for many years he was a professor of Medical Law and worked in universities in the United Kingdom and abroad. Then, after the publication of his highly successful 'No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency' series, which has sold over twenty million copies, he devoted his time to the writing of fiction and has seen his various series of books translated into over forty-six languages and become bestsellers through the world. These include the Scotland Street novels, first published as a serial novel in The Scotsman, the Isabel Dalhousie novels, the Von Igelfeld series, and the Corduroy Mansions series, novels which started life as a delightful (but challenging to write) cross-media serial, written on the website of the Telegraph Media Group. This series won two major cross-media awards - Association of Online Publishers Digital Publishing Award 2009 for a Cross Media Project and the New Media Age award.

In addition to these series, Alexander writes stand-alone books. 2014 sees publication of three new novels which fall into this area: 'The Forever Girl'; 'Fatty O’Leary’s Dinner Party'; and 'Emma' – a reworking of the classic Jane Austen novel. This year there will also be a stunning book on Edinburgh, 'A Work of Beauty: Alexander McCall Smith’s Edinburgh'. Earlier stand alone novels include 'La’s Orchestra Saves the World' and 'Trains and Lovers: A Hearts Journey'.

Alexander is also the author of collections of short stories, academic works, and over thirty books for children. He has received numerous awards for his writing, including the British Book Awards Author of the Year Award in 2004 and a CBE for service to literature in 2007. He holds honorary doctorates from nine universities in Europe and North America. In March of 2011 he received an award from the President of Botswana for his services through literature to that country.

Alexander McCall Smith lives in Edinburgh. He is married to a doctor and has two daughters.

Whimsy and retribution, what more can a reader ask for in one book? Whimsy and philosophical meandering are provided by most of the usual cast of this series, with gems of common sense tossed in when the story begins to wander too far from the main plot. Retribution (and reward) when the despicable (Irene, the mother from hell) become insufferable and the saintly (Big Lou) finally get to the head of the payoff line.

One surprise, is the behavior of the intensely egotistical Bruce who finds himself in a moral dilemma and actually recognizes it to be one.

Entertaining as always and leaving the reader counting the days before the next book in the series appears.

Whether it be a young boy, forced by circumstances at an early age to realize that he must assert himself to achieve happiness, a dandy who must come to grips with the folly of his ways, a young overwhelmed mother of triplets who struggles to find happiness in the good around her she has failed to acknowledge or a number of dear and kind souls whose gentle natures have allowed them to be pushed aside & dominated by others but in the end manage to grab onto happiness before it slips past; the author understands them all. He let’s each tell a story that leaves us with hope & good cheer as they survive their challenges and build solid foundations for their futures.

I don’t know how he manages to create these stories so effortlessly. It’s like he’s writing about living people that he knows very well. I love them all and I hope he continues telling their stories for a long, long time.

Loved this series. I don’t want it to stop. Alexander McCall Smith has such poignant insights into human nature. It helps get me out of so much of the plasticity of modern life. I enjoyed the warm/fuzzy feeling of going to 44 Scotland Street every night as I settled down to read this book.

So many changes in the air...like Big Lou finding love, Stuart standing up for his family against Irene, and Bruce getting a new personality (possibly:). Love these characters!

I have read more than 50 books by A M S. I think 44 Scotland Street is now my favourite series, though like many I started on First Ladies. I find it amazing he can produce so much quality writing. Yes, there is repetition but the familiarity is a joy. Though the series is very easy reading it is full of original observations and I usually learn about a dozen new words per book. Even the minor characters as fascinating - Olive and Pansy are brilliant creations.
