Ness Brown's The Scourge Between Stars is a tense, claustrophobic sci-fi/horror blend set aboard a doomed generation ship harboring something terrible within its walls.

“A perfect scare to swallow up in one sitting.” ―Chloe Gong, #1 New York Times bestselling author of These Violent Delights
A LibraryReads Pick! • Featured on the 2024 RUSA Reading List: Science Fiction

As acting captain of the starship
Calypso, Jacklyn Albright is responsible for keeping the last of humanity alive as they limp back to Earth from their forebears’ failed colony on a distant planet.

Faced with constant threats of starvation and destruction in the treacherous minefield of interstellar space, Jacklyn's crew has reached their breaking point. As unrest begins to spread throughout the ship’s Wards, a new threat emerges, picking off crew members in grim, bloody fashion.

Jacklyn and her team must hunt down the ship’s unknown intruder if they have any hope of making it back to their solar system alive.

“Highly recommended.” ―Library Journal, STARRED review

Review

A LibraryReads Pick! • Featured on the 2024 RUSA Reading List: Science Fiction

“A perfect scare to swallow up in one sitting. Filled with blood galore while holding tender humanity at its center, this is my favorite type of horror.” ―
Chloe Gong, #1 New York Times bestselling author of These Violent Delights

“Following in Jack’s desperate footsteps will have SF, horror, and thriller readers on the edge of their seats waiting to see what explodes out of where next….Highly recommended for readers who like their science-fictional thrills to be both real and out of this world at the same time.”
Library Journal,STARRED review

“A perfect blend of science fiction and horror…Short, fast, engaging, wildly entertaining, and unexpectedly gory, it almost demands to be devoured in one sitting.” ―
Locus

“Trust me, if you think you know where this story is going, you're wrong. Combines the sudden, heart-rending fear of immediate danger with the freezing spun-out dread of being lost in infinite space. Just wonderful.” ―
David Wellington, author of The Last Astronaut

“I loved everything about
The Scourge Between Stars. From the eerie thumps within the Calypso’s walls―the call is coming from inside the spaceship!―to the mysterious collisions that endanger the aging generation ship, I devoured these pages. Magnificent.” ―S. A. Barnes, author of Dead Silence

“This novella has everything I want in a sci-fi horror: lots of action, excellent character arcs, and a solid resolution.” ―
Buzzfeed

“Are you afraid of generation ships? And outer space? And dying airless, stranded in nothing? Then keep your eyes out for
The Scourge Between Stars, which crosses The Expanse with Pandorum by way of Event Horizon and emerges darkly victorious.” ―Gemma Files

“A tense, pulse-pounding adventure…. Ness Brown deftly steers this to a surprising - and all-too-human - conclusion, wresting a glimmer of hope out of the
Calypso crew's despair” ―Ada Hoffmann, Philip K. Dick Award finalist, author of the Outside series

“Tense, gory, and genuinely creepy…. Brown handles the astronomy and exobiology equally as competently as the interpersonal dynamics and trauma. The result is a sci-fi horror mash-up that holds its own with the classics of the genre.” ―
Publishers Weekly

“Compulsively readable and packed with both creepiness and outright scares,
The Scourge Between Stars is a stellar, perfectly-formed piece of space horror: a smart blend of Alien-esque monsters with the generation-ship existential despair of Aniara.” ―Ally Wilkes, author of All the White Spaces

“This is everything I love in dark sf horror: a massive generation ship traversing the black ocean of space; a smart, embattled protagonist struggling to keep both crew and ship alive; and a monstrous, alien presence growing in the shadowy spaces between, ready to burst forth and consume them all…
The Scourge Between Stars is an intense and exhilarating read.” ―Livia Llewellyn, author of Furnace

Wow, this was a nail biting ride from start to finish. The perfect mix of sci-fi and horror. I would love to see a follow-up to this novella, especially after that ending. The story and action was so tense. I really have no complaints, apart from there being little character development, which is understandable due to the shorter length of the story. Ness Brown essentially sacrificed depth for plot. There were so many aspects of this novella that I would have loved to explore more. Overall, this is a great story to read in one sitting and it will make you want to watch the movie Alien after.

This scared the unholy fluffy bunnies out of me. I love scifi horror in all mediums and this was a thrilling scare fest.

After reading Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes last year, I've been on the lookout for more space horror books. This popped up in my Instagram feed a bunch of times with good reviews, so I bumped it to the top of my tbr.

It was... fine. There were some definite creepy moments (especially with the android, Watson), but the plot felt a little too familiar, and I kept putting it down and picking it back up.

That said, it was a strong debut, and I would love to read more from Ness Brown in the future!

I didn’t feel right giving this 3 stars although it wasn’t my favorite because it did what it set out to do in a short time and it was more fun to read than some in its category double and triple in length

The book was decent, I gave it five stars because the writing was good. The story was decent lacking a lot in build up department. The characters were not extremely likable, and you felt nothing when they died. Overall it wasn't a bad short read but definitely not my cup of tea.

Don’t ask me about anything between pages 88-104 because I have zero idea what happened (as the pages weren’t in my copy) but i can tell you all about pages 105-136 (because they are in the book twice)!

That aside, this story was so incredible! Fast paced, easy to read, and so much fun! I would highly recommend it, just make sure your copy has all the pages! hahahaha

I wait year after year to find the few well-written and science-based sci-fi, to feel the tiny hairs rising on the back of my neck in suspense, to immerse myself in richly drawn characters, and to connect to heart-aching drama - this novel has it all. Thank you, Ness!

The elements of horror and the stakes are definitely there, but I honestly wanted more thrills. I expected to feel anxious and somewhat nervous while reading this but those feelings were nowhere to be found. I also wished there was more character development. The main character, Jacklyn, has interesting familial dynamics and I wanted a deeper exploration of her complex feelings regarding her family.

In my opinion, in terms of sci-fi, I feel that this genre thrives when given the space to develop an intricate story with complex concepts and immersive world-building. Since this book is a novella, we only get a glimpse of its potential to fulfill these notions.

This story is a fast-paced, one-sitting read, that’s perfect for people who aren’t familiar with the sci-fi genre and want to dip their toes into this realm. 3⭐️

With a novella relying on tension and the risk of losing characters you are attached to, the writer failed to make me want to care about them. So the tension failed to grab me.

It felt like a watered down version of Aliens with underdeveloped characters stuck in a plot that had no substance.

I really wanted to like this, but the book felt rushed, and shallow.

This book was written in a month, and it kind of shows. I really enjoyed it and finished it in a single day, and liked the world/characters/plot. However, the ending felt a bit rushed and underdeveloped.
