A Book of Untruths is a family story told through a series of lies. Each short chapter features one of these lies and each lie builds to form a picture of a life-Miranda Doyle's life as she struggles to understand her complicated family and her own place within it. This is a book about love, family and marriage. It is about the fallibility of human beings and the terrible things we do to one another. It is about the ways we get at-or avoid-the truth. And it is about storytelling how we build a sense of ourselves and our place in the world. A Book of Untruths is a surprising, shocking and invigorating book that edges towards the truth through an engagement with falsehood. It brings questions to its readers; not answers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A raw and startlingly engaging memoir

As honest as they come. I found so much of interest in this book. It is primarily a memoir but the author’s introspection draws in research, interviews and perspectives which add another dimension. Full of sharp observations and reflections which are woven together by a deep sense of curiosity and commitment to finding a truth amongst the lies. It’s a very, very engaging read and one I will think about for a long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars What happens to a girl who has never learnt to value herself.

Uncomfortable reading a good insight into a young girl without any sense of self value - topical!!! - I dd not find it gripping as some people have reported - however it was good and I did finish it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lie per chapter!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 2, 2022
'A book of untruths' is a memoir of growing up in the UK in the late 1960s, early 1970s. A delicately told family story, it is, at the same time, also a collection of lies, one told per chapter. The narrative is interspersed with meta reflections on what constitutes a lie or non-fiction. But don't be fooled, these are carefully crafted pieces in the collection of lies that make up the story, or our lives. A complex and highly recommended read.

A very good read, challenging and interesting. Looking at our complicated human relationships and how we try to rebrand ourselves to avoid our own realities.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sparky and controversial
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 4, 2019
Miranda Doyle takes the reader on a voyage of discovery about her own past but that misrepresents this as just another autobiography. Rather, the story is backed-up with good explanations of research so that the reader ends up knowing about more than just the author.

Doyle is honest enough to frequently remind the reader that there may be other views of the same story and is particularly careful to include another view from a family member so that the story and the strata of society is seen 'in the round' . Despite this the book is full of combat and is compulsive reading.

The author does not pull her punches, even when it is her own nose she is thumping.
