For her entire life, the Name-Bearer’s sole purpose has been to receive and deliver the names of the future monarchy from the Flowers of Prophecy. But when the child is finally born and the Name-Bearer is sent to the Flowers, they refuse to name him. Instead they deliver a prophecy; another child was born who is more worthy of the Naming, and if they are found and brought before them it will usher in a reign of peace.

Having failed in her duties the Name-Bearer is considered a traitor to the crown, and must hide among an elite sect of warrior women where she experiences found family, friendship, and love. Her training as a warrior helps prepare her to embark on her quest to find the Unnamed Prince, clear her name, and bring peace to her realm.

A story of magia, warrior women, found family and love - and not accepting who you are told to be, but embracing who you are destined to become.

Review

"Lush worldbuilding that draws on a rich blend of Latin American cultures--the food, the language, the art, the colors. A group of characters you become incredibly attached to. Sweet and tender moments that are highly likely to make your eyes leak. (I'm not crying... you're crying.) Queer representation that doesn't overwhelm the story but is, well, just entirely natural. Sentences of incredible description that will knock your socks off. A beautiful magic system that captures your imagination. A group of skilled, flawed, ambitious, and sympathetic warrior women who know how to wield swords, throw knives, and braid flower crowns. (Because, duh.) An epic, folkloric quest through palaces, temples, dangerous forests, and massive canyons. Oh, and did I mention that it all starts out with GIANT SENTIENT FLOWERS?"

- Jared Gulian, author of
An Olive Grove at the Edge of the World

"The world building is beautiful and it made me massively nostalgic for Guatemala. Plus it's a queer fantasy coming of age story with a badass warrior MC (basically all of my favourite things!)! After that ending, I can't wait to find out what happens in the next book!"

- A.K. Mulford, author of
The Five Crowns of Okrith series

"I have no doubt Natalia Hernández is the new voice of authenticity we were all looking for. Her Queer Fantasy debut novel "The Name Bearer" brings readers an unique Latinx experience filled with Folklore, traditions, secrets, loyalty and love. An inspiring tale para la raza!"

- Jessie from Goodreads

An Indie Author, Natalia is THE Indigenous, THE Latinx, THE Queer Book Nerd ! She does an impeccable job representing the Latinx, Sapphic, Trans, and NonBinary communities throughout the entirety of her novels. Her world-building and inspiring characters leave readers in a breathtaking state as they experience the development of a Found Family between five Elite Warrior Women. It is truly a gift to witness these women embrace and empower their camaraderie rather than compete with one another. This is absolutely a five star read and I cannot wait to dive into book two.Below are some of my Favorite Quotes from book one. I hope they further encourage you to read the book and support the author.“There were young girls everywhere. They were short, tall, slender, muscular, round. Some were missing limbs, or an eye, or had other outward disfigurations. It seemed that any young woman was given an equal opportunity to become a warrior, they were each fiercer than the next and all devastatingly beautiful in their strength and resilience.”“She learned how to be strong and steadfast, loyal and decisive, but also that earning those qualities did not make her any less of a woman. She witnessed firsthand how femininity was not exclusive to soft spoken words and fancy dress, and that embracing more traditional “feminine things” in no way made anyone weaker.”“For the Goddess knew that young women need more than just training; they also need love.”“You think that your love for your friends, your caring, makes you weaker than the others. This is a wonderful book. The world building is fantastic, the magic system makes sense, the politics are solid, the people are interesting. All of the base mechanics are well laid out. Ms Hernandez has a beautiful way with her prose that makes this a warm, smooth, delicious read. Her premise is unique and her characters are interesting and relatable. This is my favorite book since Name of the Wind. I can't wait to finish this review so I can start the next book. Just amazing.

"The Name-Bearer" by Natalia Hernandez is a captivating tale of destiny, identity, and the power to shape one's own path in a world defined by magical prophecies.

The story revolves around the Name-Bearer, whose lifelong duty has been to receive and deliver the names of future monarchs from the mystical Flowers of Prophecy. However, when the Flowers refuse to name the newborn prince and instead provide a prophecy about another child who can bring peace to the realm, the Name-Bearer's world is turned upside down. Branded a traitor to the crown for her perceived failure, she seeks refuge among a group of elite warrior women.

What unfolds is a beautifully woven narrative that explores themes of identity, friendship, found family, and the acceptance of one's true self. The world-building in the story is rich and immersive, drawing readers into a realm where magic and destiny hold significant sway over the characters' lives. The characters themselves are well-developed and relatable, each with their own unique struggles and strengths. The Name-Bearer's journey of self-discovery and transformation is a central focus, and readers will find themselves rooting for her as she seeks to clear her name and fulfill the prophecy.

While the book offers a compelling narrative and a richly imagined world, the pacing can be a bit uneven at times, and it feels like a setup for future installments. I feel like it would have been best served as one longer novel. Nevertheless, the strengths outweigh the pacing issues.

I’m 35 and have been reading for awhile now. I normally don’t review but I had to with this one. I’ll leave the summaries to everyone else who has done it and just say how I feel.
I love the story and world building. I love the intermingling of language. I love the characters. I ABSOLUTELY love how it handles women, relationships, and character feelings.
I’ve found myself feeling along with the characters. I’ve found myself grinning and kicking my feet. I’ve also found myself immediately adding the second book to cart as soon as I finished! Thank you so much for a great reading experience!

In all honesty, I don't usually read fantasy, but I could not pass on the opportunity to read a queen and Latiné inspired book. Natalia writes so vividly, there were parts were I paused to imagine how it could occur to a person to string words together like that. Full of excitement, beautiful imagery, and emotion. Can't wait to read book two!

3.5🌟. The writing in this book needed another pass for me… there’s a fair bit of telling, not showing, and a number of places where it felt like it could use editing to make the structure stronger. That said, I really enjoyed the world and the characters and the concepts, so I will definitely be reading the second book.

its literally so good and i cant wait to read the sequel already.
SOMEWHAT SPOILERS AHEAD
i was worried about the pacing at the beginning when i read that she would have to join the danaryens for a decade but i think the author did a good job with it!
only thing is that im not super a fan of the potential of a love triangle (or square?) that i feel like is coming up but ill deal with it lol

The world Natalia created is so colourful and full of vibrancy. Some of the reviews mark how descriptive the book is as a flaw, however, I disagree. I felt like it lit up all my senses, I could taste the food, smell the sweat of the warriors, the fighting held so much weight! I loved getting to know our Name-barer, and the other Danrayan Warriors, and I am super excited for the next book The Follower of Flowers.
I recommend this book to all of my reader friends all the time, and I’ll probably keep recommending it for years to come.

I happened upon this book in a list of books read by friends of my friends and it just jumped out at me. I immediately downloaded it, jumping in without looking over any reviews or other information. It was definitely the right choice. The story, like the cover, grabbed my attention and held it firmly. I loved the characters, the setting and imagery, the magic, the home found at the temple, the relationships. All of it. I can't wait for book 2 to come out!

The world Natalia builds is vibrantly colorful filled with the richness of latine culture. To me it was amazing to recognize bits and pieces of my partner's culture which made the world even more magical.

The story itself is so incredibly well written. I was mesmerized from start to finish and will recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

And then I haven't even talked about the cover yet. The cover is as rich and colorful as the story the pages hold.

This really is a must-read and an amazing debut from this author! I can't wait to read more from her.

I devoured this novel in one sitting, drawn into the sprawling world that Natalia Hernandez has created and enthralled by the story of the Name Bearer. Hernandez effortlessly combines all of the great elements from beloved fantasy novels with the beauty of coming of age stories and even better, queer coming of age stories! The fact that the cast of characters is so incredibly diverse with a wonderful well rounded Latin young woman as the main character is further proof that we need more of this kind of story, filled with the kind of diversity that the world NEEDS to see. Gorgeous, I highly recommend reading this novel, you won’t regret it, though you might be left desperate for the next instalment XD
