What would you do if you woke up and found yourself in a parallel universe under an alien sky? This is the question Zax Delatree must answer every time he closes his eyes.

Every time Zax Delatree falls asleep, he travels to a new reality. He has no control over his destination and never knows what he will see when he opens his eyes. Sometimes he wakes up in technological utopias, and other times in the bombed-out ruins of collapsed civilizations. All he has to live by are his wits and the small aides he has picked up along the way - technological advantages from techno-utopias, sedatives to escape dangerous worlds, and stimulants to extend his stay in pleasant ones.

Thankfully, Zax isn't always alone. He can take people with him, if they're unconscious in his arms when he falls asleep. But someone unwelcome is on his tail, and they are after something that Zax cannot spare - the blood running through his veins, the power to travel through worlds...

Wow!!

Wow!!
This book blew my mind. Zax feels like a real person to me. Minna is such a beautiful being that I wish I could meet her in real life lol and vicky is amazing too. I hated the Lextor with all my being and thats how I knew this book had me 100% invested. Tim Pratt has now become my favorite author just by reading this one book and that has never happened to me before. I highly recommend this book

Great world building. To keep having fresh new ideas with each world was amazing. Character building was great as well. So refreshing to read such a good book!!

One of the most creative stories I have read in some time. Tim Pratt doesn’t just create one world but hundreds of them, with our hapless hero Zax sometimes barely able to get a glimpse before being forced to move on. The good guys in this story are brave and selfless while the bad guys are moustache-twirling villains, but that’s not a complaint -it all works great, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. There’s not a single slow moment in this frantic gallop across the multi-verse. Thoroughly fascinating and enjoyable. A sequel please, Mr Pratt?

Science fiction is definitely not my fav genre, but sometimes i enjoy trying somerhing new .
So, this short book is about a guy, Zax, that everytime he sleeps he would wake up in a different world.
I would love to read more about these worlds ( very few descriptions of these worlds and very few adventures in each one ), but the story concentrates more on Zax being chased by " the Lector" an old aquitance of Zax, which in the past was doing some tests on Zax strange travel.
Now , basically the story is about " the Lector" chasing Zax, because he wants to be able to travel just like him. For some dark purposes.
It's not a bad story at all, but not a book that would stuck with me for a long time.

Tim Pratt is a genius. This book is an amazing feat, incredibly original, imaginative like very few others, bold and exciting. I loved every single page of this story.

I can't help wondering why the book just isn't about Minna? Zax is one of those classic bumbling male protagonists that are surrounded by cooler, more competent female characters that, somehow, inexplicably, are not themselves the main character. And it's not like Tim Pratt, of all people, can't write a badass lady protagonist! It's kinda his thing!

Still, a good time, and I'm looking forward to the next one, where (spoilers) Zax will no doubt be overshadowed by one more amazing woman who deserves her own story, but still play second (third? Fourth?) fiddle to the "hero" who mostly feels sorry for himself and gets rescued by awesome ladies. Tenchi Muyo much? =P

I completely loved this book - the protagonist is deeply humane, the various worlds were fascinatingly strange, and at the end I was very pleased to see that it has at least one sequel coming up.

This was an excellent book. The only small quibble I had was the amount of time it took our hero to reach certain obvious conclusions. But buy the book. Pay full price you will not regret it

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read, highly recommended

Big fan of Tim's Axiom trilogy and he hasn't disappointed here. Great read with engaging characters, one of them is a bit Macguffin'ish but it made sense in context and didn't hurt the story at all. Well recommended.

To be fair, its only about 200 pages but the book is an absolute page turner.
Not one page that bores or leaves you not wondering about endless possibilities of the multiverse.

The book itself was dented in the packaging a bit, but that's not the book's fault. The story is interesting. Reminds me of a Quantum Leap episode mixed with some Doctor Who

Really enjoyed it, could have been much longer with some exploration of the worlds. Needs another 100-150 pages. Hope there's a sequel!

Nothing really stands out for me after reading this book. I ordered it because the premise sounded rather interesting. The story itself, along with the shallow character development made for a monotonous and repetitive read. A younger audience may appreciate the whimsical collection of universes that were contained in the book.
