No One Gets Out Alive: A Novel Hardcover – April 28, 2015

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 1,264 ratings

When Stephanie moves to the notoriously cheap Perry Bar neighborhood of Birmingham, she's just happy to find an affordable room for rent that's large enough not to deserve her previous room's nickname, "the cell." The eccentric ― albeit slightly overly-friendly ― landlord seems nice and welcoming enough, the ceilings are high, and all of the other tenants are also girls. Things aren't great, but they're stable. Or at least that's what she tells herself when she impulsively hands over enough money to cover the first month's rent and decides to give it a go.

But soon after she becomes uneasy about her rash decision. She hears things in the night. Feels them. Things...or people...who aren't there in the light. Who couldn't be there, because after-all, her door is locked every night, and the key is still in place in the morning. Concern soon turns to terror when the voices she hears and presence she feels each night become hostile. It's clear that something very bad has happened in this house. And something even worse is happening now. Stephanie has to find a way out, before whatever's going on in the house finds her first.

Adam Nevill's No One Gets Out Alive will chill you straight through to the core ― a cold, merciless, fear-inducing nightmare to the last page. A word of caution, don't read this one in the dark.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Adam Nevill is a spine-chiller in the classic tradition, a writer who draws you in from the world of the familiar, eases you into the world of terror, and then locks the door behind you. The House of Small Shadows grows darker and takes on more menacing life with each step forward.” ―Michael Koryta, New York Times Bestselling author of The Prophet on The House of Small Shadows

“Chilling...and deeply creepy. It has the feel of a cult classic.” ―Scott Smith, NYT bestselling author on The House of Small Shadows

“A fascinating blend of modern storytelling...and old school terror. Very scary, highly recommended.” ―Jonathan Maberry, NYT bestselling author on The House of Small Shadodws

“Shirley Jackson, Carlos Ruiz Zafón, and Peter Straub would approve--this sets the bar for the best horror novel of the decade.” ―Booklist, Starred Review on The House of Small Shadows

“Eemotionally intense, intellectually challenging...addictively readable.” ―PW Starred Review on The House of Small Shadows

“Nevill's talent for horror resonates ominously in every scene.” ―Kirkus Reviews on The House of Small Shadows

OH my God who is Adam Nevill and what has he done with horror fiction? After reading his entire canon, I must say I'm hooked. Nevill has single handedly restored my interest and faith in the modern horror story. Each of his books is slightly different, the scares come from different angles. This one was higher on the violence and gore factor and as a woman, there were definitely parts that had me uncomfortably squirming in my seat. But the author is a genius, a master at a good fright. When Stephanie gets locked into the dark room and you just know Black Mag is in there....oh my God, I had to put the book down because I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep if I met her. Awful, twisted, and desperate characters are Nevill's forte and he does it oh so well. To paraphrase another great horror writer , " Adam Nevill, I am your number one fan." Cheers and keep the books coming!

At first was kept spellbound by Steph's stay in the house of horrors. The last few chapters were repetitions and I lost interest.

As a fan of adam neville,I was excited to read his newest.
No One Gets Out Alive is as terrifying as what I consider his best work Last Days.Neville has an ability to capture horror in the detritus, and the mundane that is far scarier than the more common overrblown and dramatic.
Stephanie is a kind of a marginalized young woman with no social network who gets trapped in what seems to be just a dreary lodging house for the poorest, but there are beings in this disgustingly dirty depraved old Victorian who Stephanie cannot ignore. The landlords devolve from creepy to psychopathic .Stephanie s struggle is to escape not just everyday horror but horror founded on and stoked by the most revolting of idols.
There was a fullness of Storytelling that I enjoyed a lot in this book. I was satisfied with the conclusion. Neville stories are so powerfully claustrophobic and engrossing ,that they need to have completion and resolution and this one did. Good book but don't be surprised if it stays with you for a while.

It has been a while since I read anything scary, so I decided to give this one a go. Unfortunately, while this wasn't exactly a bad book, for being horror it was pretty light in the scares department. Following a very down-on-her-luck girl who rents a room from a rather shady landlord in what turns out to be a haunted boarding house, it would seem like a good set-up for creepy goings-on, and there are all manner of upsetting things that happen. The problem lies in the way they are presented. Most of the situations that have the strongest potential at building suspense are set-up, and then suddenly told after the fact. In doing so, it removes pretty much all fear from the equation, as we already know more-or-less what transpired before reading about it in grisly detail. Nevermind that the protagonist's actions require some extreme suspension of disbelief, at least try to scare me from time to time. Things do improve in the markedly different (and better) second half, but by then it's a case of too little too late. A decent enough read that I might check out some more of this author's books, but I can't say I recommend this one.

I enjoyed this book thoroughly. Definitely going to look for more by this author. Watched the movie after and the only thing in common with the book is that it's a haunted house with female ghosts very loosely based on a premise. Don't want to ruin the book by saying more.

The pace of this book kept me intrigued from the first chapter! The author took his time and truly made "Stephanie" someone I felt empathy for and could relate to. Her despair as a struggling young woman who wanted to believe in better was genuine and I wanted to know her story and to experience what she does! The house of horrors was beautifully crafted and each new "inhabitant" was introduced with not only a gritty description but also provided a memorable emotional-imprint of sorts and sometimes it seemed, even a palatable scent! A genuine ghost/ horror tale that left me turning pages into the night but also afraid for what might be revealed. The end was solid and satisfying and one of the best in this genre I've read in a while.I intend to enjoy more of Mr. Nevill's work!

My favorite of Adam Nevill's books so far! He's one of the best British horror novelists. I'll admit, the violence of the story did get really intense. At one point, it got so excruciating that I wasn't sure if I could continue withe reading it. But right at that point, Nevill pulls the reader from the edge and switches gears. It's an exhilarating ride! It's the kind of book that lingers with you even after you're done reading it. His descriptions of the house is so wonderful that not only do you feel like you are there, but the house becomes a character all in itself. I'm looking forward to his next novel!

Pensé que sería una buena historia y que me atraparía. Empieza super bien pero por ahí de la página 300 empieza a sentirse todo muy repetitivo. Dejé de leerlo en la página 400. Ya no disfrutaba seguir.

3.0 out of 5 stars Descriptive and a bit dragging
Reviewed in India on April 16, 2024
The story is more or less divided into two parts with the former being more enjoyable than the latter. I'm not at all a horror reader but it was surprisingly good expecially for someone who doesn't care much about the supernatural aspects of fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very atmospheric and good ending
Reviewed in Germany on November 18, 2018
At first I thought this is a typical Nevill, as atmospheric as can be and a "well" ending, but it is great. It is understandable how Stephanie got into the situation and reacted. The atmosphere was awesome, I still get goosebumps, even if I can't say it's about the voices or the described cold. The ending is very well written, one that I'm very satisfied with.
As a non- native speaker the language is understandable, even if a character's hard to read at first. I write this, because I've got a little problems while reading "House of small shadows".
