The Dalai Lama's Cat Paperback – October 1, 2012
Purchase options and add-ons
Starving and pitiful, a mud-smeared kitten is rescued from the slums of New Delhi and transported to a life she could have never imagined. In a beautiful sanctuary overlooking the snow-capped Himalayas, she begins her new life as the Dalai Lama’s cat. Warmhearted, irreverent, and wise, this cat of many names opens a window to the inner sanctum of life in Dharamsala.
A tiny spy observing the constant flow of private meetings between His Holiness and everyone from Hollywood celebrities to philanthropists to self-help authors, the Dalai Lama’s cat provides us with insights on how to find happiness and meaning in a busy, materialistic world. Her story will put a smile on the face of anyone who has been blessed by the kneading paws and bountiful purring of a cat.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2018If you're looking for heavy spiritual content, don't look here. What Michie has given us is a light-hearted look at some essentials of Buddhist philosophy through the eyes of a cat who is adopted by the Dalai Lama. As is true of all cats HHC (His Holiness' Cat) has many names, Snow Lion, Mousie-Tung, Rinpoche, among others. Much of the story is about how HHC absorbs the lessons of Buddhism, and attempts to understand how they apply to her life.
She's also a tireless observer of humans and human lives, and her accounts of how they assimilate Buddhist teachings is really at the core of the book, and is I think, the reason why it does work well. It's not Buddhism for Dummies, it's Buddhism for people who are just ordinary people. There's no drama, just a pleasant, good-natured narrative about a cat who does all the things a cat does -- hunts, mates, begs people for food, enjoys being adored -- but who attempts to understand those things in terms of how her human sees the world, and who attempts to be mindful of who she wishes to be.
I got curious about whether the Dalai Lama really has a cat (HHC is a fiction.) and found that he does. Not a Himalayan like Snow Lion, but a sweet-faced, fluffy little tabby. It pleased me to think that His Holiness has the company of a cat.
I'm guessing his cat is unimpressed by the fuss people make over HH, which is as it should be.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2025I really enjoyed this book. As a cat lover, seeing everything from the Dalai Llama’s cat’s perspective was so enjoyable.
It was so inspiring and uplifting.
I plan on getting all the other books in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2017This book was engaging, insightful, and educational. The cat's point of view keeps the book light-hearted, cute, and entertaining. While you are picturing this beautiful, lovable female cat exploring the Dalai Lama's residency, the temple, and Dharamsala, you are learning valuable lessons as she observes, listens, and experiences. Before you know it, you have gained insight from a Monk's story, heard wisdom from the Dalai Lama, or stumbled upon a realization in your own life. As a (beginner) Buddhist, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone looking to learn a little more about Buddhism...in a fun way!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2024This is the first in a great series of six and I’m currently on the fabulous 4th. Each one is strong, fun, entertaining, and awakening, and could be read on their own, though I’m happy to be reading the series in order and already wish there were more.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2013Have you ever started reading a book that so captured your attention that you wanted to read it through to the end in one sitting, but also didn’t want it to end, so you limited yourself to reading one chapter a night? That’s how I felt about this book!
David Michie is a wonderful story-teller, while gently teaching his readers about Buddhism, so that it hardly feels like you’re “learning.” I found myself experiencing amazing personal insights after reading each evening’s chapter, & I also found myself making little changes in my thinking & actions between reading sessions. I marked MANY passages of the cat’s insights, as she learned from those around her. I so looked forward to the time I set aside for reading this book, as, somehow, as the time approached, I began to feel a wonderful calm come over me & it felt like I was truly entering the world of the Dalai Lama as I was reading.
If you’ve ever wondered about Buddhism, I think this would be a good book to read first, as the story shows how learning & practicing the teachings of Buddhism subtly begins to change you & your life. Instead of talking "about" Buddhism, it SHOWED what Buddhism looks like when a follower applies it in their daily life. It also shows a respectful, encouraging, compassionate way to teach others, as you read about the Dalai Lama’s interactions with the people around him. If only more people could help others grow in such a kind way!
While I’ve been intrigued by Buddhism for many years, & have been a long-time meditator, I always felt that the Buddhist beliefs were not for me. This book made me realize that my impressions of many of ts teachings were completely wrong! Because I want to learn more, & also because I love his writing style, I’m now moving on to Michie’s book “Buddhism For Busy People: Finding Happiness In An Uncertain World.”
I can’t recommend this book enough, &, while I wait for the sequel to come out, I can remain in the cat’s delightful world by re-reading it every month or so.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2012I'm on my second reading of this charming book. HHC (the cat) is a wonderful vehicle for the story. Who can resist this wee witness of daily life with the Dalai Lama? Full of wisdom and humor, I feel it is destined to be a classic and will be read for years to come. The wisdom teachings, as perceived by the beautiful kitty and told from her perspective, enrich the reader. Easily understood and meant for anyone of any religion, even, dare I say, the kitty in question. It can be read morsel by morsel (that is a page or paragraph) at bedtime. Truly a bedtime story for all ages. My first read through I couldn't stop. But this book is a gift that keeps on giving. A box of the best chocolates, to be savored, but unlike chocolates can be savored again and again. I'll buy 10 more for holiday gifts, wondering if that will be enough. Also Amazon makes this an affordable gift for anyone with a curiosity about deeper issues. The book provides shelter from the mad pace and often mean spiritedness of our time. A refreshing dip into the Eternal. Which is why I'd predict this easy to read book, with the author's timeless and loving style, will be a classic which will leave beautiful paw-prints into a future we can only imagine.
