- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2016A stunning alliterative poem--most beautiful. Erkenwald (Bishop of London) finds the body of a virtuous but unbaptized pagan king --unable to die until he is baptized. He tells his story to Erkenwald who is so moved that he begins to cry. His tears fall on the body and the king is now baptized. He dies and his soul departs for heaven. The poem was thought to have been written by the author of Sir Gawain And the Green Knight, Pearl, Cleanness and Patience. I am told that is no longer the opinion of scholars. The dialect (North West Midlands) is quite difficult and annotations or a Middle English Dictionary are necessary but it is worth the effort.
