A Jewish member of the French Resistance, Sim Kessel lived for almost three years in Nazi captivity. The bulk of his time was at the Auschwitz concentration camp, where he survived torture, starvation, and even his own public execution through extraordinary luck. His remarkable and terrifying story shows in knowing and intimate detail how guards and kapos under the Nazi system degenerated into conscienceless killers, and how the desperate scramble to survive dehumanized Kessel's fellow prisoners.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Many simply incredible tales of survival have come out of the Nazi death camps, but none more so than this. Kessel, a member of the French Resistance, was arrested by the SS at age 23. He was tortured, sent to work in mines, and dumped into a series of work and death camps. While he was being hung, the rope miraculously broke, so he was sentenced to be shot. Instead, he fooled his captors by assuming the identity of another prisoner and lived to tell the tale.

Review

Harrowing...The bare manner of his telling adds a rare dimension...A frightening statement is powerfully implicit in this book. ― Publishers Weekly

A horror story beyond comprehension.... It is a miracle that Sim Kessel lived to tell his tale. In fact, it is a series of miracles. ―

I cannot say, with a clear conscience, that I "enjoyed" this book because of the macabre events that it records. But, Kessel is a good writer. It reads as a narrative should, and he helps you understand the perspective that a person gets when imprisoned at one of these camps.

I cannot find any information on Kessel to find out the rest of his life story. If you know of any links to such information, I would love to get a "reply" from you here. I am hoping that Kessel lived a full life afterward.

Like Sam says, lady luck, rest, food and some friends make all the difference. I will not die today, maybe tomorrow but not today I have read many survivors books and they are all different. Hell is the same hell but everyone experiences just different enough to make every story so real! I admire them all so much. Friends think I'm weird to read survival books, they are all different stories. The first books I ever read were. Biographies and I never got over the enjoyment.

Well written but lacked detail of the people who were in camp with him. it seemed that there were so many experiences that he wanted to include in the book, that he did not have the time to properly explain them as in depth as he obviouksy wanted. It may have been more helpful to know his past more; he references the resistance and his boxing career, but the audience never fully understands his involvement in either before the book begins. It was a very short read, so worth filling your afternoon with nothing g to do. It is not as gripping as other reviews make it seem, so don't expect to be so imbedded in this book that you want to do nothing more than finish it.

It is an amazing testimony of the strength, endurance and tenacity of man. It is also an almost unbelievable witness to the the hate, cruelty, brutality, and evil that supposedly civilized man still carries inside.

This book is very well written by the author, a truely remarkable story,
and a man destined to survive ,against all the odds.I bought the book as
used in very good condition at 15 pounds,I see a new one offered at 90
pounds well its not necessary to pay that much, that would be a rip off
so lets just be reasonable and you may sell it at the correct value.
