* Part of the popular Hiking Geology series
* Appendices cover additional geologic information for the non-geologist
* Everything needed to plan the trip, including information about permits, lodging and camping, mule rides, and recommended day trips

Etched on the Grand Canyon's steep walls are stories of how this majestic landscape came to be: volcanic islands, stark deserts, and tranquil seas come and gone, and histories of plants and animals that have made this place their home. You'll see this story up close on the trail with the help of
Hiking the Grand Canyon's Geology. In eighteen excursions, there's something for everyone-from the most popular rim-to-river trails (Havasu Canyon Trail) to gentle, half-day rim walks (Red Butte Trail) to rugged and remote multi-day backpack trips (Lava Falls Route).

Geologists Lon Abbott and Teri Cook both teach at Prescott College in Prescott, Arizona, where they lead hiking trips to study geology in the field.

Editorial Reviews

Review

It serves as a definitive guide for people who want to learn the language and dialogue of geology…[The books in the Hiking Geology series] do a good job of breaking down the process and nature of geology, and have enough photographs and illustrations to educate the greenest of geology neophytes., Arizona Daily Sun

An excellent resource for curious hikers as they descend into the canyon's depths…Anyone who loves the Grand Canyon will like this book.,
Salt Lake City (UT) Desert News

Abbott and Cook give us a comprehensive understanding of the geology [of Grand Canyon National Park].,
Southwest BookViews

The fun part comes when the authors turn pretty scenery into tales of ancient world cataclysm, inland tropical seas and middle-earth rumblings.,
Los Angeles Times

About the Author

TERRI COOK earned a master's degree in geology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she studied rocks from deep-sea hot springs, a well as the lush communities of tube worms and other fauna found at these oases. Terri's undergraduate degree in archaeology is from Tufts University, and her interest in geology, archaeology, and experiencing new cultures have led her across five continents. Having grown up in Connecticut, Terri saw the grand Canyon for the first time in 1993, and she goes back to experience its wonders again and again. Terri is an adjunct faculty member at Prescott College and she includes extensive field-based work in the geology courses she teaches.

Veteran rock climber
LON ABBOTT is a geology professor at Prescott College. His studies in geology have taken him from the remote mountain peaks of Papua New Guinea to the bottom of a 15,000-foot oceanic trench near Costa Rica. Lon's twin passions for teaching and outdoor activities led to this current faculty position as a member of the Environmental Studies program. He teaches a full range of geology courses, most of which include hiking or backpacking trips to examine the geologic wonders of the Southwest and the Rockies. Lon's research has been published in a variety of scientific journals, including Nature, Tectonics, and Journal of Sedimentary Research, and he has written an article about the geology of rock climbing holds for Rock & Ice.

I studied this book for 6 months before we hiked to the bottom and back up (of course)the Grand Canyon. Were it not for the information I absorbed from reading, and yes, studying this book we certainly would not have appreciated the grandeur of what we were witnessing. I had not studied Earth Science for 40 years and I found this book spoke simply and intelligently and was well organized. I cannot use enough superlatives to describe how much valuable knowledge was learned in such a short amount of time. Also, my hiking companions truly enjoyed my "sharing" all the knowledge with them as we hiked down and explored for 3 days. Thank you, thank you to the authors!!

I purchased this book as a reference while working on my DVD Hiking Guide to the Grand Canyon (Jon's DVD Hiking Guides - Grand Canyon National Park) and I found it to be invaluable.

If you want to truly experience the place that you are hiking in then you need to be able to do at least some interpretation of the natural world around you. In the Grand Canyon, geology is paramount.

This book is excellent in that it has something for everyone. I believe that Geology Majors would not feel that the subject has been "dumbed down", but it also enlightens those (like myself) who have little knowledge of the subject.

Knowing about Grand Canyon geology makes the topography come to life. It sparks the imagination as you imagine what the area looked like while each rock layer was being deposited.

For those planning a trip to the Grand Canyon I think of this book as an addition to another Grand Canyon hiking book or DVD. Its focus is geology, and leaves out a lot of information that most books or DVDs that are focused solely on hiking contain.

I bought this book as research material for my upcoming trip to the Grand Canyon as a volunteer for the park service. I am very familiar with the history of the American southwest but not the geology or ecology, particularly of the Canyon area. As the other reviewers have already noted this book is an invaluable reference for the Canyon geology and is presented in a lively and comprehensive manner for the lay reader. The appendices (A-C) provide a short background course on geology before reading the chapters. I am only about a quarter of the way through the book and I am delighted with the amazing story the authors tell of the rock formations in the Canyon.

You have to be into Geology to understand this fine guidebook. Study it first before you go. And you have to be a Grand Canyon Hiking freak to get to most of these areas. But we found it useful for some of the more popular trails that lead you down from the Village on the South Rim too. We found a lot of fossils that would have been overlooked while hiking down to Dripping Springs. Great Hike. Hope to go back again and again, but timing your hike in the Grand Canyon is chancy. When it is moderate in temperature down below it can be snowing on the rim. When it was sunny and warm on the rim, we almost perished down below at Dripping Springs. The fossils we found were well-described in this guide, and only a mile or so from the trailhead. If you are going to take a river trip, this guide would probably be in the tin box on the boat. Maybe not. Get it just in case. I got a very cheap library edition from Amazon used books and hope to do more with it in the future.
