A very good novel, about the life of a writer who observes and tells the life of the muscovitas around him and at the same time tells the odd story about his beloved wife leaving him.
Very well writen and translated.
Also a good introduction by the author of "Snowdrops".
Telling no more, you must read this book ! .

This is nothing short of brilliant.

Zaionchkovsy's narrator is blue. His beloved wife Tamara has left him. The story behind her leaving him is odd. Oh so odd. But also very interesting, as Zaionchkovsky spins fascinating tales exclusively. He is meant to be writing a book - after all, he's got the advance, so he's got to write the book - but instead, he finds himself observing the unfolding tales of those around him. And when he hasn't got the whole of any of these individual dramas, then his imagination fills in the gaps. As odd as all this may sound, it works, it really does work. The book holds together beautifully. This is a novel, a wonderful novel, and is it ever satisfying.

And ... yes, it even has a happy ending!

Masterfully translated by Andrew Bromfield.

A wry, witty, gently ironic novel, rendered into English with pitch-perfect finesse by Andrew Bromfield. A rare gem of a book. Two lines to whet your appetite: 'Patchy with cloud, the yellow-white sky sags down over the city like a slack cinema screen' and, describing mothers out with their prams: 'The faces of infant passengers turned heavenward in their lacy icon-settings.'

5.0 out of 5 stars A novel in witty shortstories
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 8, 2012
This novel is brilliant in its wit and ability to finding joy in everyday situations.
At times each of the chapters comes across as a shortstory in its own right.

A wonderful read!
