As a senior acquisitions editor for Fog Harbor Books in San Francisco, Ingrid Erikson has rejected many a manuscript for lack of defined conflict and dramatic irony--two elements her current life possesses in spades. In the months following the death of her childhood best friend and international bestselling author Cece Campbell, Ingrid has not only lost her ability to escape into fiction due to a rare trauma response, but she's also desperate to find the closure she is convinced will come with Cece's missing final manuscript.

After an editorial meeting jeopardizes Ingrid's career, she fears her future will remain irrevocably broken. But when Joel Campbell--who shattered her belief in happily-ever-afters--offers her a sealed envelope from Cece, his late cousin, asking them to put their differences aside and retrieve a package in their coastal Washington hometown, Ingrid must confront a past riddled with secrets before she can discover the true healing she's been searching for.

The acclaimed author of
Before I Called You Mine and All That Really Matters delivers a poignant and intriguing contemporary tale of friendship, forgiveness, and a love that goes beyond the page.

A heartbreaking, beautiful, Christian romance. A new favorite.
Dear Nicole,I read one of my favorite books this weekend thanks to you. Did you know that this story is the kind of story that speaks to my reader's soul? Not only did you master a second chance romance, but you painted grief in such a powerful, heartbreaking and beautiful way. I love how this story speaks to the goodness of God and how He turns such painful tragedy to good. And it's the journey that makes His glory shine.I have seen and heard your characters from the first few pages. The pain, suffering, the heartache, so beautifully written- I felt what they felt. The adventure Cece takes them on is absolutely lovely and I adored watching their hearts be mended. The friendship between Cece and Ingrid was completely relatable, as I don't have a sister by blood but a sister "of my heart." And both of us remind me of these two who love the written word. The Pacific Northwest setting is always on the top of my list to read. It's my home and I find myself longing to read books surrounded by rainy days, evergreens, mountains, and the water. You wove in a book lovers' heart in here as well. We love reading stories about readers and those who find home in a library.Joel and Ingrid's second chance at love was absolute perfection. As you can tell, second chance is one of my favorites. I like to think it is because of the redemption, hope and the idea that two people who have loved each other can find love again. I adore that man. Joel is THE hero I want to read about.Thank you Nicole for giving me a chance as a reader and for the #gifted copy. A new all time favorite added to my list. I can't wait to start your next story!Love,KiraXoxo*Romance- kissesChristian Contemporary Romance*TW- grief, loss of loved ones, alcoholism, family stress#thewordswelost#nicoledeese #bethanyhouse#christianromance #contemporaryromance #pacificnorthwest #redemption #christianbooks #secondchance #lovestories #newfavorite #fogharbor

It’s not every day that I read a book I consider a work of art. This book was a rich, vibrant, emotional work of art that resonated with me and tugged at my heart strings. I LOVED it.

@nicoledeeseauthor wove together a story of love, loss, grief and hope all into a beautiful book about Ingrid and her best friends Cece and Joel. After Cece dies unexpectedly, Ingrid pushes away from Joel and everything that reminds her of all she has lost. But after a missing part of Cece’s will is discovered, Ingrid is forced back home to Fog Harbor where she and Joel reconnect and relive some of their past. Cece was an author and used her gift of words to bring Joel and Ingrid back together and to give them hope. This story is full of twists, turns, slow reveals, and lots of bittersweet memories as they read their story through Cece’s eyes and search for a missing manuscript of the last book in her popular book series. This story is a journey and I loved every second of it!

One thing to note: this book does deal with some heavy topics like the death of a parent and death of a friend, an absent parent, alcoholism, and grief/loss. BUT the way Nicole handles these topics is with the utmost care and understanding. While I’ve not experienced the same hurts and traumas as the characters in this story, I have had times of feeling broken and like I would never “get over” something. Every detail included when discussing these hard topics felt real and relatable and the journey the story takes us through is gentle and brings healing.

Read if you like:
-small sea town setting
-boating
-second chance romance
-hope filled stories
-scavenger hunts
-beautiful analogies
-a book about books
-character growth and healing
-faith based fiction
-dual time lines

I could go on and on, but suffice to say I loved this book and I think you would too💙⚓️📖💧

The Words We Lost by Nicole Deese is an excellent story that made me feel all the feels. This was one of the hardest stories I’ve ever read in my whole life. Not because the storyline is tedious or boring. Not because the characters are flat and dull. None of that would ever be true with a Nicole Deese novel. In fact, in this story, Deese’s storyline grabs the reader from page one and refuses to let go until the very last page has been devoured. And her characters are impeccable, as per the norm. No, this book was the hardest read of my life because I am Ingrid, and I really, really did NOT want to wade through my grief. You see, I have tricks to get through my day. I pretend, if you will, that my big brother, my step-father, my best friend, and my dad aren’t dead. I pretend every single second of every single day that the last five years hasn’t wrecked me for all time and that my heart hasn’t been ripped out, stomped on, and broken into tiny pieces again and again and again and again. I had a hard time reading this book because it wouldn’t let me pretend. I couldn’t hide my grief and my heartbreak. Instead, this story forced me to look at my grief and heartbreak and admit that I am in deep pain…and probably need a little help. What I love the most about this story is the recognition that grief and loss change people permanently. That the loss of a loved one wounds a person so deeply there is no coming back. I also love how Ingrid comes to understand exactly what family means. That a best friendship can also be a real, true sisterhood. And how it transcends space and time. Just because Cece is gone from this place of existence (earth) doesn’t mean that Ingrid will never see her again and that their bond has been severed. If anything, time apart will make their bond of sisterhood grow even stronger. Even though this book was the hardest book I’ve ever read, it is also one of the most hopeful I’ve read. I am leaving this story changed for sure. I still hurt for my loved ones. I have massive, gaping holes in my heart. But I have the hope of seeing them again one day, and I look forward to that day very much.

The Words We Lost is, hands down, a 2023 #MustRead. This is not a book you want to miss. Be aware, though, that this is not a lighthearted, fluffy read. This story will sucker-punch your heart. So, make sure you have tissues by your side while you read. If you’ve already read this amazing story, then you know what I’m talking about!

I purchased a copy of this novel in eBook form from Amazon.com on April 11, 2023, in order to review. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Just read this book a second time before I dive into book 2 in the series (which has just been launched! I’m incredibly impressed with my own self-control! Delayed gratification, delayed gratification…) I remember LOVING this book the first time around, but it was every bit of amazing reading it the second time. Such a masterpiece in both the literary sense and also in the way it explores the theme of grief. One of my all time favorites.

Much like the author and main character, I had lost the ability to lose myself in fiction. It didn’t take many pages, despite re reading them several times, to find myself shedding tears and sinking into the story. If you have ever thought, as said in chapter two, that “grief has stolen something irreplaceable” from you, I encourage you to read this story and let yourself feel the grief along with that characters. You may just find some healing in these pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful story about living with grief

I loved to read this book and laughted and cried with the protagonists along their journey to healing. The story really touched my heart because it is written so relatable with grief in its different forms. It becomes evident that Nicole Deese not only tells from grief but knows how it really is to loose a sister.
