“If you’ve ever wondered why we keep secrets and what motivates us to spill them, look no further. Michael Slepian has spent the past decade studying the psychology of secrets, and is ready to reveal his findings to the world.”—Adam Grant, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Think Again

The Secret Life of Secrets gracefully blends engaging stories with compelling science.”—Sonja Lyubomirsky, University of California professor and author of The How of Happiness

Think of a secret that you’re keeping from others. It shouldn’t take long; behavioral scientist Michael Slepian finds that, on average, we are keeping as many as thirteen secrets at any given time. His research involving more than 50,000 participants from around the world shows that the most common secrets include lies we’ve told, ambitions, addictions, mental health challenges, hidden relationships, and financial struggles.

Our secrets can weigh heavily upon us. Yet the burden of secrecy, Slepian argues, rarely stems from the work it takes to keep a secret hidden. Rather, the weight of our secrets comes from carrying them alone, without the support of others. Whether we are motivated to protect our reputation, a relationship, a loved one’s feelings, or some personal or professional goal, one thing is clear: Holding back some part of our inner world is often lonely and isolating. But
The Secret Life of Secrets shows you that it doesn’t have to be.

Filled with fresh insight into one of the most universal—yet least understood—aspects of human behavior,
The Secret Life of Secrets sheds a fascinating new light on questions like: At what age do children develop the cognitive capacity for secrecy? Do all secrets come with the same mental load? How can we reconcile our secrets with our human desires to relate, connect, and be known? When should we confess our secrets? Who makes for the ideal confidant? And can keeping certain types of secrets actually enhance our well-being?

Drawing on over a decade of original research,
The Secret Life of Secrets reveals the surprising ways that secrets pervade our lives, and offers science-based strategies that make them easier to live with. The result is a rare window into the inner workings of our minds, our relationships, and our sense of who we are.

I really recommend this book! It had a lot of wonderful qualities that make a science book enjoyable and satisfying. It was fascinating to take a tour through the entire world of secrets research, while remaining a clear read that was just the right length. This is as far as I know, as a psychology researcher, the first comprehensive read on secrets research written by a foremost expert in the field.

From a self help perspective, for yourself and the people in your life, it was grounding and cathartic to understand how frequently people hold all kinds of secrets, and how we aren't alone in many of our experiences. You learn a lot about how to cope and manage secrets in your life and the life of those around you.

I just loved the writing - it was clear and eloquent, and walked you through the science with fun narrative, personal anecdotes, and stories that helped instill how the science on secrets relates to your own personal life and those around you.

Another easter egg of the book: it really taps into much of the science in psychology research, not only in how it's done (research methods), but distilling many other lessons about psychology that relate to secrets. You learn a good bit about topics such as human development, mental health and emotion, personality traits, stigma and stereotypes, cultural differences in how we think and behave.

Countless authors, playwrights, and psychologists have explored the universe of secrets and their profound role in our lives. Now, like a space telescope revealing the vast universe of stars normally hidden from us, The Secret Life of Secrets charts the universe of personal secrets, giving us a comprehensive view of what we keep secret from others and also how we can manage our secret lives in ways that promote well-being for ourselves and others. Michael Slepian goes about this task by combining the best in scientific psychology—including his extensive secrets research—with his personal quest to understand secrets in his life. The Secret Life of Secrets will bring your personal universe of secrets into clearer focus as it inspires you to experiment with new pathways for growth. This is an important book and one that will be of great value to all who read it.

This is a somewhat interesting discussion of research into the types of issues we do not disclose to others, and why. In the style pioneered by Malcolm Gladwell, the author blends psychological research results with semi-dramatic settings and characterizations in an effort to be more engaging and readable.

I had just two criticisms of the book. First, the author did not discuss the positive side of keeping secrets - that is, not disclosing information entrusted in you by someone else, when you agreed not to share that information. Second, I was very surprised that the author treated NSA ex-employee Edward Snowden, who disclosed national security secrets and then defected to Russia, as a figure of sympathy. Many Americans consider him a traitor rather than a hero.

I am so not a nonfiction person, but really enjoyed reading this one. I learned a ton, but it was written in a personal and engaging way do that was actually fun to read. It almost had a self-help quality to it in that it is impossible to not think about how the author’s findings relate to your own life—and thinking about how you could have handled your own secrets differently—but seems a lot more scientifically grounded than my impression of the typical self help book. It flew by and was a really fun read. How often do we get to read about thousands of secrets?

I've read a lot of pop psychology books (Nudge, Thinking Fast and Slow, etc), and this was definitely one of the best ones I've picked up in the last few years. The topic of the book, secrets, is a lot deeper than I expected: there are all sorts of secrets that we keep, and the ability to keep secrets is related to fundamental aspects of theory of mind. I also enjoyed how the author introduces the topics using a combination of rigorous research, case studies, personal stories, and prompts to do my own reflection, which expertly walked a line between relatability and seriousness that a lot of other pop psych books don't pull off. Worth the read!

I so enjoyed this well-written and engaging book! Not only did it give me insight into the power and prevalence of secrets--how universal they are, what types we keep, and how they affect our daily lives--but it helped me see how the secrets we keep shape our daily lives and experience with others. You will surely learn a lot about secrets, but this book is about *more* than secrets; it's also about how the experiences we share with others, and keep to ourselves, fundamentally shape our sense of self, relationships, and well-being. It's a must read!

Liked the personal interwoven with the scientific. Great read when trying to understand people and relationships. And helps with acceptance.

I loved this book! There was a great balance between describing the scientific findings about secrecy, interesting stories, and helpful advice. It made me think about what I share with others and why in totally new ways. I also loved hearing about the study of secrecy in animals, and the development of secrecy in children. Highly recommend!

Can't be sure if this is a supplier issue or mishandling by courier but the book was not in great condition despite being a hardback it had taken 3 rounds with Mike Tyson and whilst still in one piece im not sure how long it will hang together.

The read its self is good if you're looking to read what appears to me to be the authors academic research work... in a book format. The authors background is second to none and I learnt some fun and interesting things ...the secret being we are all sadly broken from birth...but the secret life of secrets reminds we can repair ourselves somewhat and can definitely start to see why people keep secrets in the first place.

If you want to know how psychologists conduct experiments about secrets, this is the book for you. It wasn't gripping enough for me to finish, which makes me ask 'how do you write a boring book about secrets?!'
