Friendship is the most powerful magic of all.
An instant New York Times bestseller from the Pura Belpré Award-winning author of Frizzy! Disney's The Owl House meets Nevermoor in a brilliant and magical adventure from Claribel A. Ortega!
Every year, in the magical town of Ravenskill, Witchlings who participate in the Black Moon Ceremony are placed into covens and come into their powers as full-fledged witches.
And twelve-year-old Seven Salazar can't wait to be placed in the most powerful coven with her best friend! But on the night of the ceremony, in front of the entire town, Seven isn't placed in one of the five covens. She's a Spare!
Spare covens have fewer witches, are less powerful, and are looked down on by everyone. Even worse, when Seven and the other two Spares perform the magic circle to seal their coven and cement themselves as sisters, it doesn't work! They're stuck as Witchlings―and will never be able to perform powerful magic.
Seven invokes her only option: the impossible task. The three Spares will be assigned an impossible task: If they work together and succeed at it, their coven will be sealed and they'll gain their full powers. If they fail... Well, the last coven to make the attempt ended up being turned into toads. Forever.
But maybe friendship can be the most powerful magic of all…
With action-packed adventure, a coven of quirky witchlings, Claribel A. Ortega's signature humor, and girl-power vibes, you won't be able to put down this middle-grade Latine witch story, perfect for fans of Amari and the Night Brothers or Harry Potter.

Seven, Valley, and Thorn are thrust together as the unenviable “Spares”, witches basically destined to be powerless slaves. Fortunately, Seven knows that their only chance to avoid this fate is to complete an Impossible Task so she invokes this loophole in an effort to not be a “Spare”. But can she count on the shy Thorn and her schoolyard bully, Valley, to band together with her to solve this big task? A dark and dangerous monstruo is about to awaken and it’s coming for their children, especially Seven’s very magical baby brother. Their impossible task is to take on and defeat a Nightbeast. It will take all their knowledge and cunning to track down and defeat this legendary beast.
As the girls work to complete the task, they also have to navigate their relationships. The story is told from Seven’s perspective. She’s a hardworking, straight-A student who feared the very thing that has happened. Thorn is a very shy, new girl in town with a complicated past, directly related to the monstruo attacks. Valley is, at least according to what Seven first thinks, a spoiled “Hill” girl from a rich family who has liked nothing better than to bully Seven. Ah, how wrong Seven is about them. The relationship building and growth of Seven, Thorn, and Valley is wonderful.
Does the idea of Spares sound as monstrous as the Nightbeast? Why, yes. It is. And the good people of the Twelve Towns are actually trying to do away with this cruel and archaic practice, but the monstruo crisis affecting the cities is distracting from the work to amend the laws. As the witchlings work on their Impossible Task, it becomes clear that the Nightbeast isn’t the only monster they need to vanquish.
A great start to what I hear is going to be a series! Yay! When is the next one out? Because I am ready. I loved it. This is the second book I’ve read by Claribel Ortega… be sure to check out Ghost Squad too! The author is a delight and I recommend following her on Instagram.
Things I loved - the plot, character development, internal development of the main character, how the story unfolded as it progressed, the little bits and baubles of the magical world, and the execution of the plot twists.
There wasn't anything I didn't really like, that I can think of at the moment that wasn't answered somehow with the text.
Overall, I plan to recommend this to people who have kids who love fantasy, alongside adults who wished this type of book existed back when we were kids, too.
PS. This needs a movie and/or tv show or cartoon. All of the things, PLEASE!
There are so many themes touched on in this book and they all hit so hard. But before I venture into that, I just have to say I love that everything just goes sideways from the start and only gets worse for Seven. It clearly shows her growth throughout the story and the arc she develops. I also like the interwoven political aspects and socioeconomic lifestyles based on the type of coven they entered. This led to those tough experiences with injustices as well as the thoughts of superiority vs inferiority.
In addition to those, there’s also the aspect of abuse and bullying that is brought up and how newly teens handle those types of situations. Ultimately bringing the story to focus on the theme of life’s what you make it.
Let’s not forget the illustrations which are so beautiful and whimsical. ⭐️ Even without the color, they are vibrant and the line work makes things pop.
I Highly recommend this for readers 10+. It’s a story about friendship, loss, coming of age, growth, magic, getting to know oneself and even touching on insecurities and bullying. There’s lots to gain from this start to a new series!
I can’t wait to dive into the next book, Witchlings: The Warmest Winter (Book 1.5 short stories) and Witchlings: The Golden Frog Games (Book 2)
Seven knows exactly which coven she and her best friend belong in. She’s worked hard and studied her whole life for this, so she is obviously going to be placed in House Hyacinth, then become a world-renowned journalist / botanist and change the world.
Naturally… that doesn’t happen and instead of House Hyacinth, she’s categorized as a “spare.” In order to keep her magic, Seven volunteers herself and her fellow spares to complete an Impossible Task. The only problem with the impossible task is… well, it’s impossible. Also, if she and her reject coven of spares fail their impossible task, they’ll be turned to toads. So yeah, it’s pretty important for them to complete this task.
Ortega creates such a charming, wholesome atmosphere with pure, lovable characters, a fantastical setting, and a mystery that I feel is genuinely just as satisfying to an adult reader as well as to the middle grade audience that it is intended for. I haven’t been so thoroughly sucked into a world like this in so long.

The world, the characters, the plot, I don't want to give anything away, but THERE ARE FROG RACING COMPETITIONS, do I have to say more?
I laughed, I gasped, I even had to check some Bach's concertos. There are lots of Easter Eggs hinting at other books and other characters; it's just full of amazing things! I don't want to spoil it! All I can say is that, I can't wait for the next book, and for more people to read them so we can geek about them together.
I know this series will be a classic in years to come! ✨🐸✨
