A man dwelling in darkness...
Lord Julian Caldicott has come home from the war in ragged health and with a reputation in tatters. All he wants is to recuperate in private without bringing any further scandal on the family’s good name. His godmother inveigles him into serving as her escort to a rural house party, whereupon circumstances conspire to prevent Julian from resuming his reclusive existence.

Must shine the light of truth on a dangerous deception.
Julian becomes the subject of rumors, lies, and whispers, and soon he’s faced with a choice: Wage one more battle for honor’s sake, or be branded a traitor to all that he holds dear. He will enlist unlikely allies, face old demons, and vex every other guest on the premises, but he will not stop until he’s brought a criminal to justice–or died trying.

I started writing as an antidote to empty nest and soon found it an antidote to life in general. I am the sixth out of seven children, and was raised in the rural surrounds of central Pennsylvania. Early in life I spent a lot of time reading romance novels and practicing the piano. My first career was as a technical writer and editor in the Washington, DC, area, a busy profession that nonetheless left enough time to read a lot of romance novels.

It also left enough time to grab a law degree through an evening program, produce Beloved Offspring (only one, but she is a lion), and eventually move to the lovely Maryland countryside.

While reading yet still more romance novels (there is a trend here) I opened a law practice, acquired a master's degree in Conflict Transformation (I had a teenage daughter by then) and started thinking about writing.... romance novels. This aim was realized when Beloved Offspring struck out into the Big World. ("Mom, why doesn't anybody tell you being a grown-up is hard?")

I eventually got up the courage to start pitching manuscripts to agents and editors. The query letter that resulted in "the call" started out: "I am the buffoon in the bar at the writer's retreat who could not keep her heroines straight, could not look you in the eye, and could not stop blushing--and if that doesn't narrow down the possibilities, your job is even harder than I thought." (The dear lady bought the book anyway.)

Great read. Julian and the entire cast of characters were interesting and the writing is thoughtful and entertaining. I am in for the rest of the series.

This is the first book I have read from Grace Burrowes. I loved it - the characters have complexity, the story is interesting, and the villain was not obvious. If you are expecting a romance, this is not it. There are the beginning stages of one. I am getting the next ones in the series.

This was my first of GB's books and I was pretty much instantly smitten. I've read two more in the past week. This book is about a young well-born veteran of the Napoleonic conflict(s) and Burrowes did a very nice job of forming his character. Although he's traumatized from being held (and to some degree tortured) by the French, he is regaining his strength, his eyesight, and hopefully at some point, his manly humors. There are hints of romance to come, and in the meantime he is bringing scoundrels to justice and mopping the floor with the most pompous members of the ton. Hyperia West, a childhood friend, is his ally, and the reader hopes someday she will be more than that. I just love a good turn of phrase and being challenged by new and interesting words. So much fun; highly recommended.

The plot, characters, and repartee in this Napoleonic-era novel of the British upper class house party set is fun, even fascinating. The love story that’s hinted will take a few more novels in the series in order to flourish, I’m sure. I’m ready to read more.

Hero and other characters are damaged veterans of Napoleon’s wars on Europe.
The hero believes himself a traitor but his memory fails him. Society believes it too. The plot centers on this fact but is moved along on another character’s perfidy.
Very cleverly done.
I recommend to anyone appreciating a nonviolent action story.

I am very particular about what I read. I prefer a particular style and mode of storytelling. Grace Burrowes nailed it! The writing is intelligent, funny and extremely clever. The un-hero hero was marvelous! An in-extraordinary man made extraordinary by the crap life throws at us. His compatriots work well with his eccentricities and when mischief is afoot, let the games begin. I highly recommend!

I have always liked Grace Burrowes, but I think she has outdone herself with this series. I fell in love with Julian Caldicott. I think he is the most interesting and complicated character I have come across in a long time, and I will be interested to see how his story continues to unfold. The plot line kept me guessing, and, as usual, her writing is exquisite. I also really liked the secondary characters, especially Canning and Atticus, and will be happy to see more of them. All in all, this book is a wonderful read and I can't wait to read the second installment.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an exuberant & feast full story
Reviewed in Canada on August 22, 2023
Both Georgette Heyer & Jane Austen would applaud this work of pure classic literature disguised as a historical romance novel. The words chosen paint a rich and clear picture of an England fresh from the horrors of war. As eloquently and realistically as a movie or please god, a long rich series on prime.
The hero has returned under a thunderstorm, not just a cloud of scandal, bowed & feeling broken with shame. His godmother is peerless and seeks to do miracles with her wit & love. A villain, a trail by fire with the best cast of characters make this book the envy of Gosford Park. You will be sated but panting for the next book or two. Thank you dear lady.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Non-Gothic Mystery and Likeable Main Characters
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 20, 2024
I rarely give five star reviews to historical novels from this period, but I very much enjoyed this one and will probably read it again at some later date when I have forgotten most of the details. I actually found myself reluctant to put the story down and I didn't do any skipping, something I do often do when the lust (not love) begins or there is yet more talk about clothing (which I see as just filler most of the time). The period mistakes also didn't jar much.

I found the main character likeable and admirable, as was the main female character. The various nuances of human behaviour added interest and the mystery wasn't too OTT, a little different than usual and more believable than many. I look forward to learning more about Lord Julian, Hyperia and also Just Atticus in the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterclass
Reviewed in Australia on December 30, 2023
Engaging from the first word, Lord Julians’s first mystery economically but effectively draws the principals we shall undoubtedly meet in further stories. Lord Julian’s post war trauma is delicately drawn, with compassion and understanding. And his gradual rehabilitation is just as convincing. The mystery itself is a twisty puzzle that left me gobsmacked. Not the whole, but the why of it. Can’t wait to start the next one.
