In this young adult novel by award-winning author Anna-Marie McLemore, two non-binary teens are pulled into a magical world under a lake - but can they keep their worlds above water intact?
Everyone who lives near the lake knows the stories about the world underneath it, an ethereal landscape rumored to be half-air, half-water. But Bastián Silvano and Lore Garcia are the only ones who’ve been there. Bastián grew up both above the lake and in the otherworldly space beneath it. Lore’s only seen the world under the lake once, but that one encounter changed their life and their fate.
Then the lines between air and water begin to blur. The world under the lake drifts above the surface. If Bastián and Lore don’t want it bringing their secrets to the surface with it, they have to stop it, and to do that, they have to work together. There’s just one problem: Bastián and Lore haven’t spoken in seven years, and working together means trusting each other with the very things they’re trying to hide.

Bastián and Lore are both Latine, trans, non-binary, queer, and neurodivergent, weary from living at the intersection of these marginalized identities. They keep many of their struggles private and are afraid to open up and show each other all the secret parts of themselves.
This book is filled with magical realism and wonder, but the story is not really about the magic of the lake, it focuses on the emotional states and mental health of the two main characters and how they learn to trust each other as they become friends. Much of the story revolves around Bastián's struggles with ADHD, and I’ve found it to be the most realistic representation of ADHD that I’ve ever read in a book. I have ADHD myself, and I related so much to what Bastián was going through. If you have ADHD and want to see yourself represented, or if you have a loved one with ADHD and want to better understand them, you must read this book. Lore’s dyslexia is also a major part of the story, and the way the two teens relate to each other is so beautiful. They both have supportive and loving parents, siblings, and friends and are both getting professional help which is honestly kind of a relief since they already have so much they are dealing with on a daily basis. I thought this book was emotional, beautiful, and thoughtful. I recently heard someone say representation is a mirror or a window. You either see yourself or you get a window into someone else’s life. I feel like I got both of those experiences reading this book. I highly recommend this if you like character-driven coming of age books about friendship, with a little bit of queer romance too.
Rep: Bastián: Mexican-American, queer, trans, non-binary, ADHD.
Lore: Mexican-American, queer, trans, non-binary, dyslexic.
Bastián has lesbian moms and there are various queer side characters
CW: Bullying, transphobia/misgendering (mostly in flashbacks of bullying incidents), ableism, dysphoria, systemic racism
This really hit home for me. This story focuses on how two neuroatypical, non-binary teens of color go through life. What they do, how they are treated, how the people around them have supported them, how some of their peers haven't accepted them. Along with that, they learn how they are OKAY and how they accept themselves in every way and let other people in. As someone who came out as non-binary later in life, this would have been a great read to have for my angsty and confused teenage self. The writing is great, and the characters are top-notch. And the representation is there in spades! The story itself is pretty mellow and focuses mainly on Bastian and Lore, individually and together. It's a pretty easy read and something that I can definitely appreciate even as an adult. I had fun, and I definitely recommend it.
I really connected with Bastian one of the two main characters. They have ADHD and while my illness isn’t the same as Bastian’s I know what it is to have a thought take over your brain and not let go of you. How they explained their symptoms using weather reminds me of how I use similar imagery to explain mine. I really love both Lore and Bastian but Bastian is my favorite. It is so great to come across characters that you see yourself in. This was a fabulous story from start to finish. I am so excited that my favorite book box Rainbow Crate is doing an item for it in October 2022.
