Woniya Thibeault wasn't looking for an adventure of such magnitude, but when the opportunity to participate in Alone® Season 6 fell into her lap, she couldn't say no. Never Alone is the story of that journey.

Dropped into the Arctic wilderness—solo—as winter descended, Woniya intended not only to survive, but to thrive. With only a few tools and meager resources, she would need her survival skills, quick wits, and whole heart to make it through.

The skids scraped against the hard granite as the helicopter settled onto the barren peninsula. My fingers were shaking so badly from the adrenaline, it was hard to unbuckle my chest straps. Then, with one step down the ladder, I left the modern world and the rest of humanity behind.

I expected the land to be harsh and unforgiving, but I didn't expect that it would be so breathtaking.

Nor that I would fall instantly in love with it.

The northern wilderness kicked my butt repeatedly throughout the next three months, but each time it picked me back up, staggered me with its beauty, and showed me again how truly resilient I am.

My Arctic adventure could easily have been a grueling struggle, but by putting my trust in myself and the land, it instead became a beautiful journey to a deeper sense of connection and belonging.

In her debut memoir
Never Alone: A Solo Arctic Survival Journey, Woniya shares how months of starving by herself in the Arctic wilderness brought more healing than suffering, and led to a deep sense of belonging and peace. Her story affirms the incredible strength of the human spirit and shows us that strength comes in many surprising forms. Never Alone's message is one of inspiration and learning to trust in ourselves and the land around us; embracing the wild and being wholly and beautifully human, flaws and all.

Never Alone will take you on an Arctic journey through challenges and triumphs, joys and heartbreaks, and leave you inspired and wanting more.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Never quite at home in the modern world, WONIYA THIBEAULT was always drawn to wild places and the skills our ancestors used to thrive there, and driven by a desire to honor the natural world and to feel at home in and be a part of it. Woniya's master's degree in science and decades spent honing land-based living skills taught her how to live long-term in the wilderness, using the natural resources it provides. Three years after the solo challenge chronicled in Never Alone, seen on Season 6 of the Alone(R) series on The history Channel(TM), Woniya was invited to compete in an even more rugged spin-off series, Alone(R) Frozen, where she made history. With this second Alone(R) journey, Woniya made history in two ways: across her two stints in the wild she set a new record for cumulative days on an Alone(R) solitary wilderness survival challenge and also became the first woman to win one. Another memoir, about that journey, is in the works.

Beautiful perspective written to fill you up
Everything I'd ever guessed or felt about this author was confirmed after reading about her journey. Her sheer existence reminds me of what true sisterhood could be like. To know someone so well having never physically met. As a fellow Scorpio I understand her connections to, well, everything. Her story reminds me of the truly kindred spirits and souls I know exist even in this distracting whirlwind twentieth century life we live in. We should all stop talking about nothing, stop choosing time wasting distractions and simply listen more to, well, everything.Amen and bless you for sharing it all with us. May your gift of motherhood remind you to keep teaching for those in need and being available to those who do need but don't know it yet. Sending you beautiful karma and bountiful blessings. Smiles, Samanatha

OK, get your favorite beverage, turn off your phone, get comfortable in your favorite reading place and begin NEVER ALONE.  You will never want to be alone without your copy to pick up and read any chapter, any time. I originally ordered a paperback and then ordered a hard bound copy as well.  I wanted to be sure I had a copy when I wore out the paperback from frequent readings.  This book will interest all readers of all ages as it covers human drama in a unique setting. You'll learn about human determination to "surthrive" in isolation during extreme cold conditions. You'll learn viable techniques in gathering food if you ever find yourself lost in the woods for a few hours or days.   It is very well written in a serious, exciting manner and yet shares many events in a humorous way.  You laugh, gasp and some I know have even cried.  Woniya draws the reader in with her self-talk in tense moments, she asks the reader questions to get them to think about what they would do in a given situation.  This was written by a woman, yet appeals to men as well with specific survival details and general information of living alone with only your skills to sustain you. There are at least three sections of photos which are helpful and two maps that show the Great Slave Lake and her peninsula neighborhood in the Northwest Territories in Canada.  Great read, you can't put it down. Buy it, you'll love it. You'll keep your copy forever.

I was late in discovering the Alone show. I started watching the series in 2021 and ended up binge watching as I was so caught up in the stories of these amazing contestants. However, one person especially captured my attention and that was Woniya Thibeault in Season 6. I know I am not the only one, as she gained legions of fans around the world with her joyful spirit, amazing creativity and of course tremendous tenacity.

I think not only wilderness lovers but really anyone who appreciates courage, resourcefulness and true grit will be swept into this powerful and compelling true story of a unique and inspirational woman. Woniya brings us into the heart of her solo arctic adventure far deeper than we saw on her powerful journey on Alone Season 6.

Two things come through loud and clear. First is Woniya’s message about how we are all part of nature and how important it is to connect with nature, whether we live in the woods or in a high-rise in the city. And secondly, how our all-important mindset can get us through any challenge life throws at us, whether chosen (like her Alone adventure) or not.

In addition to her ancestral skills and her magnetic authenticity, Woniya is a very talented writer and weaves in enough of her backstory to help us understand how her Alone experience came to be, how it has impacted her and how it can help and inspire us, her readers. I think many of us will relate to things she has been through in her life. You have to read the story about the two little fawns!!! Heart-wrenching and healing.

I really was moved to tears by her story. Highly recommended!

I've never felt more inspired (and seen) by a book before. Woniya's heartfelt sharing of her story (both in and out of the Arctic) is incredibly beautiful both for people that have and haven't seen the Alone show (I haven't). It's a valuable read for every modern human as we need to remember the feminine perspective and learn how to be in reciprocity with nature if we want our world to continue. She brings spirit back to the world in a way that is enchanting, mesmerizing and funny. I am eating my meals with more awareness now and looking forward to my next journeys in wild places. Thank you Woniya for all the long hours you spent in front of an unnaturally lit computer screen to bring forth and birth your story into the world! And thank you for inviting readers so openly and honestly into your life!

This is one of those books where I save the last chapter for months because I don’t want it to end. I’m a big fan of Woniya and it was awesome to get into her emotions, thoughts, and beliefs as she recounts her experience. Who knew she’s also a talented writer?

This book about a woman doing something I can never imagine myself attempting instantly engaged me and became a deeply spiritual experience. Woniya’s writing is superb, gripping, humorous, and visceral. This book deserves the fame of Cheryl Strayed’s Wild, and you can watch her journey as it happened on Alone season six and find her episode by episode commentary on YouTube. Once you enter Woniya’s world you won’t want to leave. I can’t wait to read her next book. A perfect gift to give those who value what passion and determination can accomplish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read! Recommend.

I think I found Alone during Season 3 or so and binged the first 3 seasons and then told everyone they should check out the show, I remain a huge fan to this day. Fast forward to Season 6 and we had already seen Vancouver Island, Patagonia, and Mongolia, now we were headed to the Arctic of all places. Great Slave Lake.

Woniya was an immediate favorite of mine and I loved watching her on Alone and Alone: Frozen. This book gives you a much deeper insight into her journey and, I think, into her as a person.

The book is entertaining, easy to approach and read. It is composed of quick, short chapters detailing aspects of her journey leading up to Alone, and her time alone in the wilderness interspersed with defining moments from her earlier life that shaped and molded her into the amazing, strong, and inspirational woman she is today.
