In Over and Under the Pond, readers will discover the plants and animals that make up the rich, interconnected ecosystem of a mountain pond. Over the pond, the water is a mirror, reflecting the sky. These secrets and many others are waiting to be discovered over and under the pond in this sweet children’s book from Kate Messner and Christopher Silas Neal, the latest in their beloved series that offers kids a peek into hidden ecosystems.
ENTERTAINING AND EDUCATIONAL: Stunning illustrations paired with an easy-to-follow storyline make this a great read for any early elementary school student, while a glossary of animals that live in, near, and around the mountain pond enriches the reading experience.

Kate’s titles are frequently selected for One School, One Book and One School/One Author programs and other community-wide reads. Her books have been New York Times Notable, Junior Library Guild, IndieBound, and Bank Street College of Education Best Books selections. Her novel The Brilliant Fall of Gianna Z. won the E.B. This is an awesome children's book that teaches about the environment and about life in the pond. It is very well written and contains extensive vocabulary: It mentions different animals such as ospreys, minks and catfish. The illustrations are also beautiful, the color palette is very inviting.
Things that caught my eye:
* Would recommend for ages 3-8
* Gorgeous illustrations
* The story line promotes care for nature and the environment
* Diversity: The protagonist and his mom are black
* Small encyclopedia in the back containing information on the animals mentioned in the book

sweeping through reeds. The water's a mirror, reflecting the sky. Sunshine
and clouds - then a shadow below. 'What's down there?' I ask. 'Under the
pond?' Mom says. Under the pond is a whole hidden world of minnows and
crayfish, turtles and bullfrogs. We're paddling over them now.' " And so
begins the third in Messners' Over and Under series. The rhythms and
pattern of the opening pages echo her other two Over and Under books,
creating a familiarity before the book is barely begun. Once again, Messner
uses alteration, rhythm, and rhyme, in addition to descriptive metaphor ("minnows dart though waving
forests of grass") to describe the pond eco-system, both above and below the
waterline. These books are perfect bits of picture book nature
writing: engaging, interactive, educational, fun, and beautifully written
in their simplicity. Beautiful illustrations enhance the story, adding a whole other dimension to the work.
