About the author
Originally born in Essex, Jo was predominantly raised in the West Country, enjoying a childhood in Devon and Cornwall, never far from a rugged coastline, sandy beach, or harbour.
Jo currently lives in Kent, with her two (occasionally stroppy) teenage daughters, her extremely long suffering husband and her two writing partners Max (who features as Brock in the series) and Merlin, both rescue Border Collie’s.
Jo’s debut set of novels are the Castleby series, set in a coastal community and largely inspired by the plethora of time spent in and around the UK’s coastline, and the never ending visits to RNLI shops that her children insisted on with a regularity. The series seemed a natural progression and the fictional seaside town of Castleby grew with new people and new plotlines.
The first debut novel in the Castleby series was SEA STATE, followed by the second in the series, Sea Change.
Jo is planning a new series set in the Scottish highlands, the first of which will hopefully be published in 2023, as well as a summer thriller for 2023 and a few standalone novels.
In what little spare time Jo has, she spends writing, walking by the ocean, walking the dogs, being an armchair movie critic, and drinking copious amounts of wine in her most favourite pub with friends.

It would be so easy for characters to get lost in a story with such a complicated plot. But J.M. Simpson has choreographed this story to perfection. With each book she releases, it only gets better.
We meet several new characters in this book and catch up with a few we have already met. I love that Steve led this one; he is such a great character.
I liked Seb and Tabatha, and I look forward to their story arc growing as the series continues. I loved Suzy and her dog grooming slash dog rescue. She was just fantastic.
I love that drama, humor, danger, heartbreak, loss, trauma, and healing are featured in this series. The way these heavy topics are handled is beautiful, and Simpson has an absolute gift for creating a stunning story.
This book was much more land focused this time around, but I loved getting to spend time on other parts of this town. I love the detail that goes into each storyline and all character development.
This is such a well-done series, and each book is better than the last. I love how Simpson continues bringing new characters in while still maintaining the characters from before.
It is an incredible work of art. This series has everything a reader could want and then some. I am already anxiously awaiting the next release!

New characters are introduced in this book as old ones are developed further. A car crash, a death, an investigation - the mystery unfolds. The characters go about their day-to-day but in Castleby, something is always amiss, yet friendships are developed, love blossoms and wounds are healed.
I think what I like best about this series is the relationships between the characters. Their mental health struggles are realistic and evocative. The community itself is a character - so supportive and loving and so close - always looking out for each other. It’s a place I’d love to live. Without the murders and drug dealers of course. But even the ‘bad guys’ evoke empathy.
Simpson’s writing is pacy. The transitions between characters are fluid, their development progressive. The descriptive writing is transfixing - you feel as if you’re there, in Castleby. As I said, the characters are enjoyable and you can’t help but fall in love with them. They’re so human.
I highly recommend this series! It’s one of my favourite series. It has it all: crime, murder, drama and romance.
I was asked by the passenger next to me to describe the book and why I was enjoying it. Describing it was more difficult. A police procedural? Murder mystery crime? Life in a Welsh coastal town? Happy and unhappy families? Everyday stories of Lifeboatmen?
It is all of these, and thus I suppose the combination is what makes for good reading.
