The definitive and fully illustrated guide to the Bayeux Tapestry. The full history of the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings and the story of the tapestry itself.

Most people know that the Bayeux Tapestry depicts the moment when the last Anglo-Saxon king of England, Harold Godwinson, was defeated at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 by his Norman adversary William the Conqueror. However, there is much more to this historic treasure than merely illustrating the outcome of this famous battle. Full of intrigue and violence, the tapestry depicts everything from eleventh-century political and social life―including the political machinations on both sides of the English Channel in the years leading up to the Norman Conquest―to the clash of swords and stamp of hooves on the battle field.

Drawing on the latest historical and scientific research, authors David Musgrove and Michael Lewis have written the definitive book on the Bayeux Tapestry, taking readers through its narrative, detailing the life of the tapestry in the centuries that followed its creation, explaining how it got its name, and even offering a new possibility that neither Harold nor William were the true intended king of England. Featuring stunning, full- color photographs throughout, The Story of the Bayeux Tapestry explores the complete tale behind this medieval treasure that continues to amaze nearly one thousand years after its creation.

Huge disappointment, derivative history and completely lacking in utility.
1 Star
Huge disappointment, derivative history and completely lacking in utility.
I must disagree with the overwhelming positive response this book has received from other reviewers. As a history book it is derivative at best offering no new insights or research (including the claim of Edgar Ætheling son of Edmund Ironside as the true king over Harold Godwinson). Sill, the information is presented in an easy and approachable narrative style though it lacks any new historiography. For those looking for insight on the actual manufacture of the tapestry or specifically the needlepoint and evolution of the Bayeux stitch - even the large scale photos of panel segments will disappoint (not to mention the fact that the authors can’t even describe the method accurately: lay-fill laid work, couch, picot). If you are looking for a new suitable scale presentation of the entire tapestry you will be gravely disappointed as the authors chose to present the full tapestry on only six of its 352 pages using a format four strips only 3cm (A little less than an inch and a quarter) high making it both unimpressive and practically useless. See attached photo. Finally, the lack of panel index, so readers can go directly to a specific panel and get the translation and segment of the narrative story depicted, is criminal… Absolutely criminal. There are far better choices of books - both in the historiography of the Norman Conquest and certainly in the presentation and description of the tapestry itself.

I saw a reviewer call this book "derivative". However, this is a presentation of the Tapestry, with all the contemporary interpretations. So many authors have a pet theory and try to convince the reader why the Tapestry supports their theory. Musgrove gives a detailed description of each scene and the contemporary viewpoints and does not push a pet theory because he knows what most won't acknowledge - that there is no true proof of any particular theory - no matter what one's patriotic sensibilities makes them want to believe. The Tapestry is an enigma and people see what they need to see in it - and that is the essence of art.

This isn't the first book that I have read about the Bayeux Tapestry or the Normans. It is the best book that I have read about these subjects. The illustrations are wonderful. The depth of discussion was just right for a guy who knows something on the subject but isn't writing a paper. Again, I loved it and will share it with friends.

I think the title sums it up best. But I’ll give my take a little more detail. You see I think the book is really good in what it’s job is and that it accomplishes it very well, very much researched and the work shows. However the first like seventy pages are just a long introduction until we get to the needed info about each scene. Overall I’d deduct one star for that long introduction as well as doing what it needed to do. I’d give it five stars if it exceeded my expectations in most cases
