Zaionchkovsy's narrator is blue. His beloved wife Tamara has left him. The story behind her leaving him is odd. Oh so odd. But also very interesting, as Zaionchkovsky spins fascinating tales exclusively. He is meant to be writing a book - after all, he's got the advance, so he's got to write the book - but instead, he finds himself observing the unfolding tales of those around him. And when he hasn't got the whole of any of these individual dramas, then his imagination fills in the gaps. As odd as all this may sound, it works, it really does work. The book holds together beautifully. This is a novel, a wonderful novel, and is it ever satisfying.
And ... yes, it even has a happy ending!
Masterfully translated by Andrew Bromfield.

At times each of the chapters comes across as a shortstory in its own right.
A wonderful read!
