As the fight for equal rights continues, Defiant takes a critical look at the strides and struggles of the past in this revelatory and moving memoir about a young Black man growing up in the South during the heart of the Civil Rights Movement. For fans of It's Trevor Noah: Born a Crime, Stamped, and Brown Girl Dreaming.

"With his compelling memoir, Hudson will inspire young readers to
emulate his ideals and accomplishments.” –Booklist, Starred Review

Born in 1946 in Mansfield, Louisiana, Wade Hudson came of age against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement. From their home on Mary Street, his close-knit family watched as the country grappled with desegregation, as the Klan targeted the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, and as systemic racism struck across the nation and in their hometown.

Amidst it all, Wade was growing up. Getting into scuffles, playing baseball, immersing himself in his church community, and starting to write. Most important, Wade learned how to find his voice and use it. From his family, his community, and his college classmates, Wade learned the importance of fighting for change by confronting the laws and customs that marginalized and demeaned people.

This powerful memoir reveals the struggles, joys, love, and ongoing resilience that it took to grow up Black in segregated America, and the lessons that carry over to our fight for a better future.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up-The author, publisher, and civil rights activist spent his formative years in Mansfield, Louisiana. Nicknamed Brother, Hudson was introduced to leadership at an early age as he began to organize baseball teams, plays, and other projects. The adults in his life saw this natural ability and began to encourage him to hone these skills. While his life was filled with family, faith, and love, Hudson was slowly becoming aware of the injustices inflicted on his community. He noticed the ways Jim Crow laws impacted the lives of his friends and family and wondered why. His desire for progress led him to create the civil rights organization S.O.U.L (Society for Opportunity, Unity, and Leadership). The organization and the police's response to it would lead Hudson to a life of activism. This memoir offers a snapshot of a community enriched by love and chained by systemic racism. VERDICT A great pick for public and school libraries looking for firsthand accounts of the effects of Jim Crow on young people.-Desiree Thomas, Worthington Lib., OHα(c) Copyright 2011. "Defiant" is an inspiring story of resilience, creativity, forgiveness, and hope.

It becomes evident to those of a certain age that one cannot control many of the events that happen in this world. So we can chose to be perpetually angry and shout at all injustice and unfairness or to seen things in another way. Defiant: Growing Up In The Jim Crow South by Wade Hudson shows that other way. Born in 1946, in Mansfield , Louisiana, Wade creates a timeline that travels through his youth to his young manhood, which includes 12 days in jail on trumped up criminal charges. But this was before his "awakening," which was the realization that life is truly what you make it. Wade writes: "So I went into my world, writing down my thoughts and trying to find as much new information as possible with limited resources that were available to me" ( 165 ). This masterfully written book shows how a young Black man fought the power of White authority by creating his own path, creating his own world. Targeted for a young reading audience this is truly a book for all ages because it shows that self-education is the best education. Wade had many mentors and teachers but it was his independent studies that helped him become the author, publisher, poet and CEO of Just Books that he is today. This authentic gift of himself presents the lessons learned, humorous and profound, that shaped a young Black man whose love of Black literature uplifted himself and his people, to create his own world that is loving and just and fair, compassionate and kind, ever expanding and pulling in EveryOne, young and old, Black and White, this is Wade's World, speaking Truth to Power!

I read an advance copy of Defiant and have now bought 10 copies for friends and family. Wade Hudson's story of growing up in Jim Crow Louisiana is history that comes alive, not out of a textbook. Growing up in a small town surrounded by family and friends, Wade is at first shielded from overt prejudice, but it's there and it comes on more strongly in each chapter. As the horrible events of US history in the 50s and 60s unfold - events we've all read about - they come closer and closer to home, and we experience Wade's awakening to systemic racism in a very deep way, and there's no looking away. But you won't want to. We need to feel this chapter in our history to our core, because it's still going on, and young people, families, all of us, need to relive it all in person through Wade. There is also much joy and hope here -- of rising above many challenges, of great community role models, and yes, also the fun of sometimes just playing baseball. There is much to celebrate as well. Young people - our future leaders - need to read this book -- to experience actual history through the eyes of someone their own age. The book moves quickly and middle graders and teens will love it. This is a modern, inspirational coming-of-age classic.

I gave this book as a gift to someone from Wade Hudson's home town. They enjoyed reading it. They were present at some of the incidents described in the book but their recollection was somewhat different than Mr. Hudson's. The book brought back memories for them.
