Editorial Reviews
Review
"Park's homage to creativity underscores how handy unlikely items can be; Preen ties the tablecloth to gather the crayons, which the quails then ferry to the ship, for example. Ohi's brightly hued digital illustrations combine hyperrealistic crayons (resembling photographs) with less vibrant cartoon art that seems to be drawn with crayons. A clever nod to imagination and ingenuity." - Booklist

- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2020Such a cute story with a great message! The illustration as amazing!!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2020Gurple and Preen sends readers on a creative, cosmic adventure! I have been following Deb Ridpath Ohi’s broken crayon art for several years. When I found out she was making a picture book and Linda Sue Park was the writer, I knew I had to get my hands on it as soon as possible!
Gurple and Preen crash their ship. While Gurple is in a panic and worried about their fate, Preen gets to work trying to work on fixing the ship which is now spilling with crayons. Sounds like a typical fix it story?! Well this is where the artistic talent of both women happen. Linda has written much dialogue using robotic made up lingo which you figure out and enjoy. And then using the breaking crayons technique, they begin to break them see what will be once broken, and with each new crayon comes something, panda, skateboard, puzzle pieces, and much more. When this part happened I felt like magic was pouring out of the page. I was eager to see how Gurple and Preen would use each new creation. With Preens go-getter attitude and Gurple’s more frustrated approach, we see how they figure out how to get them back to a working ship. Readers- I’m not going to tell you too much, trust me this is a lot of fun. A book you can read again and again and pick up on new things!
We received an advance copy for an honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2020I adore Debbi Ohi and her art, and one of her taglines is “You never know what will come out of a broken crayon.” (I highly recommend her Flickr page for more brilliant examples!) So, I just loved seeing his concept turned into a whole book! Linda Sue Park did a great job coming up with a story to make the random crayon drawings come together as a story-- I would love reading this with a little one and asking them to anticipate what you could do with each of the items that comes out of the crayons!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2020My 5 year old is in love with Gurple and Preen and really enjoys studying the illustrations. Great book!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2020There is certainly a lot going on in this adventure story. From the spaceship to the robots to the surprise inside the crayons, this book is chock full of imagination. This book would be good for readers beyond simple picture books, ready for something a little more challenging. Some advanced words like "bytes", "quails", and "fuming" may get kids inquisitive. The illustrations are bright and colorful and presented in three forms (I think). Realistic for the crayons, cartoonish for the robots and almost sketch like for the crayons surprise. Be prepared to have your imaginations activated. I think kids will read this over and over, and discover something new each time.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2020A whimsical cosmic adventure where an ordinary box of crayons become something extraordinary thanks to this creative author and illustrator team. Ohi has elevated broken crayons to an art form and continues that here in this fanciful tale of creativity and learning that you can accomplish difficult things by working on them one step at a time.
A good lesson for young and old alike.
