Raised in the steamy bayous of New Orleans in the early 1900s, LeRoi "King" Tremain, caught up in his family's ongoing feud with the rival DuMont family, learns to fight. But when the teenage King mistakenly kills two white deputies during a botched raid on the DuMonts, the Tremains' fear of reprisal forces King to flee Louisiana.

King thus embarks on an adventure that first takes him to France, where he fights in World War I as a member of the segregated 369th Battalion—in the bigoted army he finds himself locked in combat with American soldiers as well as with Germans. When he returns to America, he battles the Mob in Jazz Age Harlem, the KKK in Louisiana, and crooked politicians trying to destroy a black township in Oklahoma.

King Tremain is driven by two principal forces: He wants to be treated with respect, and he wants to create a family dynasty much like the one he left behind in Louisiana. This is a stunning debut by novelist Guy Johnson that provides a true depiction of the lives of African-Americans in the early decades of the twentieth century.

I read this book years ago and fell in love with it. King is one hell of a well written character. I wish there was something nice I could say about his wife Serena but there's not. I grew up with the dark skin stigma and was picked on as well for it. So I was emotionally invested in this book from the beginning. I'm glad to have it in my collection. It's worth reading multiple times.

The book paints a complex story of African Americans managing and challenging their status in America.

There is joy, pain and hope expressed in a way so true to Black culture it feels authentic, affirming and affectionate.

I thank Guy Johnson for a great read!

I live this book!!! I've read it 4 times. I've had other copies and loaned them never to have them returned. The story is about a prideful young soldier that becomes one of the most feared and respected African American entrepreneurs in the early 1900's

Best book I ever read! Love the plot and seamless weaving of the storyline. The author has a wonderful understanding of history, which helps this to be a historical novel as well, taking us over a fifty year span. It is not delicate in its racial sensitivities. Also, it sheds light on discrimination within the American black culture. I feel this should be required reading in high schools. It is as intoxicating as A Farewell to Arms, Invisible Man,To Kill a Mocking Bird, Native Son, the Color Purple and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Especially recommended for black males because it is Empowering! It shows a man's man who demonstrates bravery, honor, entrepreneurship, ownership and loyalty. Most of all he's Unapologetically Black. Hail King Tremain :)
FYI: You should know that this is actually a prequel to the author's first novel, "Echoes of a Distant Summer", which is not as well written but gave birth to King Tremain's character.

I very much enjoyed the development of the main characters. The book gives insight to the hardships of black people dealing with Jim crow.

This novel is so well written. It shows the struggle, ingenuity and the grit of African Americans as they have fought to move progressively in America. The story of Bordeaux (King) Tremain is tough but most of his interactions are not only to better his standing but that of his community; especially those who could not fight for themselves. This is one of the best stories I have read.
