The first-ever picture book biography about Dr. Katalin Karikó, winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Growing up in a small Hungarian town, Kati Karikó was curious about everything. As an adult, she channeled her curiosity into her work as a scientist. An mRNA vaccine had never been made before, and she faced frequent criticism and was told by other scientists she would never succeed. After many years of hard work and dedication, she figured out how to use mRNA to make a vaccine―and when a deadly virus called COVID-19 started infecting millions of people, Kati’s invention turned out to be exactly what the world needed.

Never Give Up is the inspiring true story of a determined scientist who proved that a little bit of curiosity and a lot of hard work can save lives.

I read this book to my ten year old daughter who is learning about biology and cells in science class. She is going to suggest her teacher share it with her class.

This is a well written and easily understood explanation of how pioneering Hungarian scientist Kati Kariko's 40 years of investigation and work on mRNA led to the development of the life saving Covid 19 vaccine.

I didn't know the history or completely understand the science behind the vaccine, so it was interesting to me as an adult, as well.

Kati Kariko's biography is fascinating and inspiring. She overcame a lot of hardship and didn't give up on her study of mRNA, even when everyone told her she could never make a working vaccine with mRNA. She was even fired from Temple University and demoted from a faculty position at University of Pennsylvania, yet she persisted.

The book contains helpful illustrations, and supplemental material such as quotes from Kati, a timeline of Kati's life and work, steps to making a vaccine, stages vaccines must go through in the United States before being given to the public, a note from the author, a glossary, source notes, and suggested resources for further study.

There is a lot of knowledge and inspiration packed into this 40 page book. Highly recommended for fourth through sixth grade students. (Thank you to the author and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book. My opinions are my own.)

A great book to help children understand the development of the COVID-19 vaccine and the important research process that goes into making vaccines. Kati's story is one that was overlooked during the turbulent times as politics dominated new stories, even those concerning the vaccine. This book does such a great job explaining Kati's background and her important work that led to the development of a whole new kind of vaccine.

Hungarian-born Dr. Kati Kariko demonstrated a “never give up” attitude from childhood and even more so as she researched the uses of mRNA in fighting disease with living/working in the United States. Debbie Dadey (Bailey School Kids and more) gives elementary readers a look at the life Dr. Kariko and her important contribution to the science of creating vaccines with pencil and computed-generated illustrations by Juliana Oakley. The text is sparse but covers the topic well enough that readers will realize the hard work and dedication that it took to create the COVID and a flu vaccine. The detailed illustrations will provide plenty of opportunity for conversation between readers and caregivers. Backmatter includes a wonderful pictorial timeline, a glossary, and information on the steps to making and giving vaccines to people, as well as source notes for the quotes attributed to Kariko and others throughout the book. A list of other books for young readers on the subjects of vaccines and DNA/RNA is also included. Solid choice for school libraries with patrons who are looking for books on interesting people and medical research and its important strides.

This is a great book about following your dreams! It is also timely, coming after the Covid 19 pandemic. I think this would be a great read aloud for elementary and middle school students. Thank you to the author and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book. My opinions are my own.
