The Eastern Professional Basketball League (1946-78) was fast and physical, often played in tiny, smoke-filled gyms across the northeast and featuring the best players who just couldn’t make the NBA—many because of unofficial quotas on Black players, some because of scandals, and others because they weren’t quite good enough in the years when the NBA had less than 100 players.

In Boxed out of the NBA: Remembering the Eastern Professional Basketball League, Syl Sobel and Jay Rosenstein tell the fascinating story of a league that was a pro basketball institution for over 30 years, showcasing top players from around the country. During the early years of professional basketball, the Eastern League was the next-best professional league in the world after the NBA. It was home to big-name players such as Sherman White, Jack Molinas, and Bill Spivey, who were implicated in college gambling scandals in the 1950s and were barred from the NBA, and top Black players such as Hal “King” Lear, Julius McCoy, and Wally Choice, who could not make the NBA into the early 1960s due to unwritten team quotas on African-American players.

Featuring interviews with some 40 former Eastern League coaches, referees, fans, and players—including Syracuse University coach Jim Boeheim, former Temple University coach John Chaney, former Detroit Pistons player and coach Ray Scott, former NBA coach and ESPN analyst Hubie Brown, and former NBA player and coach Bob Weiss—this book provides an intimate, first-hand account of small-town professional basketball at its best.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Clouds of blue cigarette smoke drifted lazily upward from packed houses, further diminishing already-inadequate lighting. On the rock-hard, ankle-killing floor were the Scranton Miners, doing battle — often quite literally — with the Wilkes-Barre Barons, Allentown Jets or some other team from another working-class town in the Eastern League. Nobody played defense, and it was not unusual for the final score to be in the 130-125 range. Two native Scrantonians who grew up as Miners fans, Syl Sobel and Jay Rosentein, comprehensively captured the athletes, culture and personality of the era in Boxed Out of the NBA.

This is no mere reminiscence. It’s a deeply researched, well-documented history of the league that also is timely, in that they were able to interview dozens of the characters, players and impresarios, like recently deceased Miners owner Art Pachter, who made the league not just a minor league alternative to the fledgling NBA but an extraordinary enterprise unto itself.

Syl and Jay brought me back to my brief playing days in the Eastern League! The small towns, the tiny gyms, the rabid fans, the colorful owners, and most of all the seriously good players who played with an edge because they fell one step short of the NBA. All the characters, the stories, and the brutally tough competition – it’s all here. About time the Eastern League got some love!

-- Charley Rosen, author, basketball commentator, and former Eastern League player and CBA coach

The authors recognize men who gave their all to a game that gave little back. Men of character and intellect whose stories may never have been told, some of whom failed themselves but lifted themselves up to honor and play a game they loved. Meticulously researched, this book will impact their families forever.

-- Ray Scott, former NBA and ABA player and coach and former Eastern Leaguer

This book brought back some great memories of my six years playing in the Eastern League. The Eastern League really meant the world to me. It provided me with the opportunity to continue playing basketball after I had graduated from Syracuse. The competition in the Eastern League was fierce and the play was high quality. Believe it or not, I even have some fond memories of the drives through heavy snowfall from Syracuse to Scranton to play!

-- Jim Boeheim, Coach at Syracuse University, former Eastern Leaguer, and Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2005

Boxed Out of the NBA is an outstanding story on an unheralded era of professional basketball. Kudos to Syl Sobel and Jay Rosenstein for shining a light on the Eastern League and its many talented players.

-- John Chaney, Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2001, former coach at Temple University, and former Eastern Leaguer

You can tell when you've found a book which is a labor of love. Boxed Out of the NBA is clearly one of them. A history of the Eastern League has been long-overdue, and Syl Sobel and Jay Rosenstein, who saw their first EBL game in Scranton nearly 60 years ago, bring a unique perspective as both fans and authors. The EBL is rife with stories of players who toiled in obscurity like Sherman White, Bill Spivey, Jack Molinas, who were young stars banished from the NBA after gambling scandals; future pro and college coaching legends like Jim Boeheim, John Chaney, Hubie Brown and Jack Ramsay; and countless EBL lifers such as Julius McCoy, Swish McKinney and coach Stan Novak. The EBL was the home of the best players outside the NBA at its peak (1954-67) and the telling of their story is long overdue, making this a must-have for any fans interested in professional basketball history.

-- Robert Bradley, President Emeritus, Association for Professional Basketball Research and author of The Basketball Draft Fact Book: A History of Professional Basketball's College Drafts

Boxed Out Of The NBA is a treasure of wonderful stories about the legendary Eastern League. Syl Sobel and Jay Rosenstein have done a masterful job collecting the most unique stories from some of the game’s most legendary figures. A must read for any basketball junkie!

-- Tommy Sheppard, general manager, Washington Wizards

If you are a basketball fan and are looking for a good read I heartily recommend Boxed out of the NBA: Remembering the Eastern Professional Basketball League!

I am an attorney, a former newspaper reporter, and retired director of publications for a federal government agency. I started writing books about US government when my daughter asked me to write a book for her on how the government works. After it came out, my younger daughter asked me to write a book for her, too. So I asked her what to write about, and she said "cool things about presidents." After that book came out, my editor asked me if I had any more book ideas. When I told her that my older daughter suggested the first book, and my younger daughter suggested the second book, but now I was out of ideas, my editor said: "Mr. Sobel, you should have had more kids."

That was more than 20 years ago. Both girls have started their careers. I've had 5 books published, and self-published one. I also cover high school sports for our local community newspaper.

Next year I've got a new book coming out, Boxed Out of the NBA: Remembering the Eastern Professional Basketball League, which I coauthored with my childhood friend from Scranton, Pa., Jay Rosenstein. The book recounts the history of the Eastern League, the second-best pro league behind the NBA during the 1950s and early 60s when the NBA had only 8-10 teams and an unwritten quota on African-American players. This book tells the story of some of the best professional basketball players you never heard of. Will keep you posted on its progress.

Brought back some great memories watching some great basketball. Back in the day we use to walk from Dunmore PA to the Scranton CYC. If you were a fan of the EPBL, you’ll truly enjoy this book.

I enjoyed this book immensely, and it provided a wonderful story of the players who were at the top of their basketball professions, yet for various reasons were unable or unwilling to play in the NBA due to racial quotas, finances, or other unique issues. I couldn’t put the book down and found the tales of the players, owners, referees, and cities to be fascinating. A wonderful book!

A wonderful book that captures the nostalgia and essence of a league (EBL) that I grew up with in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. The book highlights great basketball players who were kept out of the NBA because of the color of their skin or their involvement (direct or implied) with the college basketball scandals of the 1950's. Players such as Sherman White, Bill Spivey or Jack Molinas were acknowledged by basketball mavens to become stars in the NBA that was still in its infancy and unfortunately had a color quota during those years. Sherman White was considered in a league with Elgin Baylor and later Connie Hawkins (who was also barred from the NBA during his prime). Bill Spivey would have been the first great big man in the NBA before Wilt and Russell came along. Molinas became notorious for other reasons as he was the key figure in the college point shaving scandals in the 1950's. Other great players from that league who could have made the starting lineups of NBA teams were Stacey Arceneaux, Wally Choice, Julius McCoy and Hal Lear. NBA players who played in the Eastern League at the end of their careers were Paul Arizin and Larry Costello. Bob Love is another NBA all star started in the EBL before moving on to the NBA. Bill Green another Eastern League star was a first round draft pick of the Boston Celtics but never played in the NBA because he refused to fly in an airplane. The book discusses how NBA salaries for most players in the league were miniscule and some players made more money playing in the Eastern League and their full time jobs during the week. Hall of fame coaches who played in the league include John Chaney and Jim Boeheim.

Grew up in Scranton - going to Eastern Basketball League games. Saw 5' 7" Charlie Criss score 72"points in a game. The book brought back memories of classic Scranton/Allentown games. Filled me in on the earlier history of the league - and players who today would be starters in the expanded NBA. A really great read. Great gift for boomers from Washington DC through the New York / Jersey area - to say nothing of those fans of the Eastern League's own Anchorage Northern Knights!

This book brought back so many memoriies of my childhood as my dad, an avid fan of the EBL, used to take me to the Wilmington Blue Bombers games every weekend when they were ihn town. In fact, my dad, a principal at Mary C.I. Williams Elementary School, hired Waite Bellamy as his Physical Educatioin teadcher. Uncle Waite became my in-person, real life hero, whom I remain friends with to this day and was in attendance at the recent honoring of the Blue Bombers 65/66 and 66/67 championship teams and saw Uncle Waite finally received his long-awaited MVP trophy he won in 1970. The EBL had tremendous talent as described by Syl Sobel and Jay Rosenstein and provided many players, particularly African American players the opportunity to show their stuff during a time whem most blacks were not welcomed in the NBA. In addition to Uncle Waite, I loved seeing Swish McKinney, Maurice McHartley, John Savage, Freddie Crawford, Bob Weiss and the McCoy brothers play. to name a few. Kudos to Syl and Jay for brinnging to our attention the roots and foundation of professional basketball in the U.S.

Syl and Jay have produced a well written history of big time basketball played in small town gyms. The authors took their cherished memories and explored the history of Eastern Pa basketball league and the legendary players, many of whom (Spivey, Somerset, Swish Mckinney, Julius McCoy) belonged playing in the N.B.A. This is a must read for fans of basketball.

Ya can tell a lot of research went into this book, lots of interviews and quotes, plus it's well organized. I was surprised the NBA didn't pay their players better early on. The EPBL accepted players the NBA didn't be it due to unwritten racial quotas or guilt by association -- even when not guilty. It doesn't just explain things -- it makes you feel like you're there. A true slice of Americana. Sometimes you order things online and are somewhat disappointed -- this book didn't disappoint.

This book is destined to be the definitive history of the Eastern Professional Basketball League. The authors have taken the time to carefully reference and footnote the multitude of quotes and personal vignettes of players and coaches and others involved in the league. One can only wonder how the African American basketball players would have done in the NBA if there wasn't blatant discrimination and quotas similar to what occurred in major league baseball.
