Rebels Abroad Tankobon Hardcover – October 23, 2022

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 7 ratings

This is a tale of two men—Thomas McDonnell, master carpenter and stonemason; and Harold Marston Fitch, heir to the title Viscount of Dermont in the County of Meath—“rebels abroad” who take radically different paths on two different continents. Both are strong-willed men separated by class, politics and religion—inextricably linked by Brigid, Thomas’s fifteen-year-old daughter, Harold’s secret lover. In 1739-1740, Ireland is stricken by a severe cold wave known to history as the “The Great Frost.” Evicted from their cottage, Thomas and Brigid seek lodgings in Dublin. As famine and riots rage, the McDonnells embark on a voyage to the American colony of Maryland. The Atlantic crossing is dangerous, complicated by war with Spain and the onset of hurricane season. Tragedy and hardship beset the family, forcing Thomas to become an indentured servant. He must adjust to his new life on a Maryland tobacco plantation, living among slaves and observing the institution of slavery close up. Harold’s drinking and debauchery lead to expulsion from Dermont Manor and enlistment in the Inniskilling Dragoons, an adventure that weaponizes his already-frightening tendencies. From daring anti-smuggling raids on the Lincolnshire coast to the wild underworld of Georgian London, and finally to the battlefields of the Holy Roman Empire, Harold ascends in rank and becomes a top-rate soldier. At the same time he descends gradually into the world of the psychopath. A true narcissist, con-artist, liar and manipulator, Harold grows more sinister. Driven by impulsivity, feelings of entitlement and superiority, promiscuity and other forms of self-gratification, he seizes upon opportunities which bring him even more success. But he is compelled to expose a dark family secret and to find those who betrayed him. Passion and violence collide in a drama of epic proportions.

Eddie Price grew up in western Kentucky and taught for 36 years as a history teacher and college instructor. "Widder's Landing" is set along the Ohio River in 1811-1815 and portrays life in those rapidly changing times. It also examines Kentucky's vital contribution to the War of 1812. To make his historical novel authentic, he traveled to the places in the novel, fired and serviced black powder rifles, plowed with mules, worked in pioneer villages, cooked with fireplace utensils, and interviewed hundreds of park rangers, re-enactors and historians--and spent countless hours researching in libraries and archives.

After retiring from teaching, Price hit the trail with "Widder's Landing," and has met thousands of interesting people along the way. He is equally at home speaking to grade school, middle school, high school, college and university classes as he is with senior citizens, historical societies, DAR, SAR, Daughters of 1812, and Society of 1812 groups. He is now a Kentucky Humanities Council Speakers Bureau presenter and can be found in numerous locations in Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida, New York, Canada and beyond. He presents in authentic costume and brings along period music to accompany an educational powerpoint program that involves the audience. Price also presents a program for writers that focuses on the marketing process. See all of his programs at his website:

As always, Eddie's books make you feel like you're there in Ireland, traveling by ship, or the East coast of the Americas. It makes for sleepless nights as you think to yourself, one more chapter. The characters draw you in to the book every chapter. Also, very educational about Ireland and the persecution of so mamy

Captivating from the start, I couldn’t put it down. Eddie Price has done it again with “Rebels Abroad”… Bringing the readers into the drama and creating a story that is interesting, educational, exciting and described in a way that you can feel the cold, smell the gunpowder and delight in the victories! Yes it’s long but I didn’t want it to end!!!

I bought this book on 10/22 and started reading it immediately. This book is not a skim through book that I'm used to reading. Each chapter draws you farther and farther into to lives of Thomas and Harold. The amount of history is just crazy. If you didn't already like history before reading this book, you would by the end. The imagery described makes you feel as if you are there in the book too.
