From 1956 to 1971, the riverside suburbs to the southwest of London, from Richmond, through Twickenham to Kingston, nurtured a music and youth culture scene that shaped the Sixties. While Liverpool produced the Beatles and the Merseybeat sound, Richmond upon Thames launched the Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds and countless rhythmic and bluesy imitators. Richmond’s annual outdoor jazz weekend evolved into a rock festival that continues until today at its substitute home of Reading. Secluded on a private island in the Thames, the Eelpiland club, as well as being one of the best places in Britain to experience live music, doubled as a laboratory for maverick experimental social-working.

Underpinning the scene were three visionary characters: ‘Prince of Pan’ Arthur Chisnall, book-keeping jazz fanatic Harold Pendleton and Rasputin-like impresario Giorgio Gomelsky. What they got up to around Richmond and the impact they had on popular music in the UK has until now never been given the recognition it deserves – this book places them at the heart of a great lost chapter in the story of Sixties London.

Raving Upon Thames is lavishly illustrated throughout with 70 black & white illustrations and endpaper maps.

Anyone interested in the history of rock music and/or modern London history will love this book (as I did). It had me at the opening line, “I never meant to write this book:I only wanted to read it”. Such an interesting story, and so well told.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you're into 60's music, you must buy this!

If a degree course in 1960's music exists (not sure if it does,) this book should definitely be on its essential reading list. It's both fascinating and very readable. I live in the Richmond area, and love 60's music but missed all the 'fun' described, by about 15 years. If you're into any late 50's and 60's music, I can promise you, 'Raving upon Thames' will not disappoint. Like a good film, I'm now reading it for a third time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent history of music in and around Richmond.

I am slightly biased in that I grew up in Richmond. However if I had not, it would still get 5 stars. A really interesting read about the music scene in and around Richmond. Starting with Jazz moving to R&B and beyond - psychedelia. If you are interested in music in the UK from the late 50’s to beginning of the 70’s a must read.

As a local back in the day this book evoked wonderful memoriies of a brilliant time in my teenage life, in the words of an old song. "Ah yes I remember it well". What fun we had.
