From critically acclaimed journalist Valerie Boyd comes an eloquent profile of one of the most intriguing cultural figures of the twentieth century—Zora Neale Hurston.

A woman of enormous talent and remarkable drive, Zora Neale Hurston published seven books, many short stories, and several articles and plays over a career that spanned more than thirty years. Today, nearly every black woman writer of significance—including Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, and Alice Walker—acknowledges Hurston as a literary foremother, and her 1937 masterpiece
Their Eyes Were Watching God has become a crucial part of the modern literary canon.

Wrapped in Rainbows, the first biography of Zora Neale Hurston in more than twenty-five years, illuminates the adventures, complexities, and sorrows of an extraordinary life. Acclaimed journalist Valerie Boyd delves into Hurston’s history—her youth in the country’s first incorporated all-black town, her friendships with luminaries such as Langston Hughes, her sexuality and short-lived marriages, and her mysterious relationship with vodou. With the Harlem Renaissance, the Great Depression, and World War II as historical backdrops, Wrapped in Rainbows not only positions Hurston’s work in her time but also offers riveting implications for our own.

The Boston Globe An elegant and exhilarating biography.

The Philadelphia Inquirer Boyd paints a stunning portrait...in prose dazzlingly powerful, intellectually rigorous, and passionately poignant.

O, The Oprah Magazine Hugely satisfying....With loving regard and agile scholarship, Boyd fills the gaps in Hurston's exhilarating life.

Edwidge Danticat author of
Breath, Eyes, Memory This biography is gorgeous, epic, larger than life, and like Ms. Hurston's own work is a momentous treasure, not to be missed.

It’s a lovely book. Biography that shines a lovely light on a controversial figure. The photographs are stunning and make the book more than biography but a work of art, hagiography, an ode to a magnificent personality. It’s a fine rendition of a complicated and definitely pro Black woman, a piercing intellect, and possibly a most charming trickster. Boyd ushers Hurston to her seat in a cathedral of light ‘wrapped in rainbows’ to sit alongside all the great artists of the 20 th century and not in the negro section either ! but rather, laughing out loud, I imagine, on the front row between Frida Khalo and Billie Holiday cracking wise. Well done my friend, well done - you left us too soon.

I am a huuuuuuge fan of Queen Zora and this book was all that I hoped it would be and more. Boyd's research was impeccably done. Her writings is superb and easy to follow. Thank you, Valerie Boyd, for writing this biography. Zora chose well.

Firstly, this book is very hefty and quite a dense read--meaning to say, if you aren't one who likes to be railed with information, albeit stylishly and lucidly explained, then this book will be dry and unnecessarily taxing.

Personally, I love Boyd's writing voice. It has a certain tenderness about it--everything about the manner in which Boyd wrote drips with respect and care for the material. That means to say, the book is far from boring. In fact, it's epic and grand--an adventure through a wonderful woman's life that is as human as it is metaphysical.

I'd recommend it to young writers, woman, everyone--especially people who's dreams seem larger than reality allots for them.

My only concern would be Boyd's vociferous vocabulary which can elucidate or obfuscate--depending on how versed you are in college level writings...

Zora is Best,

If you've never read Ms. Hurston's work...and know very little about her...then read this book...she comes through the pages of Ms. Boyd's work as though she was speaking directly to you. This biography reads more like a novel...but with truths that only Zora could tell...you can walk in her shoes...hear her voice...listen as she expresses her pain...and feel her agony...her joys...her growth...this is such a valuable addition to all of the work previously done on Ms. Zora Neal Hurston. I've read it several times...and each time I learn more about Zora's life, and those other great writers of the Harlem Renaissance...who were her friends and foes.

One of the most interesting but, to say the least, under-appreciated writers/personalities of the 20th Century.

Amazing book about an amazing woman. Valerie Boyd writes Zora Neale Hurston’s story like a novel. It’s inspiring and a book you don’t want to put down.

This book draws you into its nonfiction narrative and you begin to feel like Zora Neale Hurston's best friend...or sister. It is very thorough in terms of her personal and academic history but moves along smartly. Ms. Boyd provides plentiful insights into Ms. Hurston's behavior. This is a solid, fascinating peek into the heart, mind and soul of an artist.anthropologist who changed forever the landscape of 20th century African-American literature. Kudos to Ms. Boyd for a well-researched representation of Ms. Hurston's life and accomplishments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very accurate biography

I haven't finished reading it yet but I am enjoying this book very much. It's accurate, full of all the details of Zora's life, both as an artist and as a human being... there's one thing missing, though: why doesn't Boyd mention the episode in the barber shop? When Zora said it was fair to throw out the black customer? Hope she will later in the book...
