A delightful story of a child’s visit to a grandmother and home far away, and of how families connect and love across distance, language and cultures.

Kylie is nervous about visiting her grandmother―her Amah―who lives SO FAR AWAY. In Taipei, Kylie is shy with Amah. Even though they have spent time together in video chats, those aren’t the same as real life. And Kylie is at first uncomfortable with the less-familiar language, customs, culture and food. However, after she plays and splashes in the hot springs (which aren’t that different from pools at home), Kylie begins to see this place through her grandmother’s eyes and sees a new side of things that used to scare her. Soon, Kylie is leading her Amah back through all her favorite places and having SO MUCH FUN! And when it is time to go home, the video chats will be extra special until they can visit faraway again.

Backmatter includes author and illustrator notes and a guide to some of the places and foods explored in Taiwan.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2-Kylie and her mother travel to Taipei from San Francisco to spend time with her Amah, or grandmother, with whom she video chats frequently but can't visit because of the distance. At first, the little girl feels nervous and unsure about the excursion, daunted by the language barrier and overwhelmed by new tastes and sights Amah wants to share with her. However, when they visit the hot springs, Kylie finally finds that embracing this comforting activity bonds her with her Amah and allows her to enjoy the rest of the stay. She delights in all of the things she found strange at first, and is sad to leave her grandmother when it's time to return home. She enthusiastically continues to video chat with her grandmother every Saturday and is no longer scared, but excited for future visits. Subisak's watercolor, pencil, and ink illustrations lovingly show details from Taiwanese life and culture. Ranging from multiple vignettes per page to full spreads, they possess an almost cinematic storyboard quality while supporting the mirrored narrative symmetry that has the hot spring visit as its midpoint. Taiwanese words and conversation are used throughout, clear from context. VERDICT As is true for Hyewon Yum's Grandpa Across the Ocean, this is a poignantly emotional and highly relatable story for children whose grandparents or other family members might live far away, but also one that teaches universal lessons about overcoming fears of the unfamiliar.-Yelena Voysey, formerly at Pickering Educational Lib., Boston Univ.α(c) Copyright 2011. "A heartfelt homage to her Taiwanese heritage that binds multiple generations on either side of the globe. . . . Margaret Chiu Greanias and Tracy Subisak delightfully, inventively present a hesitant child's transformative reunion with her Taiwanese grandmother on the other side of the world." - Shelf Awareness, starred review

Reverso poetry showcases inner change

Reverso poetry showcases inner change
Amah Faraway is about an American girl who is a little apprehensive about visiting her grandmother in Taiwan; she loves her grandmother (of course), but the language, food, and sights simply aren't what she's used to. As they make their way around Taipei, however, she discovers that new experiences can lead to comfort and joy of their own. What truly makes this story a standout is how it uses "Reverso" (reverse poetry) to show how her views change over time. If you don't know about Reverso, it's a poetry structure that uses the exact same phrases in the first half and the second half, only in the second half, the order reverses. So, with different punctuation (and in this case, different illustrations), the meaning changes. Anyhow, it's a difficult thing to do at all, and to do it so well and to use it to highlight this sort of inner change is simply exquisite.Side note: if you like this Reverso structure, you should also check out Kerri Kokias and Teagan White's "Snow Sisters!" which also uses Reverso.

My 2.5 yo son and I were immediately drawn to the Taipei 101 on the cover, and the story was literally our stories: I grew up in Texas and would visit Taiwan every year, my son is born in California and has been visiting Taiwan with me every year too. I love the design of the story and the illustrations, it helps bring back fond memories to both my son and I and makes us yearning for our next trip. That being said. This book isn’t exclusive to Taiwanese folks, I’d recommend this to anyone who has a loved one living faraway, it’s such a universal theme these days!

It’s rare to find any kids books that showcase Taiwanese heritage so it’s fun to see in this book! But the theme of the story is universal about a girl and her grandma who lives far away. The book is written in way that you can read it in reverse which is really cool! I’m such a big fan of the author. Her stories are always so uniquely written and inclusive. Highly recommend this book!!

purchased this book for my child whose "a-ma" lives in taipei. this book illustrates scenes from taipei, ranging from night market to hot springs to the CKS memorial. Of course the endpages have lots of illustrations of taiwanese "little eats" like you tiao, dan bing, and xiao long bao. Great to instill taiwanese heritage in your little one, or to prep for a trip to taiwan!

I recommend this book along with "A Little Book of Taiwanese Eats" by Maryann Chu as a great combo gift.

This is a beautiful story about a little girl and her grandmother who loves far away in Taiwan.
The connection they make through food, adventures and culture is so relatable to anyone who grew up in different countries and cultures. Such a cute story for kids and adults to relate to. The illustrations are also beautiful and vibrant. I highly recommend this book!

AMAH FARAWAY depicts a child who visits her grandma faraway. She learns many new things, tentatively at first, then later changes after one special experience with Amah. After that, she enjoys her time and every experience with Amah and creates special and lasting memories with her grandma. A gentle and heartfelt intergenerational story from a child’s perspective in a unique storytelling structure.
