Review

My friend Alli will give you a new perspective on this concept she calls breaking busy. She will make you laugh out loud, perhaps shed a tear, and challenge you to think long and hard about the impact busyness has on your everyday life - the choices you make, your interactions with the people closest to you, and your relationship with God. If you apply the principles Alli outlines in the book then you will not only feel less stressed, and more fulfilled, but you will also live a life of fruitfulness. Hard to Relate to as a SAHM

Hard to Relate to as a SAHM
In reading "Breaking Busy," I had a hard time relating to busy and burned-out Alli Worthington. Alli shares stories of flights, speaking engagements, blogging, founding Blissdom events, consulting, business coaching, writing a book, becoming executive director of Propel Women, raising five sons, and being a full-time working mom with a stay-at-home-husband. The decisions and stresses Alli faced seemed foreign to my life as a stay-at-home homeschooling mom of three. In fact, the very first story in the book (about falling asleep on an airport shuttle and misplacing her cellphone in her bra) and analogies to capacity overload so failed to capture my attention that I was ready to stop reading by page 20. I was also perplexed by Alli's decision to quit Blissdom on page 79, with no idea what her next job would be, when she was the primary breadwinner in her family. It wasn't until page 155 that Alli was offered the position at Propel Women, so for most of the book I was left wondering what she would do next. As a result, most of this 218 page book dragged for me.However, Alli does share many helpful lessons that she learned along the way that anyone can relate to. As she addresses her need for better time management, she talks about relationships, calling, choices, worry, expectations, decision-making, communicating, and finding your worth. "Breaking Busy" progresses almost chronologically through Alli's life, explaining how she dealt with each of these things along the way. She shares a lot of scripture, prayers, and advice from Christian friends and writers. I enjoyed her practical applications and was able to glean new insights from her use of things like a "Time Diary" (pg. 140) and a "Stop-Doing List" (pg. 146). She also introduced concepts like "Analysis Paralysis" (pg. 158), the "10-10-10 Analysis" (pg. 168), and "Communication Style" (pg. 176) that I thought were very interesting. The story I enjoyed the most was on page 133, when Alli described her desire to join a sewing class and make smocked rompers just to fit in with a new group of friends, even though she hates sewing. In conclusion, "Breaking Busy" has many good thoughts to offer. As the percentage of full-time working mothers continues to increase, I am sure that many other women will be able to relate to Alli Worthington's lifestyle in a way that I did not. Even if her "crazy busy" lifestyle is not universal, the lessons she has learned about time management can be successfully applied to a wide range of lifestyles.

"Busy" describes most women these days. We juggle family, work, community service, hobbies, relationships, faith. I live and die by my ever-growing to-do list. Alli Worthington's book, Breaking Busy, helped me to assess my current struggle with busyness and dream about a day I can break free from the busyness. Worthington doesn't just explain why we are busy or why we should get un-busy. She helps the reader systematically review her commitments, her passion, and her calling. She provides practical advice for letting go of the good and replacing it with the best.

My favorite chapter, hands-down, is titled "Decision." She provides a framework for making decisions that transcend the topic of busyness. I plan to refer back to that chapter time and again as I face difficult decisions.

My copy of Breaking Busy is marked with highlighter and notes in the margin. Multiple pages are dog-eared as I have gone back to them to boost my resolve to live a peaceful and purposeful life. I have already loaned my copy to a friend and ordered a few more copies to share. I highly recommend this one to women in all ages and stages!

“Crazy busy is a life without peace. It’s marked by decisions made for the approval of the world, not the approval of God. It’s filled with what we think we “should” do, what we think will make others happy, and what we think being a good person looks like. All this busyness, in the end, keeps us just out of reach of the life we were created to live.”

“Breaking busy is about more than identifying the things in our life that suck the life out of us. We must also identify what gives us life, what recharges us and restores our capacity.”

“If we are going to start breaking busy, we start with focusing in on the relationships that fill our souls.”

“Our lives have gotten so cluttered up with things we think we “should” do, we can’t figure out what we were meant to do. Let your life be about what you are meant to do, not full of what you think you should do. This starts with your daily decisions about how you spend your time.”

These are three of the many many quotes I’ve underlined in Alli Worthington’s Breaking Busy. This is a book that I have found college students, mom’s of littles, mom’s with teens and empty nesters all gravitate to. It should come as no surprise that any stage of life has seasons of feeling overwhelmed and above capacity within it.

Breaking Busy addresses extensively the different areas of our lives we tend to fill up with busyness. Relationships, Traditions, Calling, Thoughts and many other subjects are written about in matter of fact statements that had me nodding my head, tearing up with gratitude and feeling energized to edit, adjust and say no!

Alli uses her own life journey to show ways that God has directed her journey in pursuing her life calling. She writes about the beginning and end of BlissDom. Within the journey Alli reveals that obedience doesn’t always look like we think it should. “Here’s the thing about Breaking Busy, sometimes it calls for tough choices, for making drastic choices even in the place where you’ve been highly successful.” Reading these words lifted a huge weight off my chest that I didn’t realize I was still carrying. The weight from guilt of walking away from a season of life that was filled with success. Learning to balance obedience and calling is challenging and as I read Breaking Busy is affirmed many areas in both my life and Ordell’s where things are on track.

I deeply appreciated the balance of tender and honesty that Alli writes with, her heart to help women love their lives more fully shines through. I realized while reading this book that checked off “to do” lists and boundary establishing may patch up our stress for awhile, but piling bandaid upon bandaid won’t stop the wounds from coming. We must figure out how to find balance and correctly prioritize by breaking busy in order to live the lives God calls us to.

If you're an overwhelmed mom with a jam-packed calendar, you might want to give it a read. LOTS of people say YES to things they shouldn't out of guilt or obligation. I hear it from people I talk to every single day. If that's you, then you definitely should read this book. Alli has several very practical suggestions for how to do that in a clear and kind way. :) Me? I don't fall into that category. I'm ok with saying no to things that don't match up with my schedule, talents and interests. However...I do have a way-too-full calendar of things I say YES to because they sound like good things, fun things, and important things. And for that reason, this book was a helpful opportunity to evaluate and identify where I should be using my efforts and talents NOW, not just where my talents and interests are. My biggest takeaway from the book has been that you have to identify what your *current* calling is--and that it can change, so you have to constantly be aware and reevaluating. That means instead of just adding more responsibilities, you may need to stop doing some good things to make room for new and better things.

Breaking Busy How to find peace and purpose in a world of crazy, is a book that would help you pinpoint those things in our life that are making us busy for no reason. This book also provides very specific, real life scenarios of things we sometimes commit to, trying to please others but aren't pleasing God. One of the quotes I enjoyed the most about this book is the following" Just say no to unneccesary crazy" That quote speaks so much to me every time I read it. I highly recommend this book, if you are looking for get rid of some of the busy clutter in your life, also grab an extra copy for a friend also. We all know that person that when you ask how they are doing, the response is "I'm good, crazy busy". Breaking Busy by Alli Worthington is your book to break that cycle of busyness and get in the circle of our purpose, our calling according to God's purpose.

The tagline of Breaking Busy is "How to Find Peace & Purpose in a World of Crazy" and that is exactly what Ali does. If you're anything like me, you've fallen into the trap of glorifying busy. You might also be like me in that you've done it so well for so long that you didn't realize you were doing it until recently. If this is you, Breaking Busy is exactly what you need to read! What I love about Ali is that she's entertaining but also practical, providing real life examples and plenty of prompts to get you going. Each chapter ends with an action section, and the questions are tough but important steps on the way to breakthrough, on the way to breaking busy.

I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
