Eco-architect Olivia Wells returns from her successful life in New York to the Cornish village of Penbartha intent on fulfilling her god-father’s bequest to expand and oversee a co-working community of eco and creative entrepreneurs in a converted railway building.

Opposition to her endeavours soon surfaces and it becomes clear that not everyone is committed to the cause. Then, the day after an unexpected argument with someone she considered a friend and ally, Olivia finds her murdered body.

The tight-knit Cornish community hampers police investigations and when the forensic evidence places Olivia firmly in the frame, she is persuaded to put her trust in an unlikely accomplice. Using their unique combination of skills, they work together to try to clear her name, but their sleuthing gets them caught up in a dark web of secrets and lies.

Will Olivia be able to find the killer before they make her their next target, or will this inheritance turn out to be the deadliest of all?

This book was fantastic.
It had so many ups and downs that it kept pulling me in.
I was so obsessed to see who did the murders that I would actually wake up in the the middle of the night to read it.
Can't wait for the next Olivia Wells mystery.

I enjoyed this book a great deal. It was bit of a slow start and it was clear early on who the killer was - but enjoyable all the same. I am looking forward to the next one.

New to me author - but I will be reading more of what she desires to create. Very believable characters and intelligent dialog. Good mystery and I’m hoping there are more in this engaging series.

The story is set in a small town in Cornwall and our main character, Olivia, and her late godparents are working to restore and protect an abandoned train depot and its associated buildings into new businesses and a co-working space. All the businesses are expected to have an eco-bend. How wonderful! Very sustainability minded. I loved it. The author's descriptions were beautiful, especially of the creek and the walks along the sea. Unfortunately, someone is killed that Olivia had a public argument with and she's the main suspect. I had my suspicions about the killer and was very satisfied with the ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ruth Reads : A great story

I can definitely say this is one of the best books I’ve read in a while. The story telling is excellent with evocative descriptions of Cornwall. I loved the cast of characters especially Jago and Rocky. The author is great at all the little details that make you understand the characters and their motives so well. I had no idea who the murderer was and was gripped right until the end. So many plot twists kept me hooked and I really didn’t want it to end. I’m looking forward to reading the next in the series. I would highly recommend this novel. A great read!

Great read! Jane captures the real Cornwall and makes one want to visit Penbartha. I couldn’t put the book down, even after the murderer is revealed the tension builds.

I can’t wait for the next one, hope it’s well on the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cosy mystery, full of suspense

What an amazing debut novel! Perfect for fans of cosy mysteries, full of suspense. The novel is beautifully written, and really pulls you into the story and the setting. I love when stories make you think, and the environmental and ecology themes in the novel have me thinking about sustainability in my own business. While cosy mysteries are often unchallenging but fun fluff, McParkes’ novel balances the light and the dark and the result is a wonderfully enjoyable debut. Can’t wait to see what Olivia gets up to next!

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality cosy crime

Jane McParkes debut novel reads very well and many could be excused for thinking she’s a long established author.

The story follows protagonist Olivia and her pull between her heritage in Cornwall and her existing life in America. With beautiful Cornish scenery as the backdrop, which is exquisitely described, threat and well placed bombs of suspense keep the story flowing.

A great debut and I am looking forward to the next book.
