James Russell is an art historian and curator specialising in Modern and Contemporary art and design. His recent exhibitions include 'Seafaring' (Hastings Contemporary, 2022), 'Extraordinary Everyday: The Art & Design of Eric Ravilious' (Arc Winchester, 2022) 'Reflection: British Art in an Age of Change' (Ferens Art Gallery, 2019-20), 'Edward Bawden' at Dulwich Picture Gallery and 'In Relation: 9 Couples who Transformed Modern British Art' at RWA Bristol (both 2018), 'Ravilious' (Dulwich 2015) and 'Peggy Angus: Designer, Teacher, Painter' (Towner, 2014, co-curator with Sara Cooper).

His four-volume series 'Ravilious in Pictures' (Mainstone Press) celebrates the life and work of English designer, printmaker and watercolourist Eric Ravilious (1903-42), exploring the stories and characters concealed behind his mesmerizing paintings. 'The Lost Watercolours of Edward Bawden' (Mainstone Press) was a 2016 Sunday Times Book of the Year.

He has also written books on Paul Nash, Peggy Angus, Edward Seago and David Remfry, always endeavouring to write in plain English and to explore the artist's life as much as their work.

James has travelled far and wide both to research the books and to give talks on the subject, and has enjoyed every minute; you can find descriptions of his travels, photos and other fascinating stuff on his blog, jamesrussellontheweb.blogspot.com.
