Dreamers Hardcover – Picture Book, September 4, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
Yuyi Morales brought her hopes, her passion, her strength, and her stories with her, when she came to the United States in 1994 with her infant son. She left behind nearly everything she owned, but she didn't come empty-handed.
Dreamers is a celebration of making your home with the things you always carry: your resilience, your dreams, your hopes and history. It's the story of finding your way in a new place, of navigating an unfamiliar world and finding the best parts of it. In dark times, it's a promise that you can make better tomorrows.
This lovingly-illustrated picture book memoir looks at the myriad gifts migrantes bring with them when they leave their homes. It's a story about family. And it's a story to remind us that we are all dreamers, bringing our own strengths wherever we roam. Beautiful and powerful at any time but given particular urgency as the status of our own Dreamers becomes uncertain, this is a story that is both topical and timeless.
The lyrical text is complemented by sumptuously detailed illustrations, rich in symbolism. Also included are a brief autobiographical essay about Yuyi's own experience, a list of books that inspired her (and still do), and a description of the beautiful images, textures, and mementos she used to create this book.
A parallel Spanish-language edition, Soñadores, is also available.

Editorial Reviews
Review
★ "An immigrant's tale steeped in hope, dreams, and love. . . . Details in the art provide cultural markers specific to the U.S., but the story ultimately belongs to one immigrant mother and her son. Thanks to books and stories (some of her favorites are appended), the pair find their voices as 'soñadores of the world.' A resplendent masterpiece."—Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review
★ "The narrative text is poetic and full of emotion. . . . the mixed-media illustrations are breathtaking, created through painting, drawing, photography, and embroidery. The joyous imagination and intricacy of each illustration will make readers of all ages explore them further. . . . "—Booklist, Starred Review
"Dreamers is a paean to libraries, to reading and writing and creativity, a value statement I endorse wholeheartedly. Dreamers aims for the glorious and the poetic; it's big, passionate, crammed with detail."—The New York Times Book Review
★ "The magical art marries the succinct and powerful narrative in a resplendent celebration of literacy, language, and the transformative power of the picture book form . . . This excellent memoir encapsulates the fears, hopes, and dreams that come along with immigrating to a new place . . . A timely and much-needed selection."—School Library Journal, Starred Review
★ "Every page of Dreamers vibrates with energy, depicting the emotions, the turmoil, the stress and the joy that come with creating a new life."—Shelf Awareness, Starred Review
★ "The gently hopeful text offers its best optimism when rooted in Morales’ own experience. The immersive magical reality of the art is the real glory here; the mixed-media illustrations, including acrylic paint, drawing, and bits of collage, are full-bleed spreads that depict the library as a milieu every bit as startling and novel to the speaker as the U.S. itself."—The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, Starred Review
★ "A wise book and, to praise it in its own words, 'resplendent,' an eloquent vision of the 'resilience' and 'hope' of the 'dreamers, soñadores of the world.'"—The Horn Book Magazine, Starred Review
"Morales tells, through illustrations that seem to dance and sing, the story of crossing borders on a bridge of language with her young son. Together they discover picture books and public libraries, and the gifts they brought with them — open hearts, art, poetry and stories — blossom."—The Washington Post, Best Books of 2018

About the author
Born in Mexico and raised among giant grandmothers, mossy house walls, and rampaging feral gardens, Yuyi Morales fostered a strong bond with the magical stories that ran in her family. Since having immigrated to the USA in 1994, she has drawn from her family's legacy and her heritage to create some of the most celebrated Latino works for children's books.
Yuyi is the 2004 winner of the Pura Belpre Medal for Illustration for her book Just a Minute: A Trickster Tale and Counting Book as well as the 2008 winner for Los Gatos Black on Halloween (written by Marissa Montes), given to a Latino illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.
.
Her book Harvesting Hope; The story of Cesar Chavez (written by Kathell Krull), was the recipient of the Christopher Award and the Jane Adams Award, and was deemed one of the best books of 2003 by Child Magazine, San Francisco Chronicle, and School Library Journal.
Yuyi is also the creator of ALA notable book, Little Night, co-released in Spanish as Nochecita, and winner of the 2008 SCBWI Golden Kite Medal.
Some of other recognitions her work has received include the Americas Award, the California book Award, and the Tomas Rivera Award won in 2004 and 2008.
Asked about her work Yuyi says, "I strive to capture the incredible beauty of the every day forms using textures and colors as another way to reveal the heart of the story. I also pursue glow and luminosity with resolve. If I could ask for a talent, it would be to become a color genius."

- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2024I love this book! It brings representation to the classroom! I also love the illustrations and the meaning behind them! Every child should have access to these type of books, so they develop empathy and understanding of other people's journeys!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2018What an inspirational, happy book! Although the recommended ages are 4-8, all elementary school kids will enjoy this. This is both for any immigrant who has felt bewildered upon entering the United States, and parents and teachers who want to convey a hint of what it’s like to come to a strange culture and not speak the language. Plus, it's a natural for anyone wanting to pass on their love of books. The experience is tough, but ultimately heartwarming.
It’s a story told by a loving mother to her small child. In the U.S., so much to learn, to see, to experience; it boggles the mind. Author/artist Morales conveys the confusion with her eloquent, lively pictures that kids will delight in. She shows a dry humor when she minimizes some experiences in her narration, but the pictures tell the real tale. Then she discovers a library and finds out she and her son can borrow books. As she reads to her son, her thoughts float in the air - wild and ecstatic. Morales wants to share her love of books and many kids will absorb this like sponges to water.
Most of all, she embodies the warm and brave spirit that so many immigrants bring to the U.S. Teachers, parents, if you want your kids to take comfort that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and to know that books will help them to get there, this one’s for you.
Morales includes a list of books that inspired her (for all ages) and her personal story at the end of the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2018This is such a beautiful and personal story of the author’s immigration to the U.S. It is told with short and elegant prose, and beautiful, detailed artwork on each page. It is also a story about the power of books. Yuyi’s introduction to a library and the reasons she eventually becomes an author herself. I will be using this book in my fourth grade class to open the discussion on immigration during our immigration unit, and also to focus on literacy and the importance of books. There are many areas of discussion to be found from this book. You can even discuss the illustrations because they are so detailed. I also appreciated the author adding pages at the end that tell her immigration story in more detail, share a list of books that inspired her, and how she made this book. A beautiful picture book about the American dream and a tribute to the art of picture books.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2023The first time I read this book, I honestly didn't get it. The artwork is impressive, but the words are sparse. After reading "The Last Cuentista," in which this book plays a fairly prominent role, I went back and reread this. There is so much symbolism on each page that this book is appropriate for a wide range of ages. Younger children might take everything at face value as a straightforward immigration story. Older children and adults can analyze the meaning of the symbols.
Overall, a beautiful book worth the investment. And don't forget to have children look for the monarchs on every page!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2024The story and images are truly beautiful! I would highly recommend buying for children or anyone who loves art.

This beautiful true story brought tears to my eyes. When a Foreigner come to the states regardless of their place of origin. Sometimes thell face loneliness, confusion with the language or the way of doing things. And the Author explains her struggles tenderly so the children can understand and perhaps be more Sympathetic towards others.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2018This is a GORGEOUS book! I could look at the illustrations and read the words for hours. Yuyi Morales is an author, illustrator, and ARTIST. She painted, photographed, used drawings from her childhood, and MUCH more. I’ve not read, but I plan on reading all her books. I just put holds on all her work at my library! “Dreamers” is basically Yuyi’s personal story which began in 1994.
Here’s a super quick summary. Mother and son immigrate to the United States. They don’t speak English. They are afraid and disoriented in their new home, and then…They find the public library and find rest for their weary souls.
Here’s just a taste…
“Books became our language. Books became our home. Books became our lives. We learned to read, to speak, to write, and to make our voices heard.”
This is a picture book we should all read, young and old. The message is a beautiful one of love, hope, trust, determination, acceptance, and gratitude. This book should win a Caldecott Medal. Oh, and shhhhh…ALL our grandchildren will be receiving it this Christmas!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2021After reading, Esperanza Rising, by Pam Munoz Ryan, I asked one of my immigrant students to read Dreamers to the class. The students were excited for their classmate to display her ever improving reading skills. The words and beautiful imagines of Dreamers helped the class compare and contrast immigrant experiences as well as savor their experiences at public libraries. The book allows students to make personal connections with the story as well as express appreciation for the rich narrative shared Yuyi Morales. Dreamers is a beautiful book with an exceptional author connection at the end of the book. As a teacher, there are tons of extension lessons I can do year after year, including figurative language activities, identifying compare and contrast ideas, and creating books of self discovery and blossoming resilience.

3.0 out of 5 stars Esperaba mucho más. :-(

5.0 out of 5 stars Lusciously gorgeous and important book
At a time when immigrants are reviled and libraries are under threat, this is such an important book. Spectacularly illustrated, it tells the author's own tale of arriving in the US from Mexico and just how disconcerting and lonely it was - how many mistakes they made. Once found, the library is the source of escape and education. Something for us all to remember as the "why don't they just learn English and fit in" rhetoric wails across the public domain - if you want people to learn, you need to nurture your libraries. A lovely book.
