Richard Sparks

Born in England, and a graduate of Oxford University (Exeter College, where, like both JRR Tolkien and Philip Pullman before him, he studied English Language and Literature), Richard started out as a writer of stage plays, comedy revues and TV, for such shows as Not the Nine O’clock News. Rowan Atkinson performed his Schoolmaster sketch in John Cleese’s The Secret Policeman’s Ball. UK TV credits include The Famous Five, The Flying Kiwi, The Optimist, The Worst of Hollywood, and a lot of script editing. On being hired by Columbia Pictures TV, Richard moved with his family to Los Angeles. His lyrics have been recorded by talents as diverse as Dom de Luise, Eric Idle, Vanessa Williams and Plácido Domingo. He has written libretti for several new operas composed by Lee Holdridge (TV’s Beauty and the Beast, et al.), produced by the LA Opera, as well writing new English versions of German and Italian classics. His non-fiction books, Diary of a Mad Poker Player, and its sequel, Getting Lucky, chronicle his adventures in the poker boom of the 2000’s. Along the Cherry Lane is his biography of the music producer, Milt Okun.

“High Adventure Spiced with Low Comedy,” inspired by his love of online role-playing games, New Rock New Role is the first of four volumes Richard has written so far in the New Rock fantasy series, and is his fiction debut.

Awesome blend of IRL humanity meets eGaming fantasy

Awesome blend of IRL humanity meets eGaming fantasy
What a great adventure series! It's the best of eGaming (battles, creatures, smack-talk) meets true fantasy, and in a unique and original way. I love RPG stories and author Richard Sparks truly brings to life each world whether IRL, a gaming environment, or the truly amazing fantasy worlds they travel. The book keeps you connected to the characters, their humanity, as the author takes you into the minds of truly unexpected gamers / adventurers. Even at over 400 pages, it's an easy and fun read. I've purchased them as gifts (my college son and some nephews in their 20's) and got great feedback. I also purchased the audio book (read by the author, he has a great British accent) and enjoyed listening to it again on my commute. I heard this might be a series and excited to continue their journey!

A super fun fantasy adventure, with all the spells and swords you could want, but also the painful process of the protagonists having to learn, from scratch, all the skills they took for granted before. Hero's quest of the middle-aged gamer guy in a sense. Who hasn't had the thought when sitting at a screen! How would you handle it? Could you do better? The extra treat of it though is that's is well written. The author doesn't hold back on carefully expressing what is happening, not just back story, but also what the characters feel as they go through it all. How does it feel to find your staff? Your heartstone? Anyway, a good read all round.

Three gamers find themselves in a fantastical world where they are their own avatars, for real. What follows is a wild ride that gallops along, with many twists and turns and more than a few laughs. I loved the strange characters they encounter. An original, witty tale and a real page-turner.

New Rock New Roll had a little terminology that was new to me since I’m new to the rpg genre but it wasn’t overwhelming nor did it deter me from reading on.

The story pops you right in to a tournament and I applaud Sparks for capturing my attention from the start. It was fast paced and you got to learn about Daxx, our main character and his backstory. Really enjoyed how relatable he is and through gaming you got to see how much of a passion he not only has for what he does but the friendships he has made.

To me the story had a strong beginning but it seemed to have run into a bit of a slow almost meandering pace in attempt to flesh out the characters and story while on side quests. Sparks did a great job on the humor and for me the adventure could have moved a bit faster but the concept of this book was very appealing to me. Thanks to Arc Manor and NetGalley to get to read the ARC.

I loved this book. Richard ponders the question, what If games really mattered - video, table top, whatever you love, what if how you won the game mattered just as much as winning it?

I gamed for decades with everything from high-minded LARPers to tabletop murder hobos, and this book lets you relate to all of it. It is an odd twist, melding a hero and a heroine's journey tropes into one, where found family and personal growth matter to succeed in adventures. Speak fair, and don't be rude to strange women in old cottages, beside rivers, or at a crossroads. I bought fully into the experience of Draxx, Grell, and Qrysta, and cheered for them all the way to the end. I can't wait to read the next one!

If you love high fantasy, gaming, or just stories about how friendships and cooperation make a difference in any adventure or world, this series is for you. And the twist at the end was a real treat. Well done, indeed.

New Rock New Role is a rollicking romp across time and space, guaranteed to entertain and enchant. An action-packed adventure filled with wit, wisdom and whimsy featuring an assortment of some of the most charmingly unique, delightfully chatty characters you’ll ever meet. And I loved spending time with all of them - in the merry swashbuckling pages of this book. Welcome to odd new worlds that twist and turn to the rhythm of realms and realities with their own set of rules in a powerful game of life that all adds up to an enlightening magical journey you’ll never forget.

As an avid MMORPG player (WOW, Elder Scrolls, DDO...) I love the characters he developed. I can really relate to them. So interesting to read his take on what "real life" character leveling would be like: weapons training, spell training, etc. And I also love the conflict the characters have between themselves having hidden behind a monitor for years, and not really knowing any personal information about each other

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting and funny. Can't wait for the sequel !

"New Rock, New Role" is a brilliant novel full of good plot twists and characters who are really well thought out. The adventure follows Daxx, Grell and Qrysta, a trio of gamers who play an MMPORPG game called Sword and Sorcery, which reminds me of DnD online. When they win the worldwide championships, instead of getting money, the trio are teleported through the game into a new world where they spawn wearing Noob level gear, but they somehow can’t seem to fight or do magic as they used to. Daxx gets captured by slave traders and is taken to be sold off, but on the way he meets Grell again, who is an Orc. Rather than being sold, they are drafted into the army. Along with their new friend Oller, they capture the City of Rushtoun where Princess Esmerelda sends them on a quest to defeat Jurun, an ancient evil king who seeks to return to the world and dominate it. On the way they find Qrysta again.

The author, Richard Sparks, seems to be enjoying himself and brings us along for the ride. Nicknames are funny (e.g. Serjeant B*$tard, Sir F*%ing Pelican and Fugg). The race of Nibluns remind me of Dwarves but with a better sense of humour. I chuckled at Sparks’s use of acronyms, even in a purely medieval world (GAA-Guild of Arcane Arts, TG-Thieves Guild). It’s just one of those books that makes you laugh out loud a lot. I can’t wait for the sequel !

P.S. Spans the ages: written for adults, but my 12-year-old also devoured it and is now a huge fan!!

Oh wow, the book really delivers all the fun its cover promises!  It really is a page-turner of an adventure. I'm a massive videogame nerd and I've just gotten into the LitRPG genre, and the more I read, the more I loved the story and the characters.  I couldn’t wait to see how it all turned out, while also wanting it to never end, so I’m glad to hear that there are sequels on the way.  A great world, great characters, great action—and plenty of laughs.  A real breath of fresh air, highly recommend :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Imaginative, clever and a real page turner
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 23, 2024
Richard Sparks' new blockbuster, New Rock, New Role is a true phenomenon. It cleverly brings together two different worlds - fantasy and gaming - with the resulting collision generating an absolute supernova of a novel.

This combination is such a clever idea that it's surprising we've not seen it more often. The plot is imaginative, the main characters engaging and clearly drawn, and the overall result is really a lot of fun!

We quickly empathise with Daxx and his teammates as they find themselves in a series of adventures and faced with difficult, thought-provoking challenges. It's a rollicking good read, with lots of pure thinking, spiced with plenty of fantasy.

Adding to this recipe is a sprinkling of literary references, with the clues helping the main characters on their journey. Richard obviously knows his English Literature, and these snippets add to the joy of the book.

The main event though is the thrilling adventure of Daxx and friends as they travel through the book. It's a fabulous, fantastical journey, generating a page turner that's truly difficult to put down.

Without giving everything away, this is Book One in the New Rock series - and if the rest of the series is anything like this, it promises to be an absolute epic. I can't wait to see what happens next!
