Purchase options and add-ons
Still posing as Frederick, Christina escorts Lady Cecily, a young noblewoman joining Queen Isabella’s court at Westminster Palace, to London. Unexpectedly, Christina and Cecily fall in love. Their joy is short-lived, as their future together is seemingly impossible.
The wife of one of the wealthiest and most influential men in the city is Christina’s bitter enemy. Katharine Volker, whose lascivious advances Christina rejects, goads her into voyaging from her London home to the Baltic waters of her birthplace. Christina journeys not to engage in trade, as one would expect of a master merchant. She sails for a far more deadly purpose--to exact revenge on the pirates who killed her father and brother.
What will transpire in London during her absence and is there any hope for her lasting happiness with Cecily?
Christina must employ all her courage and fighting skill, as well as a secret weapon, to survive her adventure quest through pirate infested waters.

About the author
Lee Swanson is a retired soldier and teacher who is the author of the No Man is Her Master historical fiction series, including the titles "No Man’s Chattel," "Her Perilous Game," and the recently released "A Dangerous Journey Home."
Lee has enjoyed a lifetime interest in medieval history. Living in both Germany and England for extended periods of his life, he has traveled extensively throughout Europe, seeking out-of-the-way places with little-known stories to tell. Among these are the Scottish Marches that figure prominently in "Her Perilous Game" and the Kattegat shoreline of the Jutland Peninsula that is the setting for much of "Her Dangerous Journey Home."
Holding a Master’s Degree in European History from the University of North Florida, Lee’s thesis centered on the Hansa, a confederation of merchants from primarily northern German cities in the 12th through seventeenth centuries. Many of the colorful characters who populate his novels are drawn from the lives of these resolute wayfarers who traveled the waterways of Europe in search of profit and prestige.
Lee, his wife Karine, and their dog, Banjo now split their time between Virginia's beautiful Shenandoah Valley and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. A return visit to Europe is planned for the spring of 2024..

I knew nothing of the Danish Straits or life in the 1300’s. Nor did I know anything about the culture of the time. With dictionary in hand for the numerous unfamiliar terms for medieval weaponry, clothing, and maritime references, I quickly realized author Lee Swanson had managed to capture my attention and pull me into a multi-faceted tale unlike any I ever experienced before.
This is the third in a series by Swanson. And, even though I suspect it may have helped if I’d read the first two prior to Her Dangerous Journey, I was able to read this one without feeling completely lost.
Swanson is a scholar in European History who has spent much of his life studying and teaching medieval history. His expansive knowledge of the confederation of seafaring German merchants known as the Hansa serves as the foundation for many of the characters in this book. His excellent research and attention to detail lend themselves to a completed work that informs, entertains, and causes readers to venture to unknown territories- both literally and figuratively.
Christina Kohl vows to avenge the deaths of her father and brother. To do so, she poses as her dead brother, Frederick. She not only dresses in men’s clothing, she assumes his persona, learns the skills necessary to fend off pirates, and hones her business acumen as a merchant. She is so successful in pulling of this impersonation that she has been knighted by King Edward II. One drawback to this deceptive plan (although there certainly are many) is that Christina has fallen in love with Lady Cecily Baldewyne. When summoned to put her cargo ship into an organized effort to stave off piracy, Christina’s major focus is on her personal goal of avenging the deaths of her father and brother.
All the while, the reader is left to wonder what will become of the illicit and seemingly ill-fated love between Christina and Cecily.
Swanson deftly creates a supporting cast of characters who bring to light the vast differences between nobility and merchant, servant and laborer, refined and unrefined. He makes each one come to life in such a way that readers can see, feel, and hear each in his or her own element. Conversations are gritty. Descriptions of appearance and mannerisms are vivid. So believable are they, that they occupied my thoughts long after I finished the story.
Skillfully, Swanson takes the reader on a treacherous journey and then returns the reader to a place where many heretofore unanswered questions are resolved. On so many levels, this story is both complex and deeply satisfying from beginning to end.
When reading historical fiction from any period in history, one of my personal delights is to find that the author has left some historical notes, maps, or timelines for the reader. For me, these items help to transport me into the book’s timeline or perhaps gives me a reference point for future travels. Mr. Swanson has left some interesting and informative historical notes at the conclusion of his book. Kudos to him for doing so!
Lee Swanson
Review by Barbara Bamberger Scott
In this third offering in his No Man Is Her Master series, author Lee Swanson again explores the public world and private aspirations of a gutsy woman pretending to be a man, braving the seas while longing for a permanent connection with her true love.
Christina Kohl has already traveled far. After her father was killed and her brother Frederick presumed dead in an attack by pirates as described in a previous volume, circumstances array so that Christina, who has become strong, bold, and skilled in the arts of sailor and warrior, takes on Frederick’s identity. This disguise follows her into the latest adventures.
As this tale opens, we meet her in London where she has fallen in love with Cecily, a mutual but seemingly impossible relationship because Cecily must stay in England while Frederick, recently knighted, must sail away. Her voyaging, ostensibly to pursue international trade, is also poised on avenging the death of her father. She has the zeal for this challenge though leaving Cecily causes pangs of sadness. The ensuing escapades will include harsh combat, meetings with former allies, and a subterfuge instigated by her enemy, Katharine, bent on destroying Frederick at any cost, and dragging Christina’s cousin in on the plot. But more crucial is the discovery of someone Christina never thought to see again, and whose very existence could change her destiny and destroy her hopes for happiness.
Swanson, who holds a Master’s degree in European history, has clearly delved deep to create this most recent portion of his epic series. Descriptions of Christina’s donning of men’s clothes, with all the detail carefully set forth, prove his efforts at research, as does his wide knowledge of language and accent, from German to Scotch and English, from royalty to simple folk like Wig Reiniken who offers salty and often humorous advice to his fellow sailors.
Swanson presents aids to his readers with a lengthy list of the characters in this gripping yet poignant story and some historical background concerning medieval maritime action, including piracy and plundering as well as attempts on the part of national players to invoke some sense of law and order on the treacherous seas. Swanson’s work comprises a panoramic view of historical fact and neatly imaged fiction into which are woven the lives of men facing fear with indomitable grit, and a tender love story that sometimes sinks into the darkness of despair, making the reader hope for a final, bright dawning in episodes yet to come.
