Issues addressed include shame, depression, substance abuse, self-injury, spirituality, medical care, PTSD, flashbacks, and panic attacks. Review

I am a rape survivor and it is in my role as such that I have come to know Matt Atkinson. Matt is one of those rare individuals who brings to his work not only a tremendous intellect and vast knowledge of this subject matter, but more importantly a depth of compassion for and understanding of the experiences of rape survivors, the likes of which exist in no other individual I have ever encountered. This community is lucky to have Matt serving as an advocate and therapist for those who have often felt forgotten, betrayed, weak, misunderstood, or even worthless. I know this because I have felt each of those and more. However, it is by way of Matt s patience and unwavering kindness that I am now able to see myself not as any of those things, but as a survivor. I will know this now for the rest of my life. --Victoria Bailey, Attorney

There is no way to describe how much this book has meant to me. I am trying to gather and absorb as much as I can. I have struggled many years with what happened to me, and sometimes I feel like I have gone nowhere. But, when someone like Matt, who knows what kind of work this actually is, recognizes the effort, it makes me proud of what I have accomplished. I have to admit, I was skeptical. I'm not used to a male being the kind of person who could really understand this. But I had been to therapist after therapist, and none of it was helping. Matt's methods worked--boy, did they work!--and I can't imagine I could have found the same recovery using any other way. This man knows his stuff. He really gets it. And what he's written is SO true and it really answered my questions. There is no way to describe how much this book has meant to me. I am trying to gather and absorb as much as I can. Matt brings his years of experience working in the sexual violence field to a new audience. His understanding of the intricacies of working with those affected by sexual violence as well as his therapeutic knowledge will be helpful to counselors and anyone who wants to support victims and survivors of sexual violence. --Jennifer McLaughlin, Sexual assault specialist with the Oklahoma Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault

Matt Atkinson is a Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Professional with a background in work with trauma survivors. He has worked in crisis services in prevention of domestic and sexual violence, where he developed and implemented programs with women's prisons, university sports teams, churches, and Indian tribes.

In 2004, he became the first male given the National Award for Outstanding Advocacy and Community Work in Ending Sexual Violence by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center. In 2005 he was awarded "Most Therapeutic" by his professional peers, and he received top marks from client evaluations every year of his practice. In 2006 he began to teach college courses on domestic violence and crisis intervention as an adjunct professor.

In 2009, Atkinson provided a series of all-day training workshops for therapists, funded through grants and organized by the Oklahoma Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. The methods presented in "Resurrection After Rape" have become the "gold standard" treatment approach taught to many crisis workers/therapists.

In 2010, Atkinson wrote "You Can Take Your Power Back: A Guide to Your Rights After Rape", a booklet distributed to thousands of victims of sexual assault in English, Spanish, and Braille.

Atkinson has organized a retreat/recovery weekend for rape and trauma survivors, drawing in participants from across North America and the EU, and featuring a Grammy-award winning musician as guest of honor. Attendance increases each year, and many participants identify it as the single most healing experience of their lives.

He also developed a model program to establish multiple Sexual Assault Response Team services in rural communities so that rape victims will have improved access to crisis care. He still manages to accept frequent requests to speak to university classes, conferences and workshops, such as keynote speaking one of 2009's Domestic Violence Awareness Month events.

Matt has degrees in Art/Human Physiology, Behavioral Science, and a Master's in clinical Social Work. He is married and has two sons. He is also a successful, collected oil painter.

I haven't finished reading the book as yet. Due to the subject matter, I am taking it slowly and reading it in chunks to let it digest. I originally encountered this book in a support group, we used a chapter for a session. That one chapter had me hooked. So, soon after, I purchased it from Amazon. There was so much in it that sounded like the author knew me and my thoughts and feelings personally. Which means a lot of sexual assault survivors probably have similar views on life.It kind of makes me feel more connected and less alone.

It does a lot of answering questions, such as the definition of rape, and gives tips on how to find a good therapist, explains things like triggers and how brain chemistry changes, and many other things. There are also suggestions for journaling and just helps to give things a different perspective then what one might already have.

I cry a lot when I read it. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I don't regret purchasing it. It was the most excited I ever was to receive a book about rape. It makes me think about things I don't necessarily want to think about, but I'm expecting good things as a result of it. It's been helpful in giving me something to talk about in therapy as well.

I recommend this book. Sometime in the future, when I have more time and am not reading a bunch of other books, I plan on getting his book of letters to survivors by survivors.

Following my rape 10 months ago I finally decided that it's time to seriously focus on recovering from what happened to me. I'm about half way through the book and am already blown away by it. The author has such a grasp on the many ways that rape affects a person. I had bought the book with the intent of working through things on my own and discontinuing my counseling at the rape crisis center. After intensely reading and working through the journal work the book has you do for about a week I did go into emotional overload. This isn't just a book to sit and read. I agree with the others that it is a very good idea to work with a counselor/therapist while working through this book. It's an extremely emotional process and the book offers useful tips on managing symptoms and working through them. It was also a comfort hearing stories from other survivors, knowing that what I'm experiencing is normal! Used in conjunction with counseling I HIGHLY recommend this book to anybody who has been a victim of rape and for friends and loved ones of victims who would like to better understand what they're going through. If you choose to purchase this book I wish you luck on your journey to healing, after reading this book, I really do think healing is possible...

I am nothing short of amazed at how much this book has helped me. I suffered for years with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and was incredibly afraid to deal with everything I was feeling. I thought that spending time sober and facing my emotions would leave me a complete, dysfunctional mess for a long time, if not forever. I couldn't have been more wrong. I healed more in the three weeks I spent working through this book than I did in the three years I spent avoiding my pain. It changed what I believe about being raped and about myself. If you are struggling to recover from sexual abuse, PLEASE find some way to help yourself, and talk to someone about what you're going through. There are therapists, counselors, support groups, crisis lines, shelters, books, articles, and likely many loving people in your life who can offer support...many of these resources are available for free so don't let anything stop you. I highly recommend this book as a starting point for your healing or a supplement to your therapy.

I work with clients and have to be careful to whom I recommend it. Your client needs to be highly self-motivated, be educated, have a good vocabulary, and be intelligent. Many clients lack one of more these attributes and need a much simpler book. For the right client, this is an excellent resource.

I purchased this book from Amazon based primarily on the customer reviews. I have a trauma story that includes multiple sexual assaults; though I have been in and out of therapy over the years to work on healing from that, I never found a resource that I actually found to be helpful. A lot of books for rape survivors are informational, but not many really walk you through a process of healing. I'm not going to lie, completing this book takes a lot of work; but every time I look at my folder of journal activities and writings, I am amazed at how much it really did make me feel better. By the time I finished the assignments in the book, I felt like a completely different woman. I felt whole again...

I wished that no one would ever have a reason to buy a book like this one, but if you've been raped and you're ready to heal, this book will help. If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would... it's that wonderful.

This is not a "fluff" book giving information one already knows. It is a HARD recovery book to work in, just as the author says it is. It has suggestions and homework that had never crossed my mind. I can only read a few pages at a time because it is intense - and there is a reason for that. Don't shy away from that fact. The title, "Resurrection After Rape" is just that. - Resurrection. And I'm not there yet. I figure it will take months if not a year or more to work through, which is the whole idea. I would like nothing more than to rush past the incident and move on. I have now painfully realized that no matter how tough I am, it just doesn't work that way and I was getting worse instead of better. Any other problem I have had, no matter how traumatic, I was able to address and move on. Not this time. Get the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A survivors best healing tool ever on the journey to recovery.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 7, 2014
This is amongst the best ever book on how to heal and thrive after rape. I have read many and this one does the job alone. The case studies are on adult survivors of child abuse but it's relevant to all victims as it applies to all survivors but focuses on the gender of survivors being females and rapists males. It debunks and challenged myths, it explains that becoming "promiscuous" after the trauma is a sexual grieving progress and repercussion not an indication of character and behaviour or minimises the trauma. It identifies also the other side of the coin which is sexual anorexia. It is sensitive, none judgemental, resonates with lots of survivors and stories and extracts are taken by survivors. It challenges feelings of guilt and shame in an insightful manner and also tackles the feelings of feeling dirty in a way that heals and changes perspectives reminding us that the bodies cells rejuvenate and are replaced constantly so that our bodies are not the same ones when we were abused. That we have the same value just as a note would even if folded or scrunched in our wallets. It suggests exercises such as making a collage, to redefine sexuality and separate abuse from sex. It covers additions, the importance of forgiveness but does not suggest forgiving abuser or encourages it and speaks of self forgiveness from own blame. It challenges detrimental social messages and attitudes such as blame the victim and talks about rape culture and how rapists are socially conditioned not psychologically disturbed. It outlines the kinds of rapists in general but never makes generalisation on neither abusers or survivors. It explains the different stages of healing from victim, survivor to thriver and also three modes: the victim, the warrior and the wise one and how we can work with all three of these modes. It also recognises that negative sexual experiences can be harmful and need healing even when rape or assault isn't part of it. It's a great healing guide and book and one that will transform your life. It is the very heaven sent book you need to help with recovery, be understood in ways that few can understand and give you that validation, that support and understanding and knowledge and resonate deep within your heart and soul, restoring your faith in humanity and knowing that someone does understand and that you are not alone or misunderstood. Highly recommend it. It's a must for survivors, those that want to help them and understand the subject and for professionals too. Simple to read and also a free PDF is available on the site. Thank you to the author for such humanity and transforming many lives. Worth every penny because it will last a lifetime and is invaluable. Don't hesitate to buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, informative and vital
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 13, 2013
I was looking for a book to help me be better able to help my best friend recover from rape as i was becoming increasingly aware I lacked understanding of the stages people go through after rape and the best things they and others can do to recover.

The book has already proved invaluable as i was able to help talk her through a panic attack that she was suffering after a counseling session. I'm also able to avoid making mistakes such as taking control and making her paranoid through increasing her personal security.

The book is invaluable for anyone recovering from rape (and is best used in conjunction with counseling) and is of great use for anyone supporting another through it. Its a bloody horrible thing to see someone go through and the fact that this helps the recovery makes it worth its weight in gold. The book is a "workbook", which encourages you to journal and which is filled with facts and not platitudes. Its hard work to go through (I was moved to tears a number of times), but its effective and that is what you need.

The book is available in ebook format on the Ressurection after Rape website for free, however, if you can afford it, buy it, because its that important a book. If you cant afford it or need it fast, then it is there.

Good luck with your recovery or helping another to recover. It is possible, sadly, many, many have done it before. do not underestimate the effect it has on yourself or a loved one. It is incredibly mentally damaging.

I have read many books on healing from rape / sexual abuse. This book stands out as being the best one by far. Don't let the title 'resurrection' put you off if you do not have a christian faith - this is not a 'christian faith' style book, but a factual and extremely helpful manual. It debunks many of the common rape myths, and provides a lot of research and true stories that will help you to heal. It is also linked to an excellent online forum. There are actual things for you to do on your healing journey. It is inspirational and practical and should be the first book every survivor reads. It offers hope, but does not balk at the very real struggles that there can be on the way to wholeness.
