A Beautiful and Captivating Story!
Thank you @suzyspprovedbooktours and @kerrywrites for my gifted copy. My thoughts are my own. This beautiful story captured my attention from the beginning. The author’s vivid descriptions took me to the 1930s, during a time when much of the world was struggling with loss of income, unemployment, and even malnutrition. This well-researched story especially emphasized hardships on women, children, and African Americans. I noticed two themes that ran throughout:“That’s the thing about the Great Depression. Living with nothing forced us all to find out who we were on the raw, fleshy inside.”And:“The less people have, the more they want to give.”Above all, this is a coming of age story! The main character, 17 year-old Magnolia, struggles with many issues but she ultimately gains valuable life knowledge and in the end she makes a difficult decision. This one brought tears!Read this if you enjoy:*colorful characters*vivid descriptions that take you to another time*coming of age tales, and*life lessons(The quotes mentioned above are from the book.)

Kerry Chaput is quickly earning acclaim, and rightfully so, as a writer who brings young female protagonists to center stage, fraught with flaws and filled with hope. Magnolia Parker is her newest heroine in Chasing Eleanor. Set during the Great Depression, a chance fictionalized encounter with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, sets Magnolia on a quest to reclaim her family. From Bend, Oregon to Warm Springs, Georgia to the forgotten, wind-blown farmlands of the Midwest, Magnolia’s journey comes alive in her zig-zag trek as she hops trains, finding a new definition of family along the way. Chaput’s ability to craft scarred characters who never give up their fight shines on every page. Using a real event of Eleanor Roosevelt’s stop in Bend to speak and inspire the down-trodden of the Depression anchors the book in the time-period when darkness and despair gripped the country. Action and adventure fill each chapter. I enjoyed meeting a young heroine at the center of that action, taking control of her life and step-by-step letting go of the past to embrace her future.

This was a wonderful historical fiction story. Based during the Great Depression, you are taken on a journey through heartbreaking situations. The characters are well developed and I grew to love Magnolia (Maggie). She is such an amazing young lady who is determined to keep her family together despite having no mother, no father, and no job. But she does not give up. Her love for her brothers is inspirational. When she is presented with the rare opportunity to meet Eleanor Roosevelt, she is in awe. And Eleanor’s quotes help her to keep the faith and trudge along. I loved the way Eleanor Roosevelt was represented and her efforts to help women and their role in society. Then when Maggie meets Hop and Red, life takes a turn. They band together and the relationship develops. A coming-of-age story, this one will have you cringing at what the various characters endure, encouraging them as they struggle to live a simple life, cheering them on as they travel physically and emotionally through the difficult days of the depression. A great adventure sprinkled the pages. While not a light read, you will have your heart lifted when you get to the end and see Maggie’s life unfold in an amazing way.

This book packs a punch. Heart-rending historical fiction, set in the time of the Great Depression. The author did a great job of depicting what life was like during this troubled time in our country.
Y.A. is the intended audience, but there are some very adult themes that might need adult guidance.

This YA historical novel centers on a teen girl who is desperately trying to keep her family together in the depths of the Depression. She believes that First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt is the key to their survival, so she goes on a quixotic journey, crisscrossing the US, in her effort to meet Mrs. Roosevelt. The historical details are well-researched and the gritty determination of the characters reminded me of Kristen Hannah’s The Four Winds.

The Great Depression is often remembered in images of men on sidewalks, and families in dusty cars. But what about the children who had to fend for themselves? What about the teenagers who were thrust into adulthood way before they were ready? The trains didn't carry just men–hobos–young adults fought their way to some kind of home too.

Teen-aged Magnolia has one goal: find her younger brothers who've been sent to an orphan asylum while she was working to help them live. She never gives up, strengthened by the young friends she finds on the way, and a memory of the great lady who is working for all of America. Eleanor Roosevelt would be proud. And readers will be thrilled, and moved, by Magnolia's voyage.

I’ve almost read this book a few times, waiting for when I was in just the right mood. It didn’t disappoint. From the first page it grabbed my heart and didn’t let go. My grandfather rode the rails during the Depression with his younger brothers and this story felt like it held pieces of stories adjacent to his.
This is a moving testament to women, to forgiveness, and to the healing power of love.
