"Razor-sharp... Deb Rogers writes with such verve and honesty about all the ways we stumble through life, and, like all great storytellers, gives us something wondrous when we reach the end of the journey.”—Kevin Wilson, bestselling author of Nothing to See Here

A gleefully dark and entertaining debut for fans of Kevin Wilson and Karen Russell, about one young woman’s sensational summer at a Floridian wildlife center for exotic monkeys

Jamie is a Florida Woman. She grew up on the beach, thrives in humidity, has weathered more hurricanes than she can count, and now, after going viral for an outrageous crime she never meant to commit in the first place, she has the requisite headline to her name. But when the chance comes for her to escape viral infamy and imminent jail time by taking a community service placement at Atlas, a shelter for rescued monkeys, it seems like just the fresh start Jamie needs to finally get her life back on track — until it’s not.

Something sinister stirs in the palmetto woods surrounding her cabin, and secrets lurk among the three beguiling women who run the shelter and affectionately take Jamie under their wing for the summer. She hears the distant screams of monkeys each night; the staff perform cryptic, lakeside sacrifices to honor Atlas; and the land, which has long been abandoned by citrus farmers and theme park developers alike, now proves to be dangerously, relentlessly untamed.

As Jamie ventures deeper into the offbeat world and rituals of Atlas, her summer is soon set to inspire an even stranger Florida headline than she ever could’ve imagined.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The story’s conclusion is efficiently set up and threaded together for an ending that’s well-plotted and satisfying... Rogers finds some tenderhearted balance between the weirdness and wonder of my home state." –The Washington Post

"[An] endearing saga filled with animal advocacy, female friendship, and unexpected comfort...
Florida Woman illustrates a funky, vulnerable kind of reality in one of the country’s most polarizing states." –Shondaland

“An engaging and creepy tale… Rogers skillfully keeps both the reader and Jamie off balance about what’s really going on at Atlas.”
-Tampa Bay Times

"Rogers keeps the story moving with a brisk hand...
Florida Woman ushers in a new talent who knows the quirkiness of the Sunshine State." –Sun Sentinel

"[A] betwitching debut... Rogers relishes Florida’s oddities and extremes, yet she makes Jamie quietly if quirkily sympathetic, lending the rollicking story a vulnerable heart. Readers will fall in love with this one.” –
Publishers Weekly

“Rogers has a talent for setting. Atlas and all the nature surrounding it are beautifully detailed… The day-to-day lives of women… is a subtle but brilliant parody of lesbian culture, particularly the granola, cottage-core type, which is often acknowledged but rarely explored. …I recommend [
Florida Woman] for diverting summer beach reading.” –The Washington Examiner

"Such a page-turner. I couldn't put it down."
—Jenny Lawson, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Let’s Pretend This Never Happened

"
Florida Woman is a razor-sharp portrait of a woman who believes she might be an agent of chaos, who cannot avoid disaster, and the steps she takes, in the strangest of settings, to find a way not only to survive the disaster, but to be transformed by it. Deb Rogers writes with such verve and honesty about all the ways we stumble through life, and, like all great storytellers, gives us something wondrous when we reach the end of the journey.” —Kevin Wilson, bestselling author of Nothing to See Here

"
Florida Woman is a truly wild ride — a book that keeps you guessing with its crazy-compelling story. Vivid details, sly humor, mysterious cultish behavior, and, most importantly, lots of monkeys. It totally sucked me in and surprised me until the very last page." —Annie Hartnett, award-winning author of Rabbit Cake

"Rogers smashes utopianism and utter monkey business together in this wild tale of do-gooders doing bad in Florida. You’ll go bananas for it!"
–Courtney Maum, author of Touch and I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You

"Welcome to the weird world of Atlas, an animal refuge that also happens to be home to some deeply strange human behavior. Droll, refreshing, and full of magnificent monkeys,
Florida Woman is a wild and wildly propulsive novel about public mistakes, dangerous charisma, and the dark side of sanctuary. Rogers writes with verve, charm, and disarming honesty—this debut is as witty as it is heartfelt." –Kimberly King Parsons, author of the National Book Award-nominated Black Light

“My favorite type of read: lushly detailed, eerie, and a whole lot of fun. I gasped, I laughed, I gasped again. You may think you know what’s about to happen, but trust me, you don’t. Deb Rogers has given us a thriller for the ages.”
—Lindsay Hunter, author of Eat Only When You’re Hungry

Deb Rogers loves character-driven stories that take readers to surprising places. She's worked as an award-winning blogger, a statewide policymaker, and a nationally-recognized victim advocate. As a freelance writer and business development consultant she has produced many cool projects including the national expansion of the Listen to Your Mother Show storytelling series and a pop culture vertical for BlogHer. A Florida Woman herself, Deb has traveled from Pensacola to Key West improving the state’s response to violent crime, spent five years in the woods as a wilderness school teacher in Crescent City, and now happily lives and writes in St. Augustine because it offers the perfect blend of dazzling Atlantic Ocean seascapes, well-worn cobblestone streets, and wildly haunted buildings and palm hammocks. While she'd love to stumble upon hidden pirate treasure along the coast someday, her daily obsessions tend to be thriller and heist movies, word puzzles, licorice, Florida manatees, and, of course, monkeys.

Jamie ends up as one of the viral mugshots we love to laugh it, but in Florida Woman we see there is a human behind the headlines and a very desperate one. She gets one lucky break and moves to a monkey refuge to do her community service and she likes it... finally having a mission in life. Except this refuge is run by more Florida women and she has to figure out what they're up to and whether she should help them or get out of Dodge. I loved this. It's fun but also deep about what makes people desperate and what makes us vulnerable to going along to get along. I don't want to reveal twists because they are great. Book club menu is going to be fruit bowl, tacos and margaritas!

This story really confused me. Very strange indeed. Not at all what I was expecting. I am one of those people that have to finish a book or movie even if I don't like it, cause you just never know what's going to happen. Not a bad read, but not a great read.

I could not put this book down! About one-third of the way through I started feeling a knot in my stomach because I knew SOMETHING WAS HAPPENING and hoo boy, something did! The suspense was intense in the best ways, and the end was so fulfilling.
Rogers writes so descriptively that the book played like a movie in my head as I read along, and I was sad to finish it because I enjoyed it so very much!

I could never do this book justice in a review. It’s the weirdest premise; monkeys, rebellion, shady business…but riveting! I haven’t loved a read like this in years! Exciting, provoking, mysterious and victorious. Just do it!

Iffy. The first half of the book was decidedly scary in the direction it looked like it was going. Then, the real plot revealed itself and it changed timbre a bit. Interesting to read about captive monkeys. Not viral enough subject for me to make Jamie a Florida Woman.

A fresh voice out of Florida — whose sharp, witty, lightly weird take fits right in with my favorite authors from that state — and a story that makes me want to find my friends and talk RIGHT NOW about group think, exotic animals, substances, viral internet, how we ignore our instincts around strong enough personalities, what we let others convince us of when we really want to believe, the extremes we forgive in others as long as they share our beliefs, and more. This would be a good book group choice.
