Gnome on the Range: Otherworld Outlaws 1 (a Weird West Celtic Mythology Adventure) Paperback – January 8, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
The West wasn’t won with grit and guns. It took a sawbones with fae blood to git ’er done.
Book 1 in the Otherworld Outlaw series, an action-packed romp through the Wild West, loaded with living myths, dark magic, and bloodthirsty monsters aplenty.
Lula Cullen isn’t sweet and gentle, and she’s got no time for anyone’s guff. Esteemed Bostonian surgeon, she’s a woman with a career in a time when the very idea is laughed at. And nothing, not even her fiancé and his Brahmin family’s traditional values, is going to get in her way. Until…
Her ambitions are derailed like a runaway steam engine when her uncle and only living relative is killed in a freak lightning accident. His dying words—“Find Toxicore Darkheart. He’s the only one who can protect you now”—launch Lula into an ill-conceived and unchaperoned trip to Abilene, Kansas, where hanged men dangle for days for minor crimes and only married women are considered respectable.
Mistaken for a soiled dove the minute she hits the frontier, Lula decides to hell with respectability and starts swinging her uncle's shillelagh at anyone who asks for it. And the West sure has a lot of folks asking for it. Upon finding Darkheart, whose peculiarities go well beyond his odd name, she unearths long-buried family secrets tied to her bloodline, secrets that ultimately led to her uncle’s murder and the disappearance of her parents when she was an infant. And worse, much worse, she discovers that though she’s the one hunting for the truth—she's also being hunted.
Caught between a werewolf, a necromancer, and two fae queens of the Tuatha Dé Danann, Lula has to trade her scalpel for a Colt .45 and do it fast. Because they’re not just after her, they’re after her blood.
Don’t miss any of the magic-packed Otherworld Outlaws series

- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2023Update: I did get the next two cheap and Lulu has won me over. This will not change your life but it’s a fun story and very original. If you’re not a fan of cheeky it may be annoying OR you may be won over too. I just bought the fourth in the series for full price so there ya go…
Original Review…
…Lula is a shallow and annoying protagonist and has an even more annoying sidekick. That said, I did enjoy it but I’m leaning toward not reading the next. I got Gnome on the Range really cheap and if the next one goes on sale for cheap too then I might go for it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2022I enjoyed this. The writing is pretty good, and the author makes the weird intersections of magics work better than I expected. V
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2025This story has a great concept, I felt. However, the execution was a bit lacking. There are a few throughlines set up in this book for an obvious series, and, truth be told, none of the storylines that we focus most of the book on get resolved. There is a 3rd act twist that becomes a higher priority and once it is resolved, then it somehow gets lessened by other statements.
Overall, I think the writing is fine and the concept is fine, but the book is simply a lead-in to the next without a solid resolution.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2023The title caught my attention and I just had to read it. So glad I did. The diverse characters and the way the relationships developed was so well-done. And I'm so here for the twice-named black cat. I can't wait to see what happens next to doctor and adventurer, Lula Cullen.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2022This was a huge departure from the type of stories I usually read. But it wasn't half bad. The plot is easily followed and the characters are interesting. I can easily recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2022Great story, interesting characters, and good plot development. I'm looking forward to reading the sequels. If they're as much fun as this book was, I'll be a happy camper.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2023Tammy Salyer’s "Gnome on the Range" is a Weird Western delight, a page turner that takes us on a heart-pounding journey blending action, magic, and the supernatural. I absolutely love how Salyer embraced fantasy mythology and mashed it together in a Wild West adventure. I felt a little whipsawed—in a good way—being taken from gritty action to fantasy to serious doses of the creeps.
The story introduces us to the fiercely independent and refreshingly unconventional Lula Cullen, a Bostonian surgeon who defies societal norms and expectations. From the moment we meet her, it's clear she's not your typical 19th-century woman, and that sets the stage for a great narrative.
The unexpected twist of a freak lightning accident and her uncle's enigmatic last words serve as the catalyst for a gripping, engaging plot. Lula's journey from the refined world of Boston to the rough-and-tumble streets of Abilene, Kansas, highlights her determination and resilience. I do so enjoy a strong female protagonist, and the narrative voice Salyer uses for Dr. Cullen is clever and entertaining.
The book’s roster of characters is diverse and well-crafted, each with their own unique quirks and powers. Lula's transformation from surgeon to a gun-toting, shillelagh-wielding force of nature is fun to witness, and her interactions with figures like Toxicore Darkheart add depth and complexity to the story.
"Gnome on the Range" keeps you hooked from the very first page with an intriguing mystery and a richly developed world where the Wild West meets magic and monsters in equal doses. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars A confused heroine
First class writing. Vivid imagination. Bagful of quaint characters. Oireland jammed into Wild West. Delicious. Hilarious.
The heroine stumbles from one catastrophe to another. If a choice is made by her, it will be a bad choice. A good heart and a bad head. An old fashioned damsel in distress, forever having to be rescued.
