Dr. Jeremy Taylor, a Unitarian Universalist minister, has worked with dreams for over 40 years. He blends the values of spirituality with an active social conscience and a Jungian perspective. In the late 60's, while doing community organizing in Oakland, CA, and in the early 70's, as Director of Marin County (CA) Headstart, he discovered that dreams were a tool for both personal and social change. Since then Jeremy has taught thousands how to work with their dreams in groups and individually. He teaches at many colleges, universities and seminaries, and has led workshops all over the world. He is one of four founders of the International Association for the Study of Dreams and served as its president 1994-95. Jeremy is also a published poet and prize-winning screenplay author. He lives near the Napa Valley in California. More information on his scheduled workshops at jeremytaylor.com.

Dreams are a bridge between our conscious and unconscious mind

Dreams are a bridge between our conscious and unconscious mind
Jeremy Taylor spent his whole life analyzing dreams and it was inspiring to read his stories about helping people overcome their internal struggles. Dreams are often our subconscious mind telling us things we don’t want to hear. Like the young man masking his aversion to his religious promises or the woman who realizes her dreams are covering up a childhood molestation. When people repress these struggles, and refuse to acknowledge them, they can manifest in their slumber. Especially recurring dreams, which can often be nightmarish.By the time I had finished the third chapter, I had the first dream that I’ve remembered in a long time. In his book, he suggests that simply deciding to remember one’s dreams will help with recollection, and that is exactly what happened to me. I had a dream where I was trying to get into a fortress. In the dream it was a house, but I recognized that it felt impenetrable. I was then following a cat that seemed to be leading me on a path to get inside, when at the very last minute the cat slipped into a doorway that was immediately shut off to me.My interpretation is thus: The “impenetrable fortress” is representative of a loving romantic relationship. My subconscious is telling me that I want one yet it is something I feel like I cant quite attain. I’m trying to get into one by the means of chasing pussy (aka getting laid is my main motivator) which always seems to slip away at the last moment. Naturally I have spent this past week wondering if I should ditch the casual lifestyle for a monogamous relationship. It’s funny how sometimes a book seems to fall into your hands right when you need it most. I wonder, however, if instead of the right “time” for a book to come across your path, if perhaps it is the right book that makes the magic. I think this is that kind of book. No matter when I was going to read it, it would have impacted me because I inevitably would have had a dream that spoke to me. And sure enough I did.I was amazed at all the scientific and industrial insights that came from dreams. Most importantly was the idea for the modern sewing machine. With the inventions of the spinning jenny and the power loom, the sewing machine was the last bridge for the industrial revolution to cross. The idea for putting the thread hole in the tip of a sewing needle came to Elias Howe in a dream, and the sewing machine was born. It completed the economic structure of the retail clothing industry we know today.Although not the aim of this book, the final chapter on zen meditation left with me a really golden nugget on enlightenment: “Enlightenment is habitual intuition.”

Having read the book with care, and having experienced the author live, I can and will testify that, for the group in which I participated, the processs works, and the book fairly represents the process. All dreams that can be remembered ultimately do seem "to come in the service of health and wholeness." Taylor-style Dreamwork combines a form of intimacy with respectful distance, because only by looking deep within "as if it were my dream" can a group member have anything to say about someone else's dream. So, each dream belongs to each member of the group -- in individual versions. This process is illustrated, with huge quantities of theoretical material tantalizingly presented. Quoting Taylor again, "I am a fanatic because I am convinced from 30 years experience. Don't take my word for it. I am the circus barker outside the tent, touting the wonders of 'Jo-Jo the Dog Faced Boy.' Come inside the tent and see for yourself." I agree. The book conveys more of the flavor of the live experience than one would think possible.

This is one of the most accessible books on dream work that I've read -- and by "accessible" I don't mean dumbed down, because there's insight & intelligence in these pages, born of decades working with dreams. The emphasis here is on dream work in a group setting, exploring & explaining the advantages of this particular process, while warning against some of the potential pitfalls, especially for the inexperienced & ego-driven. Taylor places his focus on the healing aspect of dreams, sometimes edging a little too closely toward New Age thinking for my taste -- but that in no way invalidates the material he presents. He's quite open about his own personal preferences & even prejudices, and doesn't pretend to be all-wise & all-knowing. So the reader has a clear-eyed picture of what to expect going in, which I respect. For anyone who values the wisdom & self-knowledge to be found in dreams, this is an excellent resource; for anyone who doubts that dreams mean anything, this might just change your mind. Taylor comes across as warm, caring, and experienced in such work -- just the sort of guide you'd want when venturing into the universe of the Unconscious. While he provides plenty of background & theory, this is above all a practical, hands-on book. Recommended!

I have read other books about dream interpretation, but I was still dissatisfied with my ability to understand my own dreams. Then I happened to read this book, and all the pieces of the puzzle came together. I think that this is probably the most influential and helpful nonfiction book I have ever read in my life, and over the decades I have read tons of books. This is a groundbreaking book, and deserves ten stars, not five.

I first bought this book years ago. I keep giving away my copies as gifts. I've reread it several times each getting more from this book. The other books written by this author are good but this is the best. I love dreams, and this book has given me more insight into my dreams then just the usual associations. Like the author, I think each dream tells us something we need to know.

Book arrived as described, however, the "very good"
designation labeled by the seller, is misleading and incorrect! Any 'highlighted' book with 'markings' in the
margins, should be rated no higher than "acceptable."
At ($4.00) the paperback is fair priced.
