The book was first published in 1949 (six printings), revised a little in 1957 (twelve printings), enlarged in 1968 (ten printings) and reprinted in 2017. Robert King Merton's ideas and analysis are still salient. He's an extraordinary sociologist. That said, I and others, are now trying to move beyond his call for Sociological Theories of the Middle Range which we as a discipline have faithfully adhered to for the last 70 years. He was spot on for quite some time (30-40 years?) but the dominate focus on middle range theories is now debilitating and causing a painful neglect of high-level theory development and thus the general advancement of the field of sociology in general. Still and all we owe Merton a great debt.

Son a noble prize winner; if they gave one for sociology he'd have been a shoe in. Brilliant work!

A good book for anyone studying social theories.
