Top review from the United States

Ewan Morrison takes a simple premise -- lock someone up for twenty years, add abuse and cruelty
in a basement where somehow, love still lives- and explores the depth of human depravity with
before, during and the indeterminate after, all beautifully intercut. Morrison is clinically accurate with Nina but without the clinic and we are left with 'The Project', Nina, in all the naked veniality we are capable of. Birds become a metaphor for the story, from Long March to an odd cast of characters, each a novel of their own, each absolutely ring true. You'll probably want a sequel, but know in your own heart you'll have to write it yourself.

This is a hard book to read at times because it is so powerful, dark and emotional. The writing grips you from the off and you find yourself in Nina’s mind, her world, her pain. Rarely have I read a book that has affected me so deeply. Amazing writing.

A very well written story of a girl coming out of a cult. Very well researched, with he right level of emotions and not too soppy.makes you wonder how people can brainwash others and how cult members don't see the harm it causes. A good read

5.0 out of 5 stars Nina X - A Slow Read and Perfect Masterclass.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 10, 2019
For me, Nina X by Ewan Morrison, was a slow read. Not that the writing isn't well paced and undeniably brilliant, but because Morrison's sensorial immersion of the reader in Nina X's world is so complete, I found I needed recovery breaks and indulge in comfort reading to cope with the sometimes harrowing parts of Nina's story, in fact, if there was a tear quotient rating for this book, it would be right up there with To Kill a Mocking Bird. But don't get me wrong, it is funny too, and Nina's struggle in an alien environment is the perfect vehicle to shine a light on the absurdities and collateral damage of our crumbling 'care' system. Much has been said about the bigger themes of this novel but for me it is Nina's tragic vulnerability that will live long in my memory - and that for anyone interested in writing, Nina X provides the perfect masterclass.
