Meg, a widow and recent empty-nester who is haunted by her past.
Mara, a woman who has experienced a lifetime of rejection and is now trying to navigate a difficult marriage.
Charissa, a hard-working graduate student who wants to get things right.
You're invited to join these four women as they reluctantly arrive at a retreat center and find themselves drawn out of their separate stories of isolation and struggle and into a collective journey of spiritual practice, mutual support and personal revelation.
Along the way, readers will be taken into a new understanding of key spiritual practices and find tangible support for the deeper life with God.

Review
"If you're a spiritually inclined person, I think you'll really love it. It's about four women, every one of them coming from a different place spiritually. But all of them in need of a fresh cup of mercy. . . . So it's terrific. I highly recommend it." -- Kathie Lee Gifford, NBC's Today, March 11, 2013
"I have been on retreats with [these characters] and I am one of them. Their neediness, arrogance, cluelessness, perfectionism, self-pity, codependence . . . are mine. By the end of the book I was grateful for author Sharon Garlough Brown's fresh eyes and voice. She not only gave me resharpened tools for my journey with Jesus but also reminded me that I need fellow pilgrims to love me and keep me honest along the way." -- Sybil MacBeth, author of Praying in Color
"Sharon Garlough Brown introduces us to four engaging women who are wrestling with their . . . view of God. Strap on your best traveling shoes--following their journey in Sensible Shoes is not for the faint of heart!" -- Melinda Correa Schmidt, Midday Connection
"This work of fiction felt like my own personal story as I connected on a different level with each of the four women on a quest to grow in their faith. I loved it in a way I haven't loved a book in a long time. It's filled with relatable narrative and examples of key spiritual practices that deepened my faith. I found in it a compassion for myself and for others who are walking alongside me. I cannot wait to read the other books in the series." -- Elizabeth Murphy, Just Between Us, Winter 2016
"As a reader, I was captivated by this story and its characters. Once begun, it was hard to put down. As a long-time spiritual director and retreat leader, I found the stories of spiritual transformation to be true to what I have seen with my directees and on retreats. I have suggested it to many as a glimpse into the contemplative life and what it may have to offer them." -- Rev. Jim Gaderlund, spiritual director and retreat leader
"Sharon Garlough Brown's book Sensible Shoes provides an accessible message about the power of spiritual practices in our lives. As a spiritual director, I highly recommended this book to anyone who is seeking a deeper connection with God." -- Patti Harrison, spiritual director, Detroit, Michigan
"There are books that offer a can't-put-it-down reading experience and books that offer truths so resonant that I am compelled to stop reading and ponder awhile. Sensible Shoes is both. Its characters have become spiritual companions for my journey." -- Doreen Olson, executive minister of Christian formation, The Evangelical Covenant Church
"A book of four spiritual journeys that we can all relate to. Filled with spiritual insight, truth, beauty and discovery―not to mention deft and beautiful prose. A story to open eyes, to comfort and remind us of the importance of relationship." -- Tosca Lee, New York Times bestselling author of Havah: The Story of Eve
"Sharon Brown's story provides a way for readers to vicariously dip into deep spiritual practices through the realistic struggles and joys of four women. Through emotionally resonant characters, Sensible Shoes encourages us to communicate with God in new ways, broadening our spiritual journey one step at a time." -- Jana Riess, author of Flunking Sainthood

It was so good that I couldn’t set it down.
The thing about Sensible Shoes is that it’s about a group of four women who are doing a long retreat and Brown’s writing style enables the reader to go on the retreat alongside the characters. This book is more than just a good novel, it’s a spiritual renewal—and for that, I think I would give the book 5 stars. But as a novel, it is also touching and helps reveal something intimate about the reader as the characters’ souls are being laid bare.
From a literature perspective, the story is well done. The writing is superb and the way in which the author switches between the character perspectives keeps you wanting to read more and find out what happens. I’ve already written on the blog about how I related to each character, so I won’t take up space writing about that now. I will say that each character is so real, so relatable that it makes it feel like a true story. I guarantee that you have met women just like Meg, Mara, Hannah, and Charissa. Reading this novel, you might well find yourself thinking of a friend who, like Meg, needs to learn her worth. Or, you might be reminded of a former classmate who, like Charissa, makes your blood boil when she is being superficial and judgmental. Each character has different struggles, different addictions that keep them from being in perfect communion with God. The story, then, is how each overcomes those obstacles and moves forward to be in better communion with God and with each other. Since that is the story of each of our own lives and spiritual journeys, I think that makes Sensible Shoes a hopeful read.
When the story reaches the bi-monthly meetings of the retreat group that the women belong to, there is a discussion in the story of a certain type of prayer. To help the reader in their own prayer life, Brown even includes a copy of the handout that the women receive from their retreat director in the story. I even borrowed from Brown in articles for my magazine. That’s how good these handouts are. With an M.Div. from Princeton and a job as pastor at an Evangelical church in Michigan, Brown is obviously an experienced retreat director in addition to being a great author—making me even more inclined to support her book. We ministers have to support each other.
I highly recommend this great work of fiction and hope that you will take the time to read it. I guarantee it will help you in your spiritual life.
I particularly enjoyed how Brown combines the heart journey and desire for intimacy with God with the telling of the ladies lives. It's a tremendous practical demonstration of how we can pursue the heart of God while going about our lives incorporating various spiritual disciplines plus the importance of community (ie, each other) and guidance from a mentor (in this story it was the leader of the retreat: Katherine).
The novel is filled with spiritual insight plus instructional guidelines as to how to incorporate various spiritual disciplines and provides a wonderful insight into a scared journey with the Lord.
I'm excited to read the next one in the series.
This book will make you think and make you feel and gives you an opportunity to read for leisure or read and stop along the way to participate in the exercise it offers.
This is the first book I have ever highlighted. Ever. I normally don’t like to highlight books (even text books all through college), but there were so many great bits of wisdom and quotable moments I wanted to remember that I would suggest you have your Bible highlighter (so they don’t bleed through) ready.
I will return to the highlighted parts over and over and I will remember this series forever. You can read the first book alone, or any of them alone if you wanted to, but I suggest the whole series. I ready this entire series over the summer. Everyone I have recommended it to has loved it. And one of my coworkers read the whole thing in a week (on vacation so she didn’t do the journey part and plans to read again). The second book is background story without tasks throughout. The last two books have less exercise or reflection questions, but still offer a little bit for the people that missed that in the second book.
I could write a novel about how much I loved this book and how the Holy Spirit used this book in ways I will never forget. I personally went through a lot while reading this series and this book was always right on time with the wisdom I needed.
This book is amazing. And although I am a Christian, I normally don’t read Christian fiction.
If you don’t want to learn more about faith and don’t want to hear about faith as a basis, then this book isn’t for you. I encourage anyone to read it regardless of your religion, but just know that this book isn’t preachy, but it is definitely faith based.

Don't let the words "spiritual direction" fool, intimidate, or turn you off, should you not be familiar or warm to this practice. Basically think: being real, finding 'safe people' to be open, true and your real self with, and encountering the massive beauty of grace -- the grace of the Gospel -- as the real self finally or fully opens up. And should you come from a church background that values objective doctrine over subjective experience, don't for a minute think that that will be sacrificed on the slippery slope of emotional truth or vulnerable openness. It won't.
In it's rightful place and way (remembering this book is neither a church service nor a seminary course) some of the strongest tenents of our Christian faith are upheld and exampled beautifully within these pages. Without an ounce of preachiness no less! You will be neither disappointed nor offended with what you find here, if you are at all open to God, to His amazing gospel, or to deep honesty within yourself.
Whether your own life (via characters you will almost certainly be able to identify with) resembles in some way the exceptionally well put together Charissa, the intimidated and hidden Meg, the broken and life-toughened Mara, the driven and productive Hannah, or not, you will undoubtedly find yourself becoming "good friends" with these characters or with those who mentor or direct them. And perhaps longing for a touch of the deep grace that they each are on the pathway to discovering.
If you like Ann Voskamp's vulnerability mixed with her deep pursuit of Christ (The Broken Way) or enjoyed Jan Karon's lovely Mitford village people, you will undoubtedly be thrilled with what you find here among this clan of unlikely friends who meet on a spiritual retreat. And then live their sad, pretentious, proud, or falsely contented lives out before us, to learn from. And possibly to heal alongside.
If I had my way, I'd be buying copies for every female friend and acquaintance I have, near and far. I'm scheming! They are that good. AND that important.
Sharon G. Brown writes with a deep understanding, a good mind, and a gifted pen. Simply WONDERFUL! And if you read and love the books as much as many other women (and a few men too) do, make sure you visit the author’s website or FB page (personal and author sites) as you’ll find opportunities to connect with her there. Having sat under a full week of her OUTSTANDING conference presentation this summer, I can assure you, you'll likely want to do the same!
