ISABEL MILLER was the pen name of Alma Routsong, who was born in Traverse City, Michigan in 1924. Her first two novels in the 1950s were published under her real name; when she self-published her classic lesbian novel A Place for Us in 1969, she used “Isabel Miller,” a combination of an anagram of "Lesbia" and her mother's maiden name. A Place for Us was re-published by McGraw-Hill in 1971, under the new title Patience & Sarah. Arsenal Pulp Press published a new edition of Patience & Sarah in 2005, featuring an introduction by Emma Donaghue. Alma Routsong died in 1996.

How do you take a book like this one and say what you like the most, except everything. It was way too short, but the author died a long time ago so that can't be remedied. I wish I could write like that and I would be able to write books like I would like to read. Sarah was naïve, but had an adventure that put her at an advantage for her relationship with Patience. Patience was older, more educated, and sensible, but she didn't know everything. It's a wonderful historical romance and does not seem dated in the least. For an older book, I was so delighted that nobody had to commit suicide or come to a tragic end. It seems like those used to be the only kind of lesbian stories you could read, but this was wonderful.

It's a classic. This book is a heartfelt and adorable story about two young women who are trying to make it as a couple in a time when women were not thought to be their own people. In a world where women belong to their fathers, brothers, or husbands, the radical notion that two women can fall in love and make it work was unheard of. I recommend this story to anyone who wants to read a sweet and endearing love story.

I loved this book when I first ran across it back in the early early 70's, and recently acquired the audio book rights. I'm hoping to do it justice, because it's a classic - the first "gay women's" fiction book where no one hates themselves for being gay, no one commits suicide... in fact, the women go off to start their lives as a couple quite happily. A sweet, sweet story, sweetly told.

Anytime I need to remember that life is good and full of sweetness, I read this book. Isabel Miller develops characters so well. I'm right there in the early 1800's with them! When my soul is trying to rush to the next chapter in my life, impatient for the good, I remember the next to last line in this book; " You can't tell a gift how to come ". Indeed.

Once again, Janis Ian hits just the right notes! Her performance as Sarah is moving as she takes us through the tale of first love, true love, real love between young women who know of societal barriers but know more of their feelings one toward the other. Janis, along with Jean Smart, bring the title characters to life and remind all of us who love and have loved of the trials through which we will go to be with the one with whom we find home. As Janis has written and sung, "Life is never wrong..."

A read outside of my norm, but enjoyed it; it was well written and engaging and was easy to pick up and read after intervals.

4.0 out of 5 stars lesbian classic

Patience and Sarah was written many a year ago and was set in a times even further back - the 19th century to be exact! It is based on the real relationship between artist Mary Ann Wilson and her partner.
It's incredibly sweet if not overly soppy in some places but always brought a smile to my face. The two characters are unique and yet lovable in their determination and passion for each other.
The book is rather short and easy to read. I managed to finish it in a single sitting. Ergo I wouldnt fork out loads of money on it but I'd say it's worth a read. Something slightl different (more old fashion?) to the newer bog standard lesbian novels out there.
