An offer of a bed for a few nights within a sustainable community starts Cassy Howells off on a trajectory far from what she, or her family, ever imagined would happen when she and soon-to-be ex-boyfriend, Hamish, meet a group of happy, smiling people in a white van. Only Cassy travels with the group to Gethsemene. She's drawn in, sees the beauty of the secluded bush area, not far from Rotorua, New Zealand, and she feels calm after the tumultuous time she has recently had with Hamish. She likes the people she comes to know and decides to stay. Then she meets their charismatic leader, Justin.
The reader lives through two worlds unfolding: Cassy's 'new' life, one of order and safety, companionship and love juxtaposed with the growing worry felt by her parents and sister over the lack of communication with Cassy.
Short-listed for the 2018 prestigious NZ Ngaio Marsh Award, this proved to be a page-turning, un-put-downable novel. I've not read any other Charity Norman novels, but I can see I will pick up another of her's before long.
Highly recommended.

Something a little bit different for me, but I was tempted to read this on the basis of good reviews from a few trusted friends. I found myself totally absorbed in the story, but at the same time acting as a curious bystander, observing my own reactions to the characters and events.

Set in New Zealand, on the shores of remote and ruggedly beautiful Lake Tarawera, this is the story of British backpacker, Cassy, who meets some friendly locals and goes to stay at their sustainable farming collective for a few days. She's a bright, educated, independent, modern girl, so does she realise it's a cult? Well...

At first she understands that this community is a bit different and her guard is up, but she's in a very vulnerable position at the time, and the members actively withhold the details of the true nature of their community. What Cassy sees and experiences at Gethsemane is a safe, happy, nurturing and self-sufficient community where everybody from the very old to the very young is loved and cared for; where everyone has a purpose and can contribute for the benefit of all. She likes it - she decides to stay for a while.

Then she meets Justin, the charismatic founder of Gethsemane, and she falls under his and Gethsemane's spell.

Five years later, her family back in England is still trying to release her from Gethsemane's pull.

Wow, it's easy to see how this sort of thing can happen. What really surprised me about my own reaction was that I was on Cassy's side! 'Leave her alone', I thought, 'she's happy there!' They're not hurting anyone... Perhaps though this was partly because I didn't like her parents - her dad in particular. I thought they got too worried, too quickly. It seemed like a gross overreaction, when she'd only been there a few days. But as time passed, I became more sympathetic to them. It was also interesting at times when the author let us into Cassy's head to see that inwardly she was still rational, even if her outward behaviour belied this.

As you would expect, the ending of this story was very dramatic. Not all happy endings for everyone, but quite realistic I think.

Apart from the insight to a very different world, I also loved the setting. At first I didn't realise that Lake Tarawera was a real place, but one morning I was sitting on the couch reading this book, when I registered that someone on breakfast TV had just mentioned Lake Tarawera, so of course, off to Wikipedia I went to find out more.

I haven't read anything by this author before, but I will be checking out her other offerings.

I thought this was excellent. The author developed the story cohesively and held my attention to the end. The storyline was about vulnerability, disenchantment and misperception. It showed how vulnerable we are when we allow disenchantment with the things life throws at us, and stops us from using logic. We then become prey to the power of persuasion and give away our personal power. Cults do this so well. The story revolves around a young disenchanted woman, her encapsulation into the cult and the effect this had on her and her family. Well worth reading.

As Cassy left her family at Heathrow – “see you in September” - to head overseas on her holiday of a lifetime with her boyfriend, little did anyone know that it would be a very long time until they saw her again. And Cassy would be changed, irrevocably changed, as would the lives of her parents, Diana and Mike, and sister Tara.

New Zealand was their final destination before returning home for a wedding, but it was there that Cassy was invited to stay for a few days at a farming community. Gethsemane was filled with adults and children, loving, farming, teaching and self-sufficient members who knew happiness; let nothing negative touch their lives. As Cassy became more involved with the community and met Gethsemane’s leader Justin, she was convinced she should stay. But should she? What about her family back in England?

See You in September by Charity Norman wasn’t at all what I expected! The community Cassy joined was a cult – nothing more, nothing less – but the peace and tranquility of the valley on the side of a lake had Cassy believing her previous life wasn’t the right one for her. The manipulation – wow!! I rolled my eyes a lot through that! Different, intriguing, tension-filled in places – See You in September is a great read which I recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful read

A book you could easily read in one sitting and if you can't you will find yourself sneaking a chapter or three as you pass it by during the day.
Told from different angles I found myself both empathising and abusing Cassy's parents for their actions. I could've throttled and yelled at Cassy for her ignorance but grew to love the character.
A story told well about an intriguing subject that we know little about but end up with a huge insight into.
Intense and unforgettable, well written and rivetting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Paradise - is it too good to be true?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 23, 2018
The author was born in Uganda, lived in several vicarages in England, qualified as a barrister then gave that life up and moved to New Zealand to become an author. That background is relevant to this book. Despite being an avid reader for many years, I do not think I have read a book on this theme before. Essentially, the story is about a young law student who tires both of life in a middle class, stable English family and of being a law student. A backpacking trip to New Zealand turns sour and she is befriended by warm, wonderful people who introduce her to life in a secluded cult. We know that she is being seduced by these people because the author intermittently explains the steps that need to be taken by any cult wishing to entrap recruits. I found the book disturbing but it certainly hooked me. The leader of the cult believes himself to be a reincarnation of Jesus Christ and he is a very convincing character. The ending is somewhat predictable but I found the book to be a thoughtful and subtle portayal of this weird, hidden world. As the father of two daughters I was rather spooked by the concepts described. Well worth reading and a genuine challenge to our concept of what makes up a loving family.
