The history books remember her as Empress Mathilda, but her path to sovereignty began when she was just a girl named Maud. Engaged, estranged, and crowned by the age of twelve, this is her story . . . As the firstborn legitimate child of King Henry I of England, Princess Maud is faced with the fiercest crisis of her eight-year-old life when she learns that she will be sent to Germany to marry the Holy Roman Emperor. To make matters worse, her husband-to-be is in the midst of a disagreement with the Pope, and the threat of civil war continuously rages. Thrust into the middle of the greatest political controversy in Europe, Maud must learn to navigate the turbulent political waters while also managing her own transition from girl to woman. Students of history will know the ending: Maud will successfully become Empress of the Holy Roman Empire, Queen of Germany, Queen of Italy, and the sole legitimate heir to the English throne. But The Girl Empress invites readers to join Maud on the journey of a lifetime, experiencing the depths of her hopes and dreams, her anxieties and strengths, her successes and failures. The history books haven’t done her justice.

This is a historical novel in the true sense of the word. It doesn't just list an event or two from the time period. Instead, it gives details of many of the conflicts Queen Maud's husband has with Popes and nobles. At times, the book was quite heavy handed on the historical side. I would have enjoyed seeing more of how Maud's life revolved around the events, or how she survived in her day to day living.

It's interesting to note the comparison of eight-year-old Maud leaving home to become a bride and that of an event toward the end of the book. Maud is visited by her daughter-in-law and grandchildren. There her nine-year-old granddaughter is still allowed the luxury of being a child, whereas Maud herself had to give up her childhood in order to become a queen.

A truly fascinating book. This is not a book for the casual reader, however. If you love history and seeing political events unfold, you are likely to soak up the pages of this book. If you just want to read a story set in a historical period, though, the depth of detail about events may frustrate you.

I received a copy of this book through the Kindle Scout program.

A real treat to read a historical tale based on genuine history and not following genre formulas. The language is well chosen - such as a woman of dignity might choose in her later years to recount the days of her life to a beloved family member. About half way through this book, I found and ordered the second book in the series, which I am thoroughly enjoying, and I will order the third as soon as it becomes available.
The first book is about The Empress Mathilda as a child. It gave me a real appreciation of the incredible courage it took for this youngster to face leaving her home, going to a new country, learning languages and customs, and dealing with what is truly a lack of a real childhood -- and a real separation from those she loved.
Made me glad NOT to have been born the daughter of a king.
The book is not a romantic romp through history - rather it is the tale of the development of a woman of real depth and faith.
I give the author great credit for not submitting to the requirements of the publishing styles, genres, and the resulting formulas we have become so accustomed to.
I am honestly tired of reading formula books -- seems that if you've read one, you've read them all.
This is refreshingly different, intense in its conveying strong feelings and emotions in an understated way, and a fascinating look at the history of the period besides.
I wish to thank the author for her determination to do this right -- to honor the woman she is writing about - to communicate her best understanding of just who this very great lady was. It's been a long time since I have enjoyed a book as much as this one. And I am enjoying the sequel as well.

In general it was interesting to enter the factually based insight of a medieval girl/woman. The set up was unusual of an elder writing to daughter. As usual medieval history is full of characters with same or similar names and tangled lineages. I did get author’s use of untranslated words and phrases to portray the likely real experience of living in a place and time where language barriers proliferated; however, I would have liked translations to complete my understanding of plot and dialogue. Ok book.

. . . Because I had nominated it for publication as part of the Kindle Scout program after finding the sample excerpt appealing. On the plus side, this book is clearly the product of extensive research and a scrupulous commitment to historical accuracy, something I greatly appreciate since historical works that are loaded with anachronisms and glaring historical errors are all too common. Also the prose is clear and grammatical, something that one can't always count on nowadays. The first person narrator and main character is Maud, child bride of the Holy Roman Emperor, later Duchess of Anjou and would-be Queen of England. In this volume she tells her life story from about the age of seven through the majority of her years as Empress. Problem number one--the child Maud is not a credible character. No child of seven could possess the vocabulary or the perceptiveness in discussing adult topics such as international politics, theology, and marital infidelity that Maud does. Problem number two--for easily the first two-thirds of the book Maud is a mere looker-on. That does not prevent her, however, from telling us in excruciating detail about every royal bastard, rebellious noble and scheming prelate who plays even a minor role in her family tree or in the politics of her time. The result is that the book reads less like a novel and more like a stultifying history of the Holy Roman Empire in the early twelfth century. Finally, I was frustrated by the author's propensity for studding the narrative with passages written in Latin, German and French without providing translations or at least explanations that would allow the reader to get the drift of what was quoted. It happens that I can read French, but I think most modern readers would find passages in all these languages as incomprehensible as if they were written in cuneiform. In sum, The Girl Empress needs deeper, credible characterization; a tighter, faster paced narrative; and recognition that its audience is readers of popular fiction, not polyglot scholars, before it is ready for prime time. I participate in Kindle Scout because I like to support the work of fledgling authors. Thus I sincerely regret having to assess this book so harshly. Not recommended.

Empress Mathilda or Maud was the only English Queen before Mary I (if we discount Jane Grey). Although Queens were not forbidden in English law, Henry went through a lot of wives trying to avoid leaving an heiress to succeed him.

The author has provided an exceedingly detailed account of the life of Mathilda until the moment she becomes the heiress to the English throne. If you love the type of novel that leaves you with the feeling that you've learned a great deal, this book is for you. If you like action, it isn't.

I was determined to finish this but it was hard at times as it sometimes just seemed to be list of battles and travel. I learned a lot about Henry V Holy Roman Emperor but less about Matilda. I found it difficult to keep in mind how young she was during the period of the chronicle as the language suggested a mature adult. Also some Americanisms did creep in if only occasionally.
