Editorial Reviews

Review

"Bayer tells the sweet story of two bear friends and offers some gentle advice on how to be the best friend possible when sickness strikes."--Parade Magazine

"A tenderly written children’s book that hopes to bridge the gap between patients and pals by teaching kids how to be there for sick friends."--Cleveland Magazine

"[Bayer] describes the different things that might happen to the bear physically: 'Your friend might look different; she might have less hair. She might be too tired to play.' Then, it goes into all of the things you can do to help, such as bring cards, play games, or simply just be there. ... A great purchase for... supporting a friend through illness.-- School Library Journal

My best friend's 2 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with cancer. I bought this book to help her 4 year old boy understand his sister's needs. I don't want to delay giving it to them any longer so i won't be returning it but was disappointed in the condition it arrived in. Water marks noticeable on nearly every page.

I love this book oh so much. It makes understanding how to deal with something that is so hard to know how to deal with in a simple and joyful way. Good for anyone of any age going through the illness of a friend or family member. Kids aren't the only ones who need simple and helpful advice on things that are so hard to handle for everyone involved. Thank you, Vanessa. I sure do love you.

Have given this to clients and friends kids that are dealing with a sick friend or a parent. Clients have gushed over it and been so happy to receive it. Not to mention I sat and cried as I read it!!!! Amazingly written and very good advice we hear from all our clients with cancer. They’ve really appreciated the message.

This book beautifully simplifies the profound impact of just being there for a sick friend, while acknowledging the fear and discomfort that Is often present for a patient and their friends. Even the illustrations are soothing. I expect that this will become a valuable addition, not just to professionals assisting children affected by illness, but also to parents everywhere.

Very cute book for my toddler. Her Grammy recently diagnosed w/cancer so this book was a good tool in connecting what's going on w/Grammy to the beat.

My 4 year old son loves this book and I love reading to him over and over again (it can be tiring but not with this book) Written so beautifully. So glad I watched the interview with Stephen Colbert!

Beautifully illustrated. The story made me choke up when I read it aloud to my son for the first time. Such an important topic that I haven’t seen well addressed in this genre. I love this book.

I gave this book to a family whose father had just died from cancer and a baby was just born. Clearly, the book is written by someone who has "been there."

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what we needed!

I bought this book for my two daughters (7 and 4 years old), as I have recently had major surgery and am now recovering slowly at home. The book has really helped my children to understand why I am so tired and can’t do the things I would normally do. After reading the book to my 4 year old, she ran to find her Daddy and said “I need to make Mummy a card!” This is what happened in the story! My daughter gave me a beautiful homemade and handwritten card , and then put a blanket over me and sang me a lullaby (also mirroring what happens in the book). Honestly, my heart was bursting! So this book definitely worked for us. My oldest daughter hasn’t read the book yet, but I am sure she will have a similar reaction when she does 🥰 So I would definitely recommend this book! I also purchased the book “Ruby’s Worry” and my oldest daughter has found this book particularly good for talking openly about her thoughts and feelings at such an unsettling time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shame its "mummy bear" not neutral but fabulous message
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 25, 2021
I would love to give this 5* but its focus on "mummy bear" was a real disappointment as I bought for a little boy with a sick father. Theres no real need to have made the bear male or female and the message could have been a bit more open that way. Overall a lovely told story to explain why someone going through illness might not really be themselves
